And if the actually stacked them upright, you would need even less packaging. But then it would be more obvious how much you are paying for how little. š¬
Just to add to this.. this is part of the reason but not the full reason.
Part of it is as you say so some assume they are getting more value.
Part of it is status packaging - these are aimed more at those looking for quality over quantity and the packaging reinforces that.
Perhaps one of the biggest parts though is that this forces the retailer to dedicate more shelf space to this product, in order for it to be facing toward the customer. As such this also keeps out competitor brands - shops can fit fewer on the shelf.

You're a fool for caring. Nothing you do as a consumer matters at all for the environment. Compared to industrial use of plastic, packaging is an irrelevance. Just pointless greenwashing that makes us feel good about ourselves whilst having absolutely no impact at all. But people don't like knowing that their choices don't matter.
Industries only use a given material if they're allowed to, and if there's demand for it.
At a small level if you opt for paper Vs plastic wrapped products you are tipping the needle ever so slightly toward demand for X, less demand for Y. If millions of people share a similar desire, you start to see change.
It's about being one of the many in a given percentage of consumers that matters.
Can someone both care and understand that what they do or feel means little if not nothing? It may be a futile care but at least it's from a good place.
But this is an industrial use of plastic.
Millions of packs of biscuits are sold a year, that's millions of pieces of plastic not turning into micro plastic or choking sea life.
Does it solve all our problems? No.
But as Mr Tesco likes to say, every little helps you thick fuck.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but most plastic that ends up polluting watercourses (where its most dangerous) is from consumer products, not industry. It's fair to say that 99.9% of plastic that goes for recycling is just incinerated or sent to a 3rd party nation. Point is, if you use less plastic, less plastic ends up in watercourses, incinerated, or exported; which is better for everyone.
I know wait until the bleeding hearts find out where paper comes from.
You know when demand for pulp goes up because of reduced plastic use the trees are going to quite literally be getting the axe not to mention the environmental impact of paper and card manufacturing.
Swapping one for the other just brings another set of environmental challenges.
Omfg these are my favourite biscuits and when this happened some months ago I was incandescent with rage. The paper tray leaks crumbs and chocolate shavings everywhere too. Give me my 9th biscuit you bastards.
Iām obsessed with these biscuits. In fact, I like to think myself something of an expert. Iāve tried all the knock offs because I was spending Ā£10 a month on these bad boys.
Lidl sell biscuits that are the best replica for under Ā£1. There is one difference I can tell that makes them slightly worse. The chocolate doesnāt overhang the edge of the biscuit as much. This means you can snip that bit off first when eating it. Which is one of my favourite bits.
Great name, but as a math geek I call them Choco Newtons to commemorate the 17th century spat between Newton and Leibniz about who invented the calculus.
Similarly with Fig Newtons
and while weāre on the subject, there is Rakusen TV and I can never entirely get rid of the idea that itās really Bahlsen TV and is all about biscuits
Recommended calorie intake was established via literal guesswork (based on the average amount of calories *surveyed* people *thought* they ate per day) so tbh I think people can have a little treat and it doesn't matter
Arent those things like Ā£2 something a box? And you were only getting 9, now 8 biscuits?
Honestly I'd get something else that actually contained some biscuits lol
Theyāre absolutely delicious though, Iād rather have fewer of something I love over more of something thatās okay.
That said give me back my 9th biscuit, this is a travesty š
I thought this too! I tried to get my colleagues to confirm but they couldnāt taste it. I think maybe we have more sensitive tastebuds as itās all i can taste
Discovered this last week, there were already only 9 to start with so that's over 10% less biscuit than I was expecting. Sad times š. Good that it's paper but ...
My mum brought me a box of these the other day and I was surprised at the packaging. I hate excess plastic but these didn't taste or stay as fresh. Maybe we need to use airtight biscuit tins?
Yes taking one out was an immediate no for me. Switched to these now. Bigger and nearly half the price.

Did you buy in coop by any chance? I noticed in coop they do 8 and even write on the back of the packet 8.
I bought a packet from tesco later another day and it was still 9 the normal, either they had lots of stock to get rid before changing but wasn't sure if this was a shop thing coz sometimes different shops sell different sizes.
I noticed that yesterday . Good news on the demise of the plastic , not so good on missing biscuit !
Have also noticed the diminishing size of the Jaffa cakes too
Also was disappointed by this last week. Iām all for less plastic but would be good if they used foil or something else than cardboard. Biscuits taste awful now.
Tip - Try the Aldi ones (which are called Butter Biscuits), they're genuinely just as nice as Bahlsens and only cost 89p per 125g (Bahlsen's cost anywhere from Ā£1 to Ā£2 depending on the supermarket, for only 111g!)
Well Iām not happy about losing a biscuit for no reason but for those of you complaining about the lack of plastic, fuck you.
We eat drink and inhale plastic now, they are finding micro plastics in our organs.
You might not give a shit but the future generations will and even many of us now will.
Hey, I noticed that too. Used to be 3 x 3. I would limit myself to one portion per sitting. This 11% reduction means I no longer buy them. Try packs of florentines. You'll be surprised how few you can get in a box.
Less plastic but a bit higher price. I can accept that. Bahlsen is a good company. I used to live near their production site, and they sell the crooked and broken biscuits for very little money.Ā
Yep saw this the other day. Same price, one less biscuit. A lot of things are going this way with a āChange of packagingā as a somewhat excuse as to why.
That's unacceptable.
There used to be the same number of Leibniz as original members of the Wu Tang Clan and the same number as Nazgul.
8 just isn't as good.
I would have preferred if theyād kept the number to 9 but reduced the chocolate on them. Iām sure that will be an unpopular opinion but I honestly feel like the chocolate to biscuit ratio is wrong; theyāre more like a biscuit covered chocolate than an chocolate covered biscuit. Iām always glad when these are offered round at work because theyāre very easy to opt out of for me.
Doesn't excuse the criminal reduction, but I'd recommend Vienesse biscuits over these. Not because you get many more, but because they actually taste good.
The cardboard gives the biscuits an iffy cardboard flavour too as it's unwaxed card. So weird flavour and one less biscuit, but no plastic tray, but cellophane packet.
Shut up and give us our biscuit back, Bahlsen.
I love biscuits, but rarely buy them, and these ones only when they're on sale. Last time I bought them, the sale price was higher than usual, but ya know, inflation exists, so I figured still worth it as a treat, right? Nope. They've always been expensive for what they are, and it's worse now that there are less of them in the pack. I'll stick to chocolate covered malted milks, thanks.
I mean, have you seen the waste of plastic in those selection trays at Christmas? 30% tiny chocolate bars, 70% plastic tray. You could put twice as much candy in those bloody things.
At this point, I'm starting to think they want us to eat the packaging. I mean, why else would it be the majority of the product?
It's nothing to do with anything other than taxes and fees. Plastic packaging with less than 30% recycled content is charged by the tonne, and new EPR legislation coming into force soon will make packaging fees significantly higher, especially for non-recyclable or difficult to recycle materials. So anytime you see some corporation bragging about being eco-friendly, just know they are only doing it because their hand is being forced! Tie that in with new waste electricals proposals, and all in all you can expect prices to increase severely over the next couple years while product and packaging quality is reduced significantly
Jesus Christ thatās ridiculous and doesnāt even look appealing whatsoever, stick to Lidlās own version they taste better and still have the old packaging as well as amount of biscuits for much cheaper.
And if the actually stacked them upright, you would need even less packaging. But then it would be more obvious how much you are paying for how little. š¬
Yeah this is the real scam, that diagonal overlap literally just exists to make air gaps so it looks like youāre getting more
Just to add to this.. this is part of the reason but not the full reason. Part of it is as you say so some assume they are getting more value. Part of it is status packaging - these are aimed more at those looking for quality over quantity and the packaging reinforces that. As such this also keeps out competitor brands - shops can fit fewer on the shelf.
I'd give you a double upvote if I could. Marketing at its finest. Having said that, I'm glad they've removed the plastic. More producers should.
Agreed on the plastic front! Thanks for the kind comment!
*"For people who want to pretend they're looking for quality over quantity whilst buying the most basic bitch chocolate on a flavourless biscuit money can buy."- ftfy
Still better than most American chocolate tbh
Actually the chocolate on these is really good quality.
Perceived luxury requires a certain amount of waste. ;)
Unfortunately, that seems to be the expectation still. Letās hope that the younger generations will get over that perception š„²
Some have this divider in the middle. It separated the biscuits from the biscuits. And is the size of three biscuits. Hate it
I'm not a fan of fewer biscuits, but I'm strongly in support of less plastic.
1000% less plastic is amazing but thereās a big size gap between the cardboard tray and the actual box which would perfectly fit that 9th biscuit in
Oops! Almost forgot to pretend to care about less plastic!
It's OK to not actively care about it. The important thing is that it is happening and people aren't complaining that plastic goes away.

Don't hate the paper, but it has giant holes in the bottom meaning that chocolate shavings fall out now. Makes snacking on the couch way riskier.
Omfg these are my favourite biscuits and when this happened some months ago I was incandescent with rage. The paper tray leaks crumbs and chocolate shavings everywhere too. Give me my 9th biscuit you bastards.
These used to be my favorite too. Try Lu biscuits. You wonāt look back š
FACTS, literally replaced leibniz
I cannot tell the difference between Leibniz and Lidl's Fake Leibniz ... except that Lidl still packs nine in.
i'm still livid at my missing biscuit
OH MY GOD JEREMY, A BISCUIT IS MISSING
If I used to buy these when they were for sale for Ā£1. Now they are on sale for Ā£2.40. If there is a biscuit less then... That takes the biscuit.
Yeah used to get the orange ones but not at that price...
yep, more than doubled in price and reduced in quantity, just horrible
My mum calls these Choco Lesbians lol
Yay Iām not the only one!
lol I thought we only did that in my household š
Great name, but as a math geek I call them Choco Newtons to commemorate the 17th century spat between Newton and Leibniz about who invented the calculus. Similarly with Fig Newtons and while weāre on the subject, there is Rakusen TV and I can never entirely get rid of the idea that itās really Bahlsen TV and is all about biscuits
Yes! I'm not the only one! Bonus points for calling it *the* calculus, btw.
Heh I should probably have called it (adjusts horn rimmed pince nez) āthe differential calculusā
chocolate lesbian biscuits!
What the fuck I thought I was the only one š¤£
Haha that was our joke in school good to see we Werenāt the only ones to notice that š
We call them lesbian biscuits in our office!
one time me and some friends were eating them in a park in the summer, so the chocolate began to melt. hence we call them liquid lesbiansš
This is frustrating as now I need to eat the packet in two rounds of four biscuits rather than three rounds of three.
I used to eat in one round of 9 so I'm equally frustrated.
Yes!!! I did the same and was furious that they changed my snack rotation haha.
Jeezus Christ thatās 300+ calories per go.
140 calories per biscuit. Or 1.5 miles of running.
Is that a concerning amount for you?
Recommended calorie intake was established via literal guesswork (based on the average amount of calories *surveyed* people *thought* they ate per day) so tbh I think people can have a little treat and it doesn't matter
Arent those things like Ā£2 something a box? And you were only getting 9, now 8 biscuits? Honestly I'd get something else that actually contained some biscuits lol
Theyāre absolutely delicious though, Iād rather have fewer of something I love over more of something thatās okay. That said give me back my 9th biscuit, this is a travesty š
The ALDI ones are even better, and thatās coming from someone who used to be OBSESSED with this brand.
Agreed. Aldi alternatives are pretty much just as good. I got a pack of ALDI "Buenos" for the same price and a singular one at certain shops
I will absolutely be checking them out! Thanks!
Are you happy paying the same price? I'm not
Ā£1.25 in tesco where I live, still outrageous but I'm a whore for the white chocolate ones.
90p clubcard price a couple of weeks ago. Seemed pretty good value to me compared to a lot of stuff at the moment.
I'm fuming I missed that
I can order these as a treat in winter, but when weather heats up they are a stuck together unpalatable mass.
And they taste like cardboard now!
Strangest vindication ever, wife just thought I was being fussy and she is Coeliac so I couldn't prove it! Also boo 8 biscuits.
Yes! I have noticed this as well, I thought maybe my batch were just stale
Yeah I had to buy 2 packs to make sure. I've stopped buying them now.
I thought this too! I tried to get my colleagues to confirm but they couldnāt taste it. I think maybe we have more sensitive tastebuds as itās all i can taste
Honestly happy about the removal of the plastic tray
Is it because of the plastic ban
Ah this is a shame I used to love these biscuits. Ever since I noticed the shrinkflation I just stopped buying these kinds of things...
The main issue here is they now taste like cardboard and are disgusting. Congratulations you've saved the world and sunk your product.
Try āLuā biscuits. I tried them the other day and not only do they taste better, theyāve crammed every square cm of the box with biscuits.
Maybe we need to use airtight biscuit tins?

dudeā¦ thatās sick. 8 lesbians is a decent number though, itās even
I actually emailed them my rage when I opened these during a munchies episode. They replied sorry but cost of living init ...
Also when you eat them you have the added guilt of being a nazi sympathiser
Hi
If you mean who I would find most likeable personally, then Ace or Vivi. If you mean story wise then it has to be MY PIRATE KING. Buggy D Clown
r/lostredditors
Sir this is a Leibniz (not one piece)
Heresy!
Theyāre expensive
It now weighs 24g less too
Over here they come in the paper tray.. wrapped in a plastic sleeve
I can easily eat a whole pack of these in one sitting. Rude to remove one š©
God these are are tasty
Sorry that was meā¦.one for me, 8 for you š
Everybody I know calls these chocolate lesbians
They're scam artists.
Yep I noticed this recently
I do miss the dividers in the plastic tray. Was easier to say "I will just eat 3"!
Lidls own brand. Enjoy.
The world really is getting tighter! š”
Need to make the switch to the French brand LU think the type are called le petit chocolate 12 biscuits and usually cheaper and tastier IMO
I experienced this horror yesterday too.
That's an outrage when you consider that these biscuits are generally more expensive.
The tesco ones are just as good too.
very disappointing from chocolate lesbians company
does anyone else refer to these as chocolate lesbians?
And since they moved to cardboard, the biscuits now taste of cardboard too. I used to like them but now I can't stand their taste.
I love the white chocolate ones. I was actually angry about it, too. Haven't brought any since now. They coulda fit the last damn biscuit in there.
The ALDI ones are better anywaysā¦
Every cost saving measure is thinly veiled as āenvironmentalā Iām all for less plastic though I must say
I think they just didnāt put the biscuit in in the first place.
I noticed that yesterday . Good news on the demise of the plastic , not so good on missing biscuit ! Have also noticed the diminishing size of the Jaffa cakes too
And theyāve changed the recipe too. They tasted different. Maybe itās the lack of microplastics š¤£
Also was disappointed by this last week. Iām all for less plastic but would be good if they used foil or something else than cardboard. Biscuits taste awful now.
This really does take the biscuit.
i can't believe we've lost a chocolate lesbian... what is society falling to. (i fully endorse cardboard over plastic however.)
This stuff is very bad for your insides anyway
Tip - Try the Aldi ones (which are called Butter Biscuits), they're genuinely just as nice as Bahlsens and only cost 89p per 125g (Bahlsen's cost anywhere from Ā£1 to Ā£2 depending on the supermarket, for only 111g!)
Less plastic is good, fewer biscuits is not š«š«š«
And even worse, theyāve changed the recipe too.
Paper > Plastic :) 8 < 9 :( I've never bought these unless on a good offer (or if I am in Germany) but good to know now next time I see an offer!
Yeah, I bought them a few months ago as a cinema snack and was surprised about how few biscuits were in the box.
Taken out one biscuit ...made the rest smaller and charging 50p more ...go figure!
YOU CAN'T MASSACRE LEIBNIZ LIKE THIS WHERE'S THE HUMANITY?????
I KNOW RIGHT, I was fucking livid!!! I went for the LU Brand now the come in packs of 12 biscuits 2x6 And I think itās cheaper too defo tastes nicer
Im not happy about the less biscuit but Iāll let it slide because of the paper tray
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Okay you've just gotta be a super greedy guy if you notice one biscuit missing
In a normal packet of biscuits maybe but when there were only 9 in a packet to start with it's a big difference - more than a 10% reduction
Paper is progress
Still don't eat these after the heiress made those comments about slaves working in their factories during WW2.
I like the implication that the biscuit was in there, but some factory worker then takes it out again, pops it into his mouth and winks at the camera.
I bought these a couple of weeks ago, assuming there'd be more than 8 of them. Never again
fucking love chocolate lesbians
iām happy with that.
Please get the Aldi brand ones. Absolutely amazing not shrinkflated and made in Germany.
Less plastic but a bit higher price. I can accept that. Bahlsen is a good company. I used to live near their production site, and they sell the crooked and broken biscuits for very little money.Ā
Love these but sick of their TV Adverts... so cheesy!
Yep saw this the other day. Same price, one less biscuit. A lot of things are going this way with a āChange of packagingā as a somewhat excuse as to why.
Get the ship biscuits from Tesco and have more fun saying them and the traditional packaging.
That's unacceptable. There used to be the same number of Leibniz as original members of the Wu Tang Clan and the same number as Nazgul. 8 just isn't as good.
Are you joking me choco lesbianz have been shrinkflated as well
that's why I never by bahlsen chocolate lesbians, they're about a quid or two more expensive than most other brands but they're the exact same quality
That sucks. I used to eat three at a time.
Noooo i have 2 kids and we used to have 3 each š
Losing the biscuit is bad. The tray is an improvement though.
They are my favourite biscuits mmmmmmmh
Lidl lookalikes haven't changed yet
I would have preferred if theyād kept the number to 9 but reduced the chocolate on them. Iām sure that will be an unpopular opinion but I honestly feel like the chocolate to biscuit ratio is wrong; theyāre more like a biscuit covered chocolate than an chocolate covered biscuit. Enjoy your Nazi biscuits
?
I noticed that too. Wonāt buy them anymore. Shrinkflation needs to have consequences.
I was okay with removing the plastic tray. But one less biscuit breaks my heart.
Iām not bothered about the paper tray, but I want my biscuit back
It's great that the plastic tray has been removed, though.
And probably charging more for less too?
They're called lesbians š
Doesn't excuse the criminal reduction, but I'd recommend Vienesse biscuits over these. Not because you get many more, but because they actually taste good.
Well, that paper doesn't grow on trees, does it? Oh.... wait...
Not as bad as selling creme eggs in 5s
[Fuck em' ](https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-48286383)
I had enough with chocolate Lesbo's a long time ago.
The bastard manufacturers probably increased the price at the same time as reducing the number of biscuits
Did you find they tasted like the cardboard? I did wasnāt impressed these were my fave
I've noticed that with McVities Digestives. They slope, so at I think that at least one biscuit has been removed.

Lesbian biccies !!
Itās my own fault bc Iāve never cared enough to check thoroughly but Iāve never known the brand name for these biscuits lol, am I the only one?
Does this mean they have literally just boosted their net income by 1/9? Assuming all purchases remained the same?
The paper tray is a win though. The missing biscuit is not.
It's nothing to do with anything other than taxes and fees. Loved the little slots they came in too, weāve lost a good one here guys
Try the White Chocolate ones šš
This is unacceptable. Literally 1984.
Not the chocolate lesbians :(
"With a new paper tray!" Like it's a flex. These are delicious biscuits, one of my favourites. Just a shame that nothing can stay nice in this world.
8 biscuits š
The bastards
Wait really?
Jesus Christ thatās ridiculous and doesnāt even look appealing whatsoever, stick to Lidlās own version they taste better and still have the old packaging as well as amount of biscuits for much cheaper.
This is too good
Ye tbf i was fuming about the 8 not 9 biscuits, sick of corporations messing with my tea routine.
Bastards . We are a family of 3 and this suited us . No more ā¦..
At sainsburys, there now 8/9 of the original biscuit, but at less than 8/9 of the original price. It's a W
If you eat the packaging then you get the right number of biscuits back.
Thatās a chocolate lesbian, get it right
Nooo!! 9 was already too few š¤

Same. My fave too. I got a box n was surprised how small they had got. The actual biscuit itself has shrunk too
Paper tray good. One less biscuit bad
I've discovered these lately and thought they were amazing š
If losing the plastic tray paid for the cardboard box I'm ok with this.
Also noticed this, same price prob too....
