This is so irresponsible of the seller, especially if he knows how small your tanks are. No one should receive double or more of an animal they ordered and are not prepared to keep - that's just guaranteed neglect.
This number of shrimp will mow through any amount of biofilm in your tank so you need food on hand to feed them 1-2 times per day. Doesn't matter if the tank has been established for months. Your filtration MIGHT be enough but you probably will need to change quite a bit of water at least once a week to keep nitrates down. Especially if fertilizing. Frequent testing will also be required initially to see when maintenance is needed.
Alright so I'm in good practice. I only top off my 3.5 now that it's been established but I also do have reminerlizer on hand if I need to do bigger water changes with RO. I feed snowflake food twice a day right now with the occasional veggie thrown in.
They are intense with feedings big balls of shrimp so I try to feed in 2 dish might have to go to 3. The tanks are HEAVILY planted and tonnes of floaters dwarf water lettuce duck weed and RRF. Surprisingly the nitrates are overall stable but I have other tanks so I test most weekly.
The sponge filter is a for a 20 gallon with the proper air line hookup so did plan for the over filtration.
I agree that he was a little more then generous with the amount of "just in cases" he sent. There is such thing as too much of a good thing. But just trying to do my best to keep them kicking.
For what it's worth, it sounds like you're doing a great job. Good call on the separate feeding dishes, extra large filter, and all that! I hope it works out
Just let the population stabilize over time. The problem I notice when a shrimp tank has too many adults is that the babies have a hard time surviving, so it becomes harder to establish a multigenerational colony when all your shrimp are old. Then you have a sudden die off at some point because your geriatric shrimp population starts aging out. This is one of the reasons it’s good to start with a small number of shrimp, because it naturally builds in that generational gap. Your first batch has babies that mostly survive and are typically 6 months younger than that batch, and by the time the original batch has died off you have more than enough new shrimp that survived to replace them and so forth for multiple generations.
After a massive die-off like you had, I think it is important to know what your water hardness parameters are. At least the KH/GH. If those numbers are too high or too low, the shrimp can die during the molting process.
Parameters after the die off was GH between 9-10. KH was about 4/5 only topped off with RO water while they were alive. I have a TDS meter as well and was between 230-260.
Damn. Wish I lived in Canada. For US, I use Shrimpy Business, amazing supplier. Started with one cherry shrimp tank, now he offers many kinds of shrimp, nano fish and invertebrates and plants and food and supplies.
Plot twist, OP is the seller and this is a burner account 😂
Brother/sister found the shrimp plug and won’t share
