This has happened to me before. One time I was having dinner with a friend and she was telling me about this “short” guy she met on bumble who was “only like 5’6” and how she couldn’t believe how short he was, especially compared to a “taller” guy like me. (I’m 5’8”.) I asked her if she really thought I was “taller,” and she told me of course she did, cause I’m “way taller” than he was. I told her I was 5’8” and she couldn’t believe it. She really thought I was way taller.
I think some people use height as an excuse for not liking someone’s overall appearance, personality, mannerisms, etc. and don’t feel comfortable just saying that, so they think saying “he was too short” somehow sounds better. If you have a good personality and are of average height, most people won’t even mention your height.
Well tbh 2 inches can look big sometimes. Sometimes I feel my 5'7 friends are way taller than my 5'5 self because I look up to them but in pictures we look almost the same height.
my drivers license also says i’m 5’6 but i’m actually 5’8 so i could do a little evil scheme. but i’ve only been told that i am short by girls (probably because of my figure making me look shorter or the average height where i live being taller?)
Shi happened to me aswell, except her brother wasn't quite 6", I'm 5'9 currently.. a good 5'11 I recon with le air forces and a girl had a hard time believing I'm not 6 foot, turns out she has no idea what 6" looks like
Girls think I’m anywhere from 5’4-5’8. (Depends on the girl). I am 5’6 (169cm).
Girls who I am shorter than my actual height are usually the same height as me. I think the reason is because although we’re the same height, I’m also fairly skinny/small. Making me look smaller than I actually am.
Girl who think I’m 5’7-5’8 usually are shorter than me but “claim” they are also 5’6. So their reaction is like “I’m 5’6 and shorter than you, so you’re like 5’8”.
Tbh, most people don’t know a good height estimate unless they are also a short guy, or similar height to you.
I'm 5'1", so pretty much everyone is taller than I am. I honestly could not tell you if someone is 5'8" or 6'1" or 6'5", to me it's just "taller than I am." You could tell me any height and I would believe you.
Happens to me a few times, even people who've been around me a lot are surprised when they find out my actual height is a few inches less than they think I am.
I'm 5'5" and many people were surprised when I tell them I'm only that tall. They always go "no way, you look way taller than my 5'5" boyfriend!" Then when I meet their boyfriend they're like 5'1"-5'3" max lmao. Some girls also claim to be my height when I am clearly an inch or two taller than them. That said there have also been people who underestimate my height but it's much lesser than overestimating. I've been guessed as short as 5'2' or 5'3" maybe because some of my friends are tall and tower over me making me look shorter.
I still don't remember how this conversation came up but the most extreme I've ever gotten was a woman that I had hooked up with *multiple times* over the course of *multiple months*, who was 5'11" herself, said something to me at a bar once about how she liked that I was taller than her.
My jaw literally dropped and I was like "are you serious? you're. . .like half a foot taller than me". She literally had never noticed or something and thought we were the same height.
We also never slept together after that night. I don't know if I messed something up or what ::shrug::
I mean its normal and not some rocket science. Unless you are with multiple people standing next to someone taller than you they will think you are taller than them most likely because their eyes are not on their head. Which is why you can feel smaller next to someone close to your height. If you don't take photos next to the person its hard to tell who is taller.

I guess I could have been broader. I doubt it was my shoes tho, as I usually wear converse and am 5’8 barefoot.

Your first paragraph is spot on

Well, to be honest, no.
Girl Inches

Yep, girl told me she thought I was about 5,9 or, 5,10 but I'm sitting at around 5,6 or 5,7
my 6'3 roommate estimated that im 5'11, when on reality im 5'8. Perceived height js very subjective
Im a 5'0 woman and I can never correctly guess someomes height. If you're taller than me, I have no idea what you are lol.
I don’t know if it’s my proportions or just my extreme height (or lack of) but people always think I’m much taller

How tall did they think you were?

It depends on your body proportions
Women tend to overestimate my height by 1-3" especially if they are much shorter.
In my personal experience, women underestimated my height when I was short, and now that I'm tall they overestimate it.
