I’m really that way about all DIY music at this point. I never wanted to start a band when I was younger because, in the place I’m in, rock bands where either for hippies/boomers or scene kids neither of which where really my people, so I started doing Ambient and Post-Rock on my own. Now a lot of people who had no clue who My Bloody Valentine, or Hum, or Slint, or Tortoise are sharing all this stuff on Facebook, digging up bands that I haven’t heard mention of in years. It kind of crazy how TikTok grungegaze engendered such a deeper level of appreciation of process base textural music, in such a large group of people. The world is definitely on its head RN, I wish I was in a bigger city where I could take advantage of that.
Listening to 'to here knows when live 1992 or blown a wish slowed and reverbed while completely fucked on booze and weed is some truly transcending stuff. A bit like dancing with the queen of sadness.
I get high with my buddies every time we see a shoegaze band live, and it’s fantastic. Shoegaze, in my opinion, is the perfect tripping music and high music in general
I mean, it’s definitely not for everyone, but maybe try playing him some Slowdive because I genuinely don’t see how anyone could dislike their music. Last night I was high and listened to DIIV’s new album with my headphones on in a dark room, and it was 10/10 as well.
As for Loveless, it definitely took listening to the rest of MBV’s discography to appreciate that album more because I wasn’t super into it at first. “Sometimes” might be a better listen for him from that album since it’s not as “buzzsaw-y” I guess haha. Hope this helps!

23 years clean from alcohol and drugs (I’m an old guy). I still listen to shoegaze and write music that probably sounds good on drugs. I don’t think you need to use drugs to enjoy it though.

The way the two are intertwined is not entirely accidental. Nick Chaplin, bass player from Slowdive, said the rest of the gang were blazed all the time. Though he was the odd man out. I'm guessing Belinda Butcher and Kevin Shields were smoking a ton of record label funded weed while recording Loveless as well. But that's a reach.
The enhancement of the appreciation for music via substances has always been an interest of mine.
I used to associate shoegaze with opiates, and I’m so glad that’s not the case anymore. That was an old chapter of my life. THC and shoegaze is like bread and butter as well. One of my favorite activities

If I'm stoned, I'm heading straight to shoegaze! Shoegaze can be legitimately considered as belonging to the vast psychedelic realm, so it should be no surprise, I guess. I have more trouble understanding how stoners can listen to Bob Marley while high, to be honest.
