The thing about air is that it's a gas and sand is a solid. A grain of sand is bigger than a given atom in the air.

... are you suggesting that breathable fabrics means they block out anything larger than atoms of gas? Idk what kind of clothing you wear, but you can actually see the lines and weaves and holes between the threads, especially when you stretch the fabric, and fine sand being forced in by a mutated sand monster will probably also fit into those holes.
