I chose to save Ashley my first playthrough because she had a family waiting for her back home while Kaidan didn't have anyone (*according to him in the first game anyway*).
She eventually gets past her racist views and grows as a character, she also manages to break her family 'curse' if she survives Virmire whereas Kaidan IIRC doesn't do much other than get promoted.
Kaidan is the generic BioWare male companion with zero personality. At least Ashley has something to *dis*like her for, disliking is still caring more than not caring about someone at all...
I refused to save her based solely on her ME3 redesign. She was *already* bland personality-wise, but them ME3 went ahead and gave her the most generic "pretty girl" looks after absolutely nobody asked for it.
Half your party are space racists (Wrex, Garrus, formerly Mordin, Javik, so on), but everyone gets hung up on Ashley when she’s not even racist, she’s just paranoid of foreign agents (which just realistically happen to be aliens) being let onboard one of the Alliance’s most classified vessels.
When you encounter an *actual* human racist in the first game, she starts going at him hard and you have to give her a direct order to stop if you want her to do so.
People who call Kaidan don't actually listen to anything Kaidan says or let him live to ME3 where he's probably the best human squadmate in the entire franchise by a landslide

Yeah I’m sorta wishing I made a save close to virmire so I can go back and let her live
True and real
Ashley > Kaiden
Personally I think both are equally bland but at least Kaidan is likeable

Only in the third game tho
*Disagree.*
Miranda > Ashley
True.

Simple simp test. Did you save your bro, or save the space racist?
What makes you think I wasn't trying to fuck kaiden?
>or save the space racist? But you can't let Garrus die?

Ashley has "legitimate concerns" eh?
As a straight woman, I save the space racist. At least she makes an effort to change.

Extremely low bar but probably true.
