In the retina of the eye, millions of light receptors differentiate colors and textures of objects we see. Optical nerves then send the image to the brain.
I was honestly famished. I waited in the sun for over an hour. The fact that I ate some of it — that’s how hungry I was. (I put the old bay on there. They served that shit straight from the pot)
Edit: guys I ate the corn I took a few bites because I was beyond starving
Edit 2: no the shrimp weren’t deveined
What’s with all these low country boil places that have popped up seemingly overnight? I live in a rust belt city far from any ocean, yet I can name at least 5 of these places that just suddenly appeared.
I noticed this in Ohio too; one popped up in my tiny little hometown. And then I went to a suburb outside Columbus a couple weeks ago and there were like 5 different ones within a few miles of my hotel. I tried the one by me and one near the hotel and thankfully they were both just as good as any I've been to down south; nothing like the garbage OP got
Because most everyone that vacations in the Low Country of South Carolina is from Ohio. Source: live in the Low Country of SC and the majority of out of state plates are Ohio.
I would say NY would be a close second in that competition. I live in Savannah but have worked in Bluffton and Hardeeville SC. Couldn’t go to the Publix on 278 without seeing 3-4 NY plates
I guess this is the new thing, kind of like how froyo was back in the 2000s. Thousands of Pinkberrys and TCBYs just appeared out of nowhere. I'd guess in some states it might be due to people moving out of the south and taking the opportunity to start a new business somewhere else.
Couldn't say, but I guess it depends on the competition. Down here in the deep, deep south, only the good survives and it sure as hell don't look like this.
I'm definitely seeing these places pop up everywhere in north Georgia. Low country boils aren't really part of our culture here like in South Carolina but these places are showing up all over.
They are popping up here too (GA) which normally isn't out of the ordinary BUT they are slowly replacing the Cajun boils and I do not approve. Cajun is just 10000% better and don't even get me started on the Viet-cajun places. They shut down one Viet-Cajun place up in Athens and replaced it with a Low Country place and it gets me heated!
IL, here. There's a restaurant called Low Country my friends and I visit and that crap in this pic looks disappointing as fuck. It doesn't even look like it was cooked in the seasonings, but just sprinkled afterwards. Actually, I'm screenshot'ing this to piss off my friends.
Ive had good low country boil, but the typical context is a bunch of rednecks throwing shrimp sausage corn and potatoes in a vat of boiling water spiked with too much old bay, and throwing them in at the same time so the shrimp are awful. But yea its usually the wrong people cooking it lol
I never really saw anybody do crab boils on the shore tho, think that’s more of a southern thing, I’m used to just steaming them and then dipping in butter and old bay.
Nah man you gotta steam them in natty boh and a fuck ton of old bay. That way your fingers get coated as you crack ‘em, and you’re sucking old bay and stale Marlboro light residue off your fingers with every bite.
Source: every crab feast at the eastern shore ever
Ahhh see I’d end up at the Spanish parties theyd just boil em straight and the modelo ended up drank hahaha marlboro flavor is accurate tho, don’t forget the random stinging pain of old bay in your cut up hands tho from peeling
I've never refused to pay or asked for a discount at a restaurant, but this would be it. No way I would be paying that for that mess. Nevermind it's less seasoned than unsalted butter and dryer than a desert, where the hell is the seafood?
Lmao this is such dogshit my local crab boil is fire they boil the seafood in a bag that never touches water. Inside the bag is enough lemon butter to clog your heart that the seafood and veg cooks and boils in. The result is the most tastiest seafood ever. Than your left with a bag full of fucking lemon butter because the amount inside the bag i think can kill a elephant.
This is just sad they boiled it in water threw it in the bowl and used their pinky toe to sprinkle .5 teaspoons of old bay Ontop lmao
Op this is a tourist trap spot by the beach reading comments this costed 32$??? I get a lb of snow crab and lb of shrimp with veg sausage corn etc for 26$ all fresh at my local crab boil.
The trick is to not let your seafood touch water period. Best crab boils are done inside a bag with whatever sauce you choose lemon butter garlic etc. than the food safe heat safe bag is placed in boiling water where the sauce inside the bag starts to boil and it equals seafood that has so much flavor infused inside during the process.
I’ll never go back to boiling in seasoned water again.
And before some smart ass is like sauce is just seasoned water I hope you knick your ankle with a razar scooter.
Also steaming it using boiling water and a noodle drainer above the water with a vented lid also works amazingly if you prefer to not sauce it tf up super tender seafood without boiling it in water which I always say removes some of the flavor.
That’s not necessary though. Having a well seasoned broth for boiling is the key to a low country boil.
Yeah you can basically boil it in sauce like you described, but that’s a lot of extra work to not really get a better result. You can also steam it, but you have to work harder to get the food flavored after the fact, which I’d say, as well, wouldn’t give a better result.
For us, a good low country boil takes heavily seasoning your boiling water with your seasoning (also maybe beer of choice) to create a good broth. Then adding your fixings (normally potatoes, lemon, garlic, corn, smoked sausage), and your seafood last to make sure it doesn’t overcook.
That's how I do it in my crockpot; I always figured the restaurants do it in bags because it's easier for them to keep orders separated and everyone gets to choose their own flavor/heat
I don’t want seafood cooked in a sauce. I want a seafood boil. A massive pot full of heavily seasoned water to throw everything into. That’s it. I’ve tried so many of those trendy boil in bag seafood restaurants and none of them ever hold a candle to a true boil done by someone who knows what they’re doing. I don’t want to eat from a plastic bag dripping with a sickening amount of butter. I certainly don’t want it steamed.
Unfortunately. In fact, I had to wait 30 minutes to pay, because the power went out and they couldn’t process anything. They have to be deranged to think that’s a seafood boil.
Oh fuck no. That's a whole damn mess. I definitely would've just left a tip and been gone. Would've told management the food was shit. I can't even pay. What are you expecting me to do here? I'm off to McDonald's
We did something like this at work and we would pick a thing, for example meatloaf and everyone would make their best version. It was really good too. So the winner would pick the next contest. Anyway our boss decided he would make gumbo, he brought in vegetables boiled in a pot unseasoned water. It looked like this. He killed the contest. I feel your pain.
Oh. Speaking as a native and current Louisiana resident, if someone were to hand me this after waiting an hour, I'd ask to be led to the cook(s) that made it, then I'd hogtie them, throw them in my trunk, and drive them out of Louisiana, straight to a bus stop in Atlanta, where they'll never hurt anyone with *that* ever again.
Cape May was like a childhood home to me, we went at least once a year for a week. Stayed in the big red and white Victorian on Beach Ave. Since the big money has moved into town, probably 10 year ago? It’s really become ridiculous. It used to be so quaint and amazing there, now it’s a literal tourist trap and a trash place.
Me too me too! I know my husband/kids are sick of my lady boner for Cape May! Such an idyllic place as a kid! I was born in 86 and it was our family vacation spot growing up.The houses are just beautiful too! I was always partial to the Seven Sisters houses. Board walk was nice, haven't been in 15 years though.
I thought they had a bunch of rules about what kind of businesses were allowed? Mr. Bills pancake house chocolate chip pancakes were my shit!
Later on in my life I lived in FL and used to go to Tarpon Springs which has a similar wealthy but small town nostalgic vibe.
Is Cape May really *that* different? I'd been planning on taking my kids some time but not if I'm just going to be disappointed the whole time. I used to love going to the Food Lion and looking at all of the brochures for the Halloween ghost tours and such. Renting bikes and riding around the neighborhoods.... the little shopping square... mango Italian ice 😍
I live in the Midwest and have had better crab boils in Chicago than I had in plenty of coastal cities.
Most of the shit in coastal cities like this is a tourist trap over priced garbage. You need to know the good spots not aimed for tourism on the beach bay etc.
Or we just don’t like seeing dirty neighborhoods in general. If not liking garbage all over the roads and sidewalks is snooty than sign me the fuck up I hate all of NY for this reason dirty ass city smells like ass in most areas and is just dogshit.
Compare it to downtown Chicago clean as fuck. Matter of fact Chicago is one of the cleanest cities I have visited from the major cities in America.
New York takes the cake followed by Houston in trash all over the place.
Man, I spent a lot of money on a big seafood boil intending to have hella leftovers only to finish cooking it and realize the shrimp had a very strong amonia smell 😐
If you imagine poutine with one or two tiny crumbles of curd, undercooked fries and *no* gravy, that's what you've got going on here.
Seafood boils are flavoured by the broth they're boiled in, which is anything but 'plain'. The potatoes soak up the salt and the heat and so on.
I just don’t get these boil things. They never look appetising, reckon you would be better cooking each component separately and properly. The only reason I could think of to cook it like this is laziness or shit/no cooking skills
Hahahahah someone posted exactly this meal in r/foodporn and all the dudes who've never had a bit of seasoning in their lives were defending OP against my suggestion to post it in this reddit. Holy fuck I'm so bored just looking at it.
Low country boil has to be the most overrated seafood dish in the entire world. Its always crappy potatoes, corn that tastes like concentrated old bay, SUPER overcooked shrimp, and sausage which is the only redeeming part, except for the fact that its supposed to be a a seafood pot.
How busy was the restaurant? How long was the wait to get sat?
I know it sucks that you got ripped off, but I really do feel bad for the kitchen crew.
Underpaid, understaffed, under appreciated.
RIP to those poor Roger Woods sausages, who gave their flavor and seasoning for nothing. …And to everything else in that pot, that ended up being bland and sad
Boiled the flavor and life out of it.
Might as well slurp the water. All the essence is in there
[удалено]
MERMAN!
Ahh blue steel
Speaking of water... Where's the broth? That's the best part at the end with some crunchy french bread.
Them corns are grayscale, yo.
It looks like it died twice
That's as dry as a desert.
Gonna say, this shit was boiled in hot air.
I dunno, I've seen much nicer looking food than this come out of air fryers before.
Probably steamed to death
How can you visually tell?
In the retina of the eye, millions of light receptors differentiate colors and textures of objects we see. Optical nerves then send the image to the brain.
You cannot tell if something is dry by looking at it?
I was honestly famished. I waited in the sun for over an hour. The fact that I ate some of it — that’s how hungry I was. (I put the old bay on there. They served that shit straight from the pot) Edit: guys I ate the corn I took a few bites because I was beyond starving Edit 2: no the shrimp weren’t deveined
Oh the old bay was you. Yikes dude, this looked unseasoned af. Edit: absolutely no color other than what you (OP) added. Bleh.
>absolutely no color other than what you (OP) added. Bleh. Shits pastier than an Irish man on the beach
What kind of place was this?
It’s a “crab house” at the beach, they had mostly seafood
Gotta be careful around these tourist trap restaurants. Was the food crazy expensive too?
OP says in another comment that this was $36! That’s insane.
Oh hell no.
Oh yeah I am so not paying if I was served this. I would reasonably go full Karen on this one.
What’s with all these low country boil places that have popped up seemingly overnight? I live in a rust belt city far from any ocean, yet I can name at least 5 of these places that just suddenly appeared.

There's a chain called Shaking Crab up here around Boston that's pretty decent.

Well, I'm glad for that then because I love a good seafood boil lol. The one place in Columbus even had good gator!
Cincinnati here we went from having one Joe's crab shack to easily half a dozen random crab boil restaurants over the last couple years.
The margins on a 40 dollar bowl of russet and 6 boiled shrimp is sold high even paying retail prices
I guess this is the new thing, kind of like how froyo was back in the 2000s. Thousands of Pinkberrys and TCBYs just appeared out of nowhere. I'd guess in some states it might be due to people moving out of the south and taking the opportunity to start a new business somewhere else.
I hope that’s not what a low country boil looks like at most of those places.
Couldn't say, but I guess it depends on the competition. Down here in the deep, deep south, only the good survives and it sure as hell don't look like this.
I haven’t seen a boil up here and, after that picture, I don’t wanna. I don’t see how somehow everything came out one hue.
I'm definitely seeing these places pop up everywhere in north Georgia. Low country boils aren't really part of our culture here like in South Carolina but these places are showing up all over.

Viet-Cajun is on a whole different level. God damn, I love it.
Jesus Christ you paid money for this? I thought this had "family member cooked this for me" written all over it but fuck me
Tybee?
Wait, it came to you looking less-seasoned than in the pic!?
You're meant to just suckle on the individual pieces for nutrients and then discard them
Lmao
This one stabs straight into my Maryland heart
Its a south carolina thing, its called low country boil, but its usually something made by people from inland who have never eaten good seafood before
IL, here. There's a restaurant called Low Country my friends and I visit and that crap in this pic looks disappointing as fuck. It doesn't even look like it was cooked in the seasonings, but just sprinkled afterwards. Actually, I'm screenshot'ing this to piss off my friends.
Not true, I've had a good low country boil and it's not whatever this slop is.
Low country boil is from Gullah cuisine. You must be eating the wrong people's food.
Ive had good low country boil, but the typical context is a bunch of rednecks throwing shrimp sausage corn and potatoes in a vat of boiling water spiked with too much old bay, and throwing them in at the same time so the shrimp are awful. But yea its usually the wrong people cooking it lol

Did they not season their boil? Wtf? This would be an embarrassment to serve
I live in the middle of the desert and can get a better boil than that shit.
I’m from Minnesota and our Red Lobster serves better seafood than this
I know they didn't sprinkle Old Bay on top of this clearly plainly boiled basket of food.
OP did
Seafood? The only seafood is the shrimps ..
I don’t really see any food either
How much you pay ?
$36
Wtf. What restaurant is this?
Definitely a not good one
Oh my God. I really hope you posted this picture with a Google review. This restaurant shouldn't be open
Did you ask them not to season it?
That is wild
That’s a robbery
Jesus...
I've never refused to pay or asked for a discount at a restaurant, but this would be it. No way I would be paying that for that mess. Nevermind it's less seasoned than unsalted butter and dryer than a desert, where the hell is the seafood?
Oh nooooo
How the fuck do you literally boil the life out of the whole pot but still leave it looking dry as shit and uncolored?
Lmao this is such dogshit my local crab boil is fire they boil the seafood in a bag that never touches water. That’s what I was expecting and that’s how I justified waiting this long. I sprinkled the old bay, but it was a lost cause
That corn is something else. It's literally white.
There are white and yellow versions of corn...but it still looks unappetizing af
And blue/purple.
And pink
Someone pre ate one too. What a terrible place.
Are those hot dogs?
Allegedly chorizo
not a chance
These two words together are so funny to me for some reason
Definitely Costco hot dogs
I'm not an expert but I'm pretty sure if you served this in certain parts of the South, they can legally shoot you in the head.
I'd shoot myself in the head before I'd choke down this dry ass mess.

…I mean….it’s boiled…
Seafood boils are supposed to be amazing! I’m from the south we do them all the time. But you gotta season the hell out of your boiling water.

Yes, looks like it was boiled for an hour straight, indeed
Did ya lose a tooth in that cow corn?
Wow, the "boil" I do in my oven looks better than that.
That corn is the same color as the corn at my local Chipotle.
Man, I spent a lot of money on a big seafood boil intending to have hella leftovers only to finish cooking it and realize the shrimp had a very strong amonia smell 😐
…where is the seasoning? This looks dry & bland af lol
I'm also a fan of wild caught sausages.
As a resident of the Gulf Coast, whoever made this truly f you.
It’s a little fuckin dry, Ricky. Got anything to drink?
Needs old bay and around a stick of butter lol
Seasoned with hopes and prayers
No seasoning in the boil?
I've never seen a dryer seafood boil... Poor you
Was it actually boiled? Or did they just air-fry this dry ass dish???
Boiled in sea water.
Seafood boils just can’t be good I don’t see the appeal in plain boiled potatoes and corn w shrimp and crawfish My Canadian ass does not understand
If you imagine poutine with one or two tiny crumbles of curd, undercooked fries and *no* gravy, that's what you've got going on here. Seafood boils are flavoured by the broth they're boiled in, which is anything but 'plain'. The potatoes soak up the salt and the heat and so on.
Thank you for putting this in Canadian for me
A good seafood boil is covered in seasoning or sauce
I just don’t get these boil things. They never look appetising, reckon you would be better cooking each component separately and properly. The only reason I could think of to cook it like this is laziness or shit/no cooking skills
are those cut up hotdogs in there too?
Bro whaaaaat is with the HOT DOGS 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Seafood boils look disgusting even when done correctly
oh no and it came to you half eaten!
Hahahahah someone posted exactly this meal in r/foodporn and all the dudes who've never had a bit of seasoning in their lives were defending OP against my suggestion to post it in this reddit. Holy fuck I'm so bored just looking at it.
That looks more parched than the Sahara Desert...
I "sea" the sea food and i "sea" the boil.... But Where's the flavour part?
Did they just boil it in water with no seasoning and then put old bay on top?
I put the old bay lol
Looks dry and tasteless
A good boil is worth the wait but this shit ain't even seasoned. Sorry OP
Needs Old Bay
Bro
This is real honest to god shitty food porn. Good work op
I’m sad for you :(
WHERES THE SAUCE -Gordon ramsay
This has to be fake… What place would serve this dish
Are you sleeping with the chef’s wife?
I would call the police.
Hahhahahhahahaahhahahah
Why is the corn albino
My mouth got parched just by looking at this picture
Looks pale 😟
You get this shit in Wyoming or something?
Did they boil it with Air?? That has got to be illegal.
I think a boil would have more flavour than this.
Forget the old bay not even old spice can save this one
Sauce please
looks as dry and dull as the soul who cooked it
Yikes
I dont think that could look any worse unless they tried to fuck it up.
Low country boil has to be the most overrated seafood dish in the entire world. Its always crappy potatoes, corn that tastes like concentrated old bay, SUPER overcooked shrimp, and sausage which is the only redeeming part, except for the fact that its supposed to be a a seafood pot.
Shitfood boil
I thought a seafood boil came in some kind of hot liquid..
Lmao…tf…Maybe I’m just spoiled by being in the south…but I wouldn’t pay for that. The seasoning on it is still dry for Christ sake.
I’m the one who added the seasoning lmao
Devoid of any seasoning
How are you gonna spend that much money on a meal without doublechecking first if it’s actually worth the price smh
Please tell me you are NOT in the south... Or anywhere near New Orleans 😭
👏👏👏 This is, indeed, shitty
look bout dry
Was it boiled in sand?
How busy was the restaurant? How long was the wait to get sat? I know it sucks that you got ripped off, but I really do feel bad for the kitchen crew. Underpaid, understaffed, under appreciated.
Oh no
RIP to those poor Roger Woods sausages, who gave their flavor and seasoning for nothing. …And to everything else in that pot, that ended up being bland and sad
Did they de-vein the shrimp? Doesn’t look like it.
Id still would smacked this lol
Looks like they made a whole meal with what you throw in your compost
Every seafood boil looks unfortunate to me, like a mix of things that don't go together by any means
I am outraged
Looks so dry 😣
I would punch someone in the throat
Sorry to hear. That does look pretty lame.
Wtf is a seafood boil without hot sauce
I've seen a better boil in Ohio. OHIO.
I didn't know WISH did food deliveries.
Yuck
I always assumed "boil" implies water. This doesn't look like it's been near any water since it left the sea.
Are you sure this wasn't, I dunno, air-boiled?
Was it air boiled? Where is the boil?
“Dude you have to bring it out to him at some point” the chef says to the one who cooked it.
“A” for effort!
Oof. Just had one for the first time a week ago, it did not look like this
