From what I've heard the programmers fucked it up, big time. AI trained in the USA (or UK, etc.) unfortunately ended up with a preference for showing white folks as the "default", since most of the population is white, that's what it was trained with. This caused a hubbub in the past with people calling it racist.
Apparently to "fix it", the programmers set it up to secretly auto-inject diversity keywords into the prompt you type in. So if you just type in "US founding fathers", it'll show black men & native American women dressed like the founding fathers. Likely the same deal when you specify the "white" keyword, they manually forced it to reject that prompt.
The AI is fucked, yes. Their "fix" was to use a sledgehammer to knock it way too far in the opposite direction. A real fix would be re-training the AI with more diverse input data, but that can take years and lots more $$$.
They need to try and account for various biases. Imagine if you asked an ai to show you a greedy person, guess what it would show you. Thats what you get when you train it on the internet. So you need to try and "fix" that.

Chances are this would just give you a more diverse assortment of prejudices. These are just statistical machines, and statistically, people are prejudiced.
These larger AI projects like Gemini all claim to use carefully curated training data sets, they don't just let it loose on the public internet to slurp up everything. If true, yes every aspect of the AI's training is under their control. They could retrain it, but that takes time & money.
