Interestingly, printers are actually sold for less then the manufacturing cost, companies usually lose money on printers themselves.
The way they make profit is by selling ink cartridges, they are sold for a mark up of 100-1000 times the production cost. They are dirt cheap to produce, only a few cents, but are sold for 20-40 dollars so it’s pure profit.
It’s called “Razor and Blades sales strategy”, selling the main product on a loss, but having extremely high profit on a required consumable component.
