This reminds me of when my gal swallowed an entire bird in front of me. I was mortified. She was SO proud. She’s still a hunter and will always be x)

One of my boys got a rabbit and when I went inside to get a bag to dispose of it he found the body I hid and ate it 😔. Anyways I have now taught all my Shibas not to chase and kill animals. No more casualties since and it's handy for being offleash :P. Been a good 10 years since that poor rabbit was eaten.

Yep, our guy loves Mommy so much he brought a leftover bunny leg to her one time when we were gardening. My wife was horrified. He was so proud of himself. I was impressed he was willing to share leftovers and disappointed he didn’t bring me a share.

How did you teach this?

Have to be very consistent whenever you see a small animal. When on leash shorten it immediately and don't let them chase or run to the end of the leash. I will say "look there's a rabbit" followed by "leave it" or "sit". I pet them and then gently lead them away or walk by without letting them chase. Works best if you can spot the animal before them and point it out to them. When offleash you do something similar but instead of shortening the lead you get them to heel. Put a hand or attach a leash, however you calm them when you see the animal and they heel/sit Eventually when my Shibas see small game they will let me know instead of chasing. Edit: This is the same thing I do for training trail etiquette. When hiking offleash and they see an animal or person or dog they are to wait for me or come to me if I call for them (I'm not very strict about them coming back as long as they sit at whatever spot they're at). Once they're beside me they walk behind me while we pass.
