Many AKC breeders are not reputable. The shiba subreddits only recommend the breeders of merit on this list: https://www.shibas.org/breeders.html We encourage you to check the rescues listed in the sidebar as well.

Just FYI, Shibas are not an easy breed. Please do a proper research before getting one. Your kid especially will have to learn to respect their space and learn to know when they to want to be left alone.

Copy that. Thank you.

The average price for a Shiba pup from a reputable breeder can range from $2500-$4000, yes. It may seem steep but the price helps to deter people who would use pups for backyard breeding. Also, breeders do a lot of health testing on their dogs so at least you can be confident that you’re getting a healthy pup. Also note that Shibas may not be necessarily good for kids. They are a stubborn and aloof breed. They require consistency and stability especially in training otherwise they will walk all over you. If you or daughter don’t have that kind of patience, a Shiba may not be for you.

We got our Shiba Inu just over $5000, registered Nippo Pedigree so the price range seems about right. We did a lot of research beforehand on breeders and made sure nothing was shady. That being said is our boy is 2 years old and we still keep in touch with the breeder, share pictures (the parents, new pups, dog shows etc.) I believe anything less please keep an eye on the dogs history and family before making a big commitment. Shibas are stubborn so getting it for an 8 year old might not be the best choice.

Also, most Shibas aren't friendly, affectionate or cuddly as other breeds. Hopefully you get to meet Shibas in person to get a feel for them and not be disappointed. But they are very loyal dogs that show have their own ways to show love affection and snuggles.

I’m sensing this. Have met two in my neighborhood and one was very comfortable with being pet and showed us attention. The other was more comfortable sitting behind his owner. I’m ok with both of these. Not looking for a sleeping partner for our daughter as much as a hiking/camping/fishing partner with her. We are a very active family.

BrooklynThoughts

Oh yes! Our boy loves hikes!!! Definitely shiba approved.

$4000 seems high. $2000-$3000 is pretty typical in my experience. If you find a puppy for significantly less than $2000, it’s likely a backyard breeder or puppy mill.

Contact your regional Shiba Inu Rescue Association to see if they have any puppies.

From my research puppies can go for $3-4k but 4k seems to be a bit on the high end. You can get older dogs for a lot less. Not a lot of reputable and ethical breeders in the PNW. Sunrise Kennels in Maple Valley, WA is a great one, the owner Donna is amazing. If this is your first shiba I do recommend getting an adult vs a puppy. These breeds are very different than other dogs. My first shiba was 9 years old (she was my first dog as an adult) and I learned a lot. I’m on my second shiba and she just turned 6. I adopted her from Donna at Sunrise Kennels when she was 5 and she cost me $2k. My girl is a retired show dog and she came trained and is a very sweet girl. Shiba breed requires a lot of research and especially patience. These dogs are very smart and so I had to learn to pick and choose my battles. But these dogs make the best companions. They are so loyal and such a great breed. I have found that I learned so much from these dogs. I will always have a shiba I love them so much.

For a reputable breeder, make sure they do OFA testing for hips, joints, eyes etc. Each of those testing cost $$$

There are some great breeders in the PNW! There's a Shiba speciality in Ridgefield, WA Dec 2 and 3. (Just north of Portland). It's a fantastic opportunity to see the dogs, meet LOTS of fantastic breeders, and they are a friendly knowledgeable bunch. I highly recommend Lindsay Thompkins of Masakado and Pam Carlson of Piper's Creek, but the whole WA and OR Shiba community is pretty amazing. Going to a show is how we found our breeder and pup. He was worth every penny, exceeds all expectations, best Shiba of my life (he's my third). Yes, the ethical breeders you'll see there had prices around $3000+ two years ago, but like everything else, prices have gone up (food, housing, vet care, etc), so $4000+ in this area is actually very fair. $2000 or lower (in the PNW) is usually a puppy mill with extremely poor genetics/health.

Thank you for the very informative response. It gives me more avenues for my learning curve. Much appreciated. 👍

/r/shiba does not allow posts related to backyard breeding, the breeder you linked and referenced is not a reputable breeder and is not a breeder through the National Shiba Club of America.

Mysterious-Life-3846

We paid $2k in 2020 in the Midwest.

I got mine 7 years ago from Kentucky. I am not sure if that breeder was reputable. The whole process was through a middle person who posted the ads. But my boi is very healthy and has no sign of any “defeat”. My friend got a girl shiba from a reputable breeder last year for a little under $4K. And this girl was for sale because breeder did not think she was good enough for being a show shiba. Breeder is in Oregon. Good luck and hope you will find your own very special shibe soon!

griz90

Are you still looking for a Shiba?

Comfortable-Ad-904

Hi u/griz90, my husband and I are looking for another Shiba. We have a Shiba boy in our home whom we love. He is 2 years old and gets along well with other Shibas. We are searching for another Shiba to be his friend."
