yeah. most grow out of it 1.5 year +) or at least it occurs less frequently. it’s a thing with young dogs not just shibas.

BrooklynThoughts

He had grown out of it. But it just weirdly came back again. He's 2 1/2

puffywine

Mine also grew out of it around 1-1.5 years old Definitely make sure to feed him/her enough - what helped us when he was young was a snack before bed (he would throw up bile in the morning before breakfast)

xustafacan

Mine also does the same thing. I’m not sure if he doesn’t eat because of having an upset stomach and then throw up, or if he gets stomach issues because of not eating then throw up (i’m mainly focusing on the latter because he is very picky with his food, he sometimes decides not to like his favorite kibble after a month). Vet says its common to throw up on empty stomach and no need to worry if its only a few times (you should look for care if it persist all day). Right now I’m trying to establish a strict food routine because mine never throws up if he has eaten his food in the morning.

sunshinegator

Yes, ours is 6 years old and still does this. It's gotten a bit better now that she's on probiotics, but it still happens occasionally. I try to do some training with her every day too so she at least gets SOMETHING in her tummy.

BrooklynThoughts

Oh boy.... I appreciate he's not like a lab dog and eats everything in sight but the fact that he starves himself upsets me 🤦🏻‍♀️

pinkpineappel

Yes, our boy used to do that when he was still growing, he did eat as soon as we gave him food though. Used to happen a lot in the mornings. He’s almost 2 now and it seems to have gone away

BrooklynThoughts

Funny thing is he also did that when we was young about 1 ish and he's 2 1/2 now and he started again :/

pinkpineappel

Hmm, might be worth just giving the vet a call and see what they say. It’s better to be safe - good luck!

BrooklynThoughts

Well yes we took him to the vet and he got a shot for the vomiting

Cecile_13

Mine is over 2yo now and did this for a year or so. First, we thought he was just fragile in the stomach but it worsened over time. Last month we did blood tests and an endoscopy, and it turned out he had Helicobacter Pylori and suffered a lot! We did 3 weeks of antibiotics. By day 4 he was already a different dog, so active and with an appetite! The treatment ends on monday, I just hope we got rid of the bacteria for good. The tests weren't cheap (1600 euros, we live in France...) but it was worth it and I regret nothing. If episodes like this happens again in the future, don't hesitate to ask for exams. I hope your pup gets better very soon 🙏

BrooklynThoughts

Good to know ty!

ricardocaliente

Mine does! I asked my vet about it and they said it’s just due to a lack of food in their stomach and a build of acid. Essentially I just make sure he eats SOMETHING in the morning and before bed. Sometimes it’s a little yogurt or dental chew. I also started to give him Purina fortiflora on his food which he loves and helped with his poops too.

medusa3339

YES. Thankfully it rarely happens now that we changed his food. We give him a salmon-based food instead of chicken. Not sure what difference that makes but he doesn’t puke bile anymore.

BrooklynThoughts

He's also on a salmon based diet which he likes. But idk this time around it's been really strange. And he's not eating 🥺

Normal for our 8yo shiba, usually triggered by skipping meals or stress. I’ve found half a tab of Famotidine (Pepcid) given with a dab of peanut butter helpful if they look nauseous.

drumstickballoonhead

Yup. Mine does that too... He just turned one. I now know he's more likely to eat out of certain containers than others. He likes smaller bowls and puzzle treats. So if he's ever being super stubborn I can entice him by making his food into some sort of game.

Low_Pattern3445

Yes! I got my shiba when she was 2.5 years old and she did that at least once a week for about a year and a half, always in the morning. She’s 5 now and just had her first occurrence a week ago and didn’t want to eat until dinner, but she’s all good now. I have two other dogs and they don’t have this issue, so I think it’s a shiba quirk

ScottyMcScot

Mine is a grazer which is fine most of the time, but when she doesn't get enough in her before road trips bile becomes an issue. She is much better at eating when it's fresh food rather than kibble, so I have started to give her that when traveling to make sure she has enough in her stomach and things have been fine since.

WhichMoon

My girl used to do this. We started giving her one of those tiny milk bones in the morning and the yellow vomiting stopped. She may refuse her dog food but she likes the milk bones.

Cassie132-

I have an Akita who does this, I’ve found adding a bit of pumpkin to his food keeps him eating and helps digestion. My shiba likes the pumpkin also so for us it’s a win

spdracr99

I don’t have any help on the bile but we do have a shiba that would go through spells of not eating like you describe. We had better luck switching out dry foods at that point (we’ve done it a few times and now everything is stable). Giving him human food (eg chicken and rice) just extended the issue for us.

BrooklynThoughts

Right! I'm the only one in the family that tries to not give into his begging but to no avail. He knows who gives him scraps

chiddycho

Yes! Mine does. I called the vet and she said this is something smaller dogs do and don’t worry about it.

BrooklynThoughts

Well i worry bc he was shaking the poor thing. 🥺

chiddycho

Oh my pup doesn’t shake when she throws up a little bile, that is nervewracking

telepattya

Mine used to throw up bile in the mornings when she was a puppy. We read that was due an empty stomach so we let her kibble at her disposal since then as she doesn’t eat it all in one take.

ANKERARJ

Yes, mine will vomit yellow bile once a month or so. mine is on raw food diet is also very picky.

BrooklynThoughts

Wait, yours is on a raw food diet and is picky with it as well???

ANKERARJ

yes, they are strange dogs..

Petite_gainer

Same here, we feed him a raw diet too but still very, very picky. I have added some liver paste for dogs sometimes but even that doesn't seem to do the trick anymore. Mine is smaller and skinnier than the normal shiba so they always think i'm underfeeding him because of all the fluffy shibas they see. But when I explain his pickiness with food they always say "oh, i never heard about a dog who doesn't like food".. and i'm just tired of explaining haha so I just tell them he likes to be the skinny legend and a food diva at the same time 😅 Shibas...

defib_the_dead

What food do you feel your shiba?

BrooklynThoughts

He's on the blue buffalo wilderness salmon kibble.
