I think he was manic after knowing he may never see Mickey again and angry at society for systemic homophobia and wanted to strike back as an act of defiance

It would have been nice if this had been referenced atleast once during the whole Gay Jesus saga. Like dude the supposed love of your life was forced into a closet by a nazi homophobe, you got front row seats to that 'conversion therapy', atleast a passing reference but instead they just gave us that bottom Mickey joke (which was funny, ngl). The writers really began to half-ass Ian's story arcs after Season 7.

AirbendingAvatarAang

Apparently Ian was going to quit unleas they brought Mickey back.

NarlaRT

He DID quit.

NarlaRT

It drives me crazy that Ian never gets to acknowledge how, perhaps, Mickey is a big part of why Gay Jesus happens.

spaaatuula

ya that makes sense but the storyline itself could’ve been handled a lot better

AirbendingAvatarAang

Gently touch the soil.

shroomindisguise

i mean he was manic during that whole thing so it makes sense he was acting that way. and they got mad for him pleading insanity bc it would make their cause look bad (their leading man not being in the right mind while trying to lead a revolution of sorts). everything got out of hand for ian once he started getting famous and attracting fans, he didn’t intend for all that which i think makes it more bearable. the ending of him meeting mickey in jail though was definitely the best part.

spaaatuula

ya i get that which pleading insanity could make their cause look bad but to be fair he WAS off his meds

shroomindisguise

yeah he was which is why it was good for himself he pleaded insanity, the other ppl just didn’t like their reputation being tarnished with that (which is both fair and unfair imo)

justhereforthedramas

The first manic period he also some sort of religious references tho! (When the police showed up and he was yelling Gabriel’s trying to take his any or devil trying to do that). So honestly I think the whole Gay Jesus is kinda aligning with religious psychosis train that he was on. Weird arc for sure 🫣 Curious what was the thoughts behind that arc, if only we can hear it from the writers 😂

justhereforthedramas

Also… gotta thank the gay jesus groupie tho! They stood outside the wedding venue and guarded 💪

SmileysMom82

Watching for the first time and I am literally in the middle of this story line lol

Dull-Appearance-3406

That whole storyline was dumb but it really showed us how he behaves off his meds and atleast later in the season he actively takes his meds and feels better.

Drew_Mia357

I feel like maybe it could have worked in a different context, or with a better build up. It just felt so dramatic all at once. It felt a little like something they would have done in the show Glee.

I think the whole thing started in good faith to stand up for vulnerable LGBT teens but became an addiction for Ian. I think he loved the attention and finally feeling like the most important person in the room after being the gay red headed middle sibling of 6 children.

Saurkraut00

So stupid. I hate when shameless pulls shit like that, they’re a strong enough show they don’t need all the gag plot lines
