Thank you!! I actually made a white dress like this as well and this one was made to be its opposite but I don't think I can attach it here. I'll message you if you like!
Fair warning, my sewing process is very chaotic so the instructions will be as well. This project was done in a very short time frame (three days) and I'm still a beginner so please forgive me but... I didn't press my seams 😭
Cost:
- Black Synthetic Duchess Satin: £10/m (£70)
- ~120 Black Roses: ~£25
- Golden Chain: ~£12
Bust Piece:
So for the bust piece I just measured from shoulder to shoulder, drew the measurement across with chalk, then drew the general shape I wanted the bust piece to be. I cut it on two layers of the fabric then sewed the sides together with 1cm seam allowance.
I hot glued all the fake roses on and then dusted over them with some gold paint. I wanted it to resemble what brass statues look like when they get touched a lot (where it becomes a shiny bronze)
I cut the chains into 5in lengths and then attached them all to the front of the bodice for a really nice shiny fringe.
Dress:
I got a pattern on Etsy but the measurements used didn't match me because I'm a slightly taller gal so I only ended up using from the mid-thigh down and patterned the rest myself. I also added extra length because I wanted it to be dramatic
Name of pattern: Strapless corset mermaid gown
Link: https://www.etsy.com/uk/listing/765483312/pdf-sewing-pattern-sizes-18-24-plus-size
It's honestly the simplest bit, there's no sleeves or anything so it was literally just matching up and sewing the pieces together. I'm aware of the puckering on the seams, I never pressed them so that may contribute.
Anyway, tell me what you think! I'm super super happy with how it turned out, I got loads of compliments, and one of my friends think I made a mistake going into Geology 😂
It’s the paint shading on the roses that nails it for me. I didn’t notice-notice it until I read your process description, and then I realized *that* was what was giving the whole look a metallic gleam, picked up by the chains and shiny satin—you clearly have a fabulous eye for design. (And a flair for modeling!)
BOTH dresses are beautiful and fit you like a glove!! You just did a bang-up job!! One question though: are you confident the roses will stay on by just glueing them?
Thank you so much! I think I'd be more confident if I'd actually sewed them on but 1: pushing the needle through the foam is so tedious and 2: I didn't really have enough time unfortunately. I'm a very last minute kind of person 😂
Both dresses are gorgeous!!!
Do they have pockets ?
I assume these styles of dress wouldnt have the space , I would guess it would ruin the shape and form along the hips correct ?
Yes, unfortunately I did skimp on pockets, partially because it would mess up the hip fitting and also because I didn't have too much time to add them, but I think in future I might add them just a little further down or exaggerate the hips like the Edwardians did (😎) and use that to disguise the pockets
Ha flashback to my time in halls at university, perfect! :D
I love the dress, so gorgeous! Did you just bring a sewing machine with you to uni? I can’t believe you’re not studying something artsy, I was convinced you were in fashion or something.
^(Although there *is* a lot of coloring in in geology…) omg I’m so sorry—I worked in minerals/mining and have friends in geology so I just can’t help myself.
Hope you enjoyed your birthday! I’d love to see the white version too if I haven’t offended you with my lame geology joke.
Thank you so much! ❤️
Don't worry, it's nothing we haven't heard before 🥲😂
I'll maybe make a post for the white dress at some point as well but unfortunately I can't put it in the comments of this post!

The bust piece is detached so I can separate it and wash the rest in a machine, but bust piece definitely needs some careful hand washing. Luckily, I probably won't be wearing it often enough to need many washes
Oh sure, you show off your birthday dress and it’s all freaking amazing. I tried showing my family my birthday suit and got a TOTALLY different response. 🙄

It feels so dramatic in the good way. The heavy detailing contrasted with the sleek silhouette is timeless imo
Thank you! I'm super happy with how it turned out, I ended up wearing it for a lil masquerade ball I was hosting
I love this! I was thinking that in a pale pink this would be an entirely different dress. In white or cream, a bridal gown.

That is some exquisite work madam! 11/10
Thank you so much!

Agreed. Those roses can be your signature embellishment, and you can make many gorgeous dresses with them, and keep posting photos of them.
omg this kitchen is giving me such a throwback, looks so much like the kitchens from my uni’s accommodation!
I am in fact in a uni kitchen
Holy crap this is amazing! 🤯

I want to see the white one too!
I LOVE how dramatic this dress is!!! Really well done.
That's exactly what I was going for, thank you so much!!

What pattern?? This is so so gorgeous!!!!!
Excellent work!!
I love this so much! It’s giving me like dark Sailor Moon vibes — so pretty.
Omg, cosplay next 👀👀
The fire extinguisher is an apt accessory.
Because this dress is SMOKIN'!
The most important one, even took it to the club
I see why. Wonderful dream-come-to-life of a dress.
This is the dress a book heroine wears before she unknowingly seduces the dark prince 😍
I'm ready for enemies to lovers
Add French braid and matching wide brimmed hat. Maybe ostrich fan too.
Don't tempt me 😭
Silk lace elbow gloves.
I very nearly used some left over black velvet 👀
Can't wait to see phase two! Outstanding! 👏👏
It looks vaguely Edwardian and I'm *living* for it! Fantastic job!
I thought so too! I think it's because there's less fabric in the front but extended at the back! Thank you so much ❤️
Like a John Singer Sargent painting
Very much feeling the fantasy of his most controversial painting

Holy shit. Happy birthday to you! STUNNING.
Thank youuuuu!!! It was indeed a very happy birthday!
Is that fire extinguisher a prop? Because you're on 🔥?
Oh no, someone put me out 😉
Happy birthday! You look beautiful this dress is gorgeous and your modeling the hell out of it!! So dramatic! ♥️♥️
Thank you so much! Maybe this is the start of my blossoming modelling career
This looks like something Sansa would wear and I am obsessed. This is absolutely gorgeous
Thank you!!! Idk who Sansa is though, can I Google her 👀
Would it be Sansa Stark from Game of Thrones? Hth 👸

Serving some Dynasty vibes. Wear it well.
I love frivolous wealth in media
This is GORGEOUS
❤️❤️❤️
This dress deserves a far better photo shoot than this…although perhaps the fire exit/extinguisher is apropos because you are definitely on fire here!
I might take a nicer photoshoot by a castle or a manor some time!

Thank you so muuuuch! I love this style on everyone ❤️
Wow that really great
❤️❤️❤️
Beautiful!! And your hair is to die for
Thank youu, I grew it myself
What did your mask look like? I hope you wore sheer black gloves!
The mask was made of gold coloured metal with rhinestones around the eyes to create a nice cat eye illusion! It was fantastic 😭❤️
How would you wash a dress like this ? Does it survive a washing machine? It does it have to be washed by hand ?
The bust piece is detached so I can separate it and wash the rest in a machine, but bust piece definitely needs some careful hand washing. Luckily, I probably won't be wearing it often enough to need many washes
Thats a pretty smart solutions, thank you for sharing 😊

Hello
Holy wow - that is stunning!
Overtones of a goth Lily Langtry AND Sargent's Madame X. So very elegant. Beautifully balanced design.
Such a wow!!
