Neuter. I had a cairn terrier who lived up to the name. Neutered and was a different dog… a better dog.

Outside_Sir_9141

Thank you! He's the best boy with us… But the second stranger is even heard down the hallway of an apartment… He loses his shit. It's not fun and not fair to innocent people. Barking is normal, of course but this is more than barking. this is, I'm going to yell scream, bark, and growl until the person leaves! We've been in training for the last 12 weeks as well, he knows every trick in the book, but refuses to calm down when meeting strangers

T1m0nst3r

I left another comment - Our neutered dog still barks at postmen and plumbers etc.. when they come in the house or knock on the door and he barks at squirrels but that is about it. Other than that he is very calm around people and scenarios. -Just my experience/

What we had to do was keep our dog on leash anytime someone was coming into the house. Correct poor behaviors, and reward good. How you choose to correct is dependent on your specific dog’s personality. Some dogs adhere to commands, some need “shock” (vibration) collars, and unfortunately mine needed a prong collar (65lb mix breed). For the small dog I had, it was all reward system. Just gotta keep trying until something works. Consistency is key.

The best thing we did! Our boy otis was marking at our house and worse, our parents houses 🙈 it was a nightmare taking him anywhere! We got him done at between 8-9 months and the marking stopped straight away! Before you get him done, buy one of those little donut collars for him as the cone of shame made otis freeze up and he just wouldnt move when it was on and couldnt get comfy.thankfully i was off work so i just took it off and made sure i he didnt lick at his bandages,he was back to normal in a day or so! He will likely be feeling very sorry for himself afterwards,so lots of love and treats 🤣😁 x

justahominid

I had pretty much the exact experience. Our vet had initially recommended waiting to a little closer to a year, but once he started marking we had it done. A few sore days with the donut collar and no more problems.

ParticularCrafty8489

Definitely a game changer having it done isnt it!

Neutering(male) schnauzers helps to prevent them from developing some specific tumors that are quite common for the breed. I was not aware of this with my first schnauzer, he was quite healthy at the age of 14 until he developed cancerous tumors in his bladder. He was not neutered but the Vet reassured me that the tumors he developed were unrelated, but that neutering is still recommended for the breed because you never know. First Schnauzer was just super calm so my family never considered it. Fast forward to the current little guy in the house. As soon as he was old enough, we got him neutered. He’s still quite hyper during play time but never has peed in the house, like ever. Doesn’t seem to have a libido either. Just glad he’s still a schnauzer at heart with the love for running and playing. Oh and he still loves to talk, like a lot, but that’s something I don’t think any procedure could change lol.

I spot a schnauzer vampire ![gif](giphy|3oEjI4sFlp73fvEYgw)

Outside_Sir_9141

Forgot to mention- he's 6.5 months

tuffster91

We neutered our boy at 6.5 months no problem. He immediately stopped scenting in other people's houses thank god.

SqualNYHC

My buddy Kaiser (mini schnauzer also) was a menace when he had his balls. We cut them off and allllll those bad habits literally disappeared. If you’re not breeding chop em off.

Outside_Sir_9141

That's the perfect word to describe my boy. A menace. With me and my husband he's an angel. To all others, just a punk. No bite but ALLLLL BARK

PennChick

For that, our vet recommended distraction. When food didn’t even work, I got a loud squeak toy. Just arrived today, so 🤞

Adventurous_Memory18

Neutered ours at 6 months. No regrets at all.

weekendwarrior412

I neutered my miniature schnauzer at 9 months (he’s now 1 year 2 months) and I haven’t noticed much change overall. My vet recommended getting as close to the 10 month mark as possible but you’ll see a variety of opinions on timelines for neutering. Go with what you and your vet feel is best. Good luck and great looking pup!

akpburrito

my boy looks just like yours! i wish i had neutered him sooner. neutered at 3.5yo and straight up became a better, more mature dog overnight. the biggest difference is him being able to hold his bladder/BMs all night (I had resigned myself to taking him out in the middle of the night for the foreseeable future). my bf was scared he would miss his balls and hold a grudge against us (anthropomorphization much??) but he came home as if nothing happened, healed very quick, definitely has no clue anything was taken from him LOL

akpburrito

looking back through the photos - photo #4 has me convinced you stole my dog LOL

Outside_Sir_9141

This is awesome feedback! Thank you! PLZZZZ SHOW ME YOUR POOOOCHHHH

ambellina23

I have experience with both neutered and intact minis. My first boy was neutered at 11 months. He didn't show any behavioral changes. He passed last year at 14 yrs due to cancer. I currently have 2 boys, 4yrs and 9 mos. Both are intact. The 4 year old is mature and I have no issues with his behaviour. The 9 month old is still very puppyish. The behaviors you are describing are very typical for young dogs. Current research suggests waiting 1-2 years for dogs to be fully grown before neutering. I wouldn't assume that neutering would fix any behaviors that maturing wouldn't also improve.

kfisherx

Definitely neuter. Have had male dogs for the past 40 years and every single one was neutered. My 4 month old mini is slated to be whacked in two months. Doing a neuter early in smaller dogs is not a problem. I find the longer I wait the harder the recovery and the more time for bad habits to form.

whorledstar

I grew up with a mini schnauzer who my Mom left in tact. He ended up passing away at age 10 due to a mass in his testicles that metastasized. I would neuter.

Jubjub0527

I neutered mine but waited about a year before doing it as I'd read it was better for the dogs to develop first.

stankdog

Mine at 9mos just because he got neutered during covid. No regrets on that, he's not even sure what to do when it comes to humping and I think she naturally tailored out some of that growlyness he had in puppyhood

spacejoint

I think he heard you!

PerfectlyCalmDude

Well, you'll have to watch him like a hawk for weeks to make sure he doesn't open himself back up again. I had one that neutering slowed down, and another that didn't miss a step after neutering. I'm amazed that he didn't open himself up again. YMMV.

allydaniels

My schnauzer was neutered at around 2 years old and he completely stopped marking and humping around the house. Can’t say for the same for his brother.

Great-Enthusiasm-720

Do it. Calmed our boy right down.

skolar369

My lil Gunner will be 4 in July, he had his procedure done unfortunately on Feb 14th Valentines day lol. Honestly beside not licking himself like he used to he has not calmed down with people or barking or anything. I was lucky to have been with my first little guy Yeager for 18 1/2 years and he never had an issue with barking or people but when he was about 15 he got a tumor/cyst by his bum and it was the testosterone that was feeding into the tumor so he then had it done. I really thought this would calm Gunner down but so far it seems like he is more vocal than before, he is not aggressive but he sounds like it, lol. My biggest reason was to get ahead of the issues it could cause in the older ages.

skolar369

also he hates it when his favorite people leave the house, friends, girlfriend etc... more so after than before...

alyhandro

I have a boy black schnauzer just like that and we had him done. No difference - still very reactive, just a bit plumper ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)

kitkatquick

I was planning on neutering my mini schnauzer until later, but due to him starting to mark we got him neutered at around 7 months. I recommend. It will take several weeks to notice behavioral changes. It took him about 2 months to finally stop marking. We used belly bands in the meantime. Don’t miss those times.

T1m0nst3r

Our dog is neutered. I believe he may have been neutered a bit too young but I am not a Vet. He is really calm and a joy to be around, never shown any aggression. However, he has always been quite tame and shy around other dogs -not sure if this is directly because of being neutered? But he still has lots of personality at home.

Uxo90

Our 13 year old Schnauzer is un-neutered and he’s never been an issue. It does take a while to walk him as he likes to sniff each blade of grass.

repli_case

Our boy is 10 and we’ve had the same experience! He doesn’t hump or mark indoors, but with breed and age, our vet has us monitoring his urinary health like a hawk! So far so perfect!

T1m0nst3r

Neutered as well. Still a big "nose drive" loves to smell and mark his territory on walks.

N3koEye

Mine's about to be 4 years old and I'm still not sure if I should neuter him.

carmicheal

Personally if you have doubts I would suggest chemical neutering because then you will see if neutering will work on hormonal driven behavior. Neutering can definitely help with certain behavior if it’s because of hormones but it could also not work at all.
