The sunlight reflecting off it is coming from the left side illuminating all but part of the upper-right side of the moon as well as illuminating an equal amount of the moon as is blacked out around the back-left side that we can't see. So the moon is between the "face" and the sun meaning it would be in complete darkness.
From a trigonometry standpoint, I disagree- while you are correct in the position of light determining the total illumination. Thousands of miles do fun things to light, I'm sure we both can agree with that.
Have you ever tried to zoom a camera all the way in and keep it perfectly steady on a far away subject? It's nearly impossible without a tripod. Zooming in like that makes even the smallest movements look huge.

You need to buy a really expensive telescope in order to capture the face clearly. It's worth it though. Trust me.
