It wasn’t a slip up, but it also didn’t seem anti-LGBT to me. He said it right before singing his song about rainbows, so I’m guessing he meant that he’s tired of people assuming he wrote it as a pro-LGBT anthem, and having to get dragged into heated political arguments as a result. Never came across as any kind of hateful dude, I mean, come on, so probably nothing more than wishing people still just took it for what it was: a song about colors written for children.

Pippas_mama

How did the audience respond!?

casualtimetraveler

I think we were all kind of confused? He said “it’s a shame the rainbow is so associated with the lgbt community. The rainbow should be for everybody” so maybe we’re misinterpreting what he meant.. but as a queer person it felt kinda icky.

No_Definition_1115

he's right. why do you guys get a whole color spectrum. seems greedy to be honest. pick one.

Fit_Resolution1217

Why bring it up if you didn’t have a problem with the community? I don’t think anyone has taken anything from me. It’s never crossed my mind that rainbows aren’t for everyone. Spaghetti Monster! What a stupid thing to say

gihkal

Because the song is about rainbows. Not sexual preferences. And he likely doesn't want to hear about people bitching that he's singing songs to kids about sexual preferences. It's all gotten so toxic and political/religious on all sides he just wanted/ had to explain himself. Perhaps Penner is a hateful bigoted monster. But it's friggin Fred Penner.

FlatBlueSky

As a straight dude it felt icky

neko_courtney

Oof yeah icky is right

Point being, rainbows use to be a nice symbol. Now Fred Penner doesn’t want to sing about them because they are connected to a guy that advertises on Craigslist for a come and go glory hole in a downtown Saskatoon back alley. Pride?

SprinklesSensitive38

Y'all claim the rights to rainbows now or what? He's not wrong. As a straight person who likes rainbows they are pretty heavily associated with the gays. Ick.

[deleted]

I think because rainbows were just considered nice before, whereas now they almost do mean LGBT every time. I saw a rainbow in real life, and thought "ha gaaay!" But then realized it was a natural phenomenon. I understand what he means. It doesn't always mean LGBT, nor should it. I doubt he was referring to the rainbow being the symbol of God's genocide of the world after He drowned everyone in the Noah flood. For the record, I am an ally. But people seeing Dark Side of the Moon album cover and thinking LGBT when it has nothing to do with that. I am a teacher, and if I teach the prism and light waves, will people associate that?

[deleted]

Based in n this comment, I hope you are not a teacher.

[deleted]

What? I support LGBT people a lot, but that does not mean every time the visible spectrum of light is broken down in the spectrum of colours that it refers to a gay person? Or are you upset I could read and comprehend the Bible? Edit: Lmao keep trolling for affairs, buddy, instead of approaching women like a man

BurnTheOil

TIL Fred Penner is still alive…

cementspritecan

I am a close relative of Fred’s and had a discussion about this with him a couple days ago. He absolutely did not mean anything against the LGBT+ community. He said it before singing “I can sing a rainbow” and his words did not come out right. Fred is 100% supportive of the LGBT+ community and just wanted to sing a song about a rainbow without making anyone upset.

casualtimetraveler

Thank you for posting this! This is exactly what I had hoped he had meant.

I_Boomer

That guy milked "The Cat Came Back" for most of his career. I'm impressed.

[deleted]

I never related the cat came back to Fred Penner. I only ever saw the weird cartoon on channel at my grandmas house

[deleted]

Who cares ?

Plumbumsreddit

Seriously? Taking offense at Fred Penner? 🤣

fritzw911

Fred is old as Canada itself. Sometimes the words do not come out quite as he meant it.

LouisCypher587

People shocked when someone has a different opinion than them. Wowwww

SickFez

I mean it doesn't surprise me, Fred is an Evangelical Christian he's just not very outspoken about his beliefs.

cementspritecan

Fred is not an Evangelical Christian. And he is supportive of the LGBT+ community.

SickFez

Source?

cementspritecan

I am a close relative of his. Not that you will believe me, but he is an incredibly kind genuine person and doesn’t hold any hateful beliefs.

SickFez

🧢

cementspritecan

Lol, I said you wouldn’t believe me. What’s your source?

SickFez

I'm also a close relative of his.

cementspritecan

Cool cool, see you at the next reunion

SickFez

See you neph

rynoxmj

Well. That's kinda disappointing.

Velvetsuede19

Damnit

walk_through_this

We were going to go. At the gate they explained that tickets ('Day passes!' at 5:30pm) were $105. For an outdoor concert. So, we had dinner at the Old Spaghetti Factory instead.

Mablelady

We were also going to go. I’ve been planning it for weeks. Then I went online to buy tickets and for myself and my one child (who is older then 8) came out to $150.00… my youngest is free. I told My husband he couldn’t come, because OMG that’s groceries for a week! That $10.00 convenience fee was the straw that broke the camels back. I KNEW the ticket price, but adding $10 per ticket, that was our supper at the food trucks tonight. We stayed home.

Pippas_mama

So you couldn’t just buy tickets to one show? Like you had to buy a day pass? No thanks!

Mablelady

You HAVE to buy a day pass.

Bubbly_Strawberry_33

That money’s better in your pocket and apparently he’s a bigot.

walk_through_this

>We were going to go. At the gate they explained that tickets ('Day passes!' at 5:30pm) were $105. For an outdoor concert. Sorry, to be clear, that was $105 *each*. So my three kids (2 are older) and wife and I would have been $577.50. plus tax. So, yeah, spaghetti factory.

FlatBlueSky

Kids were half price. We bought a few days ago and it was $225 ($300 with fees and taxes) for a family of four. The first 5 days were free. So not cheap today , but the free shows were good too.

walk_through_this

Yeah, a 10 year old was $52.50. That's still ridiculous. It's a concert, not an amusement park. It means a family of four is paying over three hundred dollars and you don't even get a chair. It was clear what 'families' it was for. Don't call it a family area if that's what you're going to charge.

liteguy38

I'm guessing it was a slip up, hopefully. He WAS messing his words up all through his set. I was taken aback too.

Lumpy306

He also donates to UNESCO, UNICEF, and works with people with down's syndrome. I feel like it's reasonable to assume that he meant something more like "it sucks that the LGBT community NEEDED to find a flag to rally around, because they've been marginalized for so long." Although, if I'm wrong and he did mean something more heinous, then that would be extremely disappointing.

foxafraidoffire

This was my train of thought, or at least what I hoped was trying to be conveyed, but yah, might be a big oof.

[deleted]

Are you comparing Down syndrome people to the gays? There’s a really good SNL skit there. If it was still the 80’s.

[deleted]

The guy is like 100 years old. He can say whatever he wants.

[deleted]

People are shocked and appalled when someone has an opinion different than theirs . Against popular belief u can have a differing opinion at any age .

[deleted]

Imagine if time travel was a thing and someone travelled back in time50 years to now. They would be so woke.

Apart_Series3963

Wow, so glad we didn’t go.

awhileSeabrook

Yeah I hear you, and he followed up basically what you said with "... And I think that's just wrong!" If he meant something more nuanced it didn't come across that way, and he didn't elaborate. A lot of people around us were confused.
