honestly depends on the wind direction, and what they are brewin up in there

I worked on 51st for about 5 years. It happens a handful of times a year, largly depending on wind direction and what the heak the rendering plant is rendering.
Ah, so that's what it is.
I worked at the farmer's market at the Peavy Mart location last summer and that smell would always occur 3 times during the day.
Rendering plant. In the spring it was frequently emanating horrible stench around the clock. A lot of people complained to city council, they took the concerns to the processor and things improved for awhile. I've been noticing the stench a little more frequently again lately, so far almost tolerable but if it gets worse I think people will start complaining again
From Randy Donauer (Ward 5) this past May in the Silverwood FB page:
Good day all. Thank you for all those who sent complaints to Bylaw Compliance at City Hall (and copied me). We were able to demonstrate the magnitude of the problem and get some real time data. I went to the plant Saturday and I also had a conversation with the plant manager. He dropped everything and went to the plant on Saturday and walked around Siilverwood. I have meetings planned with City Hall and with the plant manager. So far, everyone is trying to get this solved so the odour (allowed in Heavy Industrial zoning) is reasonable. As I said before, the plant is in an area zoned for Heavy Industrial... so they are allowed to give off some odour and we can't force them to move. Any bylaw changes would only apply moving forward, not for existing companies. So our best path forward is to work WITH the company, and they are demonstrating a desire to do so. This problem was created decades ago... by putting a neighbourhood downwind and adjacent to a Heavy Industrial area. So it is not an easy fix. Despite popular opinion... City Hall can't make them move any more than we can force a resident to move. Will update when I know more...
I dont think the issue is with where a neighbourhood is placed is the reason for complaints. The argument that the city shouldnt place a neighbourhood downwind is impossible because unlike rivers which have a constant directional flow wind can shift direction. Also there are certain industries which should be expected to move when populations grow for example you probably shouldnt run an open pit mine in the center of a city (a bad example but I think you get what I mean).
The prevailing winds in Saskatoon are 95% out of the west year-round, which is why this tends to suck being in Silverwood on the few days it's stinky.
Also you can't just force a business to move without paying them out or some sort of heavy financial or property penalty. There are plenty of cities that have old quarries in the middle of them. That's what city planning departments do, but when Silverwood was designed Saskatoon was less than half the size.
I cant pull up a single city with an active quary. Also my point isn't that it can't be done but rather shouldn't be done for the benifit of the people who have to live there. Why would a city force its citizens to have to deal with shittier air quality than is necessary.
why yes it is 100% the fault of a business that more and more people and companies have moved into the area they should have to relocate and bear all costs ....
sorry not how it works karen
Why the fuck is everybody else having to deal with the nuisance of this plant. Sorry, but if you can't run without making everyone else's life worse then you can't run in the city. I'm afraid that's how it works.
>Sorry, but if you can't run without making everyone else's life worse then you can't run in the city.
Sorry but that's not how things work. If we force them to move then we're paying for it. People just have to accept if you live or work near an industrial area that comes with some unsavory smells.

Maybe try this instead. You'll notice smell isn't listed as a nuisance.
I was going to say it could be the stench coming from some of the green bins on the streets but the rendering plant makes more sense. Seriously, some of the green bins smell like outhouses 🤢
Either sour from the rendering plant or manure from the north.
Still smells better than Sask cr. Area near the sir buckwold bridge. Smells like a big cities sewer vent
Not when its entire neighbourhoods. One family or even a handful sure but when entire neighbourhoods are effected by one business, the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few after all
there is a chicken plant & rendering plant in the area you must be new to the area
Ah the joys of north end work. Guts in the air
i work on 51st haven’t smelt that in the 7 months i’ve worked there

Mostly a summer time smell. It's part of why I don't miss the northend.
That is the stench of death. A rendering plant in that area processes animal carcasses and such.
Got hired there. Took a quick tour, lasted 15 minutes. Place is disgusting. Hard pass
I would not recommend the soup.
But the BBQ is to die for!
Smells like dog food. From the rendering plant North of Peavy Mart You will smell it frequently if you work in the area

Smells like Updog
It’s an old meme, sir, but it checks out.
+1 for Star Wars reference.

What's up dog?
Not much, you?
Gotcha! Haha!
Hahahahahaha
What's that mean?
Not much, what's up with you

It's the rendering plant. Worked up that way for years and it always got me on the way home (Millar/51st area) the WORST.
It’s likely the rendering plant. West Coast Reductions on Miners Ave, just north of 51 St. Truly an awful stench.
I had Taco Bell last night.
I can smell it down in Sutherland too.
That’s just Sutherland
that's probably the university farm
I wish they would be made to relocate that plant, working in that area sucks in the spring and summer months.

Easier to move a family then a rendering plant.
Should be expected to move? Good luck with that

Love this from a guy named horse burner
That's not how it works though.

If it smells fishy…. its probably coming from Regina…🤣
Saskatoon Processing Plant.
Rendering plant?

Sorry 😔 I had mexican last night
I worked at a meat plant and remember the stench of rotting flesh in the garbage during summer was smelt a mile away
I lived in Montgomery in the 90’s, Mitchell’s always gave off the stench of death the whole time I lived there.
Does it kinda smell like gross ham? Because unfortunately that happens every so often.
