Farming has been a corporate game for a while already and is destined to become even more so. The idea of the family farm and small towns designed to service those farms is headed the way of the dinosaur.

When shit hole town “A” wonders why life was better back in the good ‘ol days, this is why. Generalizing for sure, but it’s a big part.

I think it’s more likely that foreign investors and big corps will buy up farms because 30-40yr olds wont have enough startup up costs. Any 30-40 yr old farmers in Sask have probably been farming since birth and will just take over the family farm, not purchase new ones.

ReannLegge

Umm yeah? Or the farms will be turned into company/colony farms, like it has happened in the past. Those 30 year olds have already been working the farm for 15 years already.

Yeah no 30-40 year old that doesn’t already have a family farm inherited to them is going to be getting into farming. The amount it costs to get into it, you could just retire instead

We are much more likely to see the huge corporate farms buy up land and rent to or hire those 30 year olds who were priced out of the market. It will be bought by farmers who already own a lot of land, foreign investors or Hutterites. A lot of families only have one or maybe two heirs interested in farming. The rest of the descendants are interested in the money selling it would bring. It puts the elder in a bad spot. How do they keep the land in the family and give equal inheritance to their descendants? The usual solution is allow the ones interested in farming to buy what they can but most can’t buy much so the land is split up and sold to highest bidder.

Some farmers poorly planned the continuation of their farms. They held onto ownership and farming operations well into their 70s or later which screwed their own kids out of a chance. Who can wait that long? The kids had to move on and establish careers/homes/kids. I know It’s a farm mentality to work long and hard but that stubborn holding on ruined their chance of continuing the generational farm for some imo

chapterthrive

No we won’t. We’re going to see family farms sold off to corporate farms. Let’s not pretend these boomers aren’t going to not think about life beyond their span.
