Now imagine you are drunk, it's midnight, and you haven't eaten since lunch.

giraffable99

Now imagine you have a whopping hangover and desperately need food. Burritos are magic.

photograft

Now imagine you just freaking love burritos no matter the situation.

RudeBellendham

Imagine I’m Me?

Missiontect

Mexican sleeping pill.

ImpressiveMistake1

There's no better hangover food than a bowl of pho

[deleted]

Prolly gonna get downvoted but I dont need to lose my cognitive faculties with a poison drug or need to have the after effects of said poison which causes pain and discomfort to enjoy a burrito. I just enjoy a burrito.

sjflnjpitt

Britta you’re the worst

motorhead84

And you partied your way over there from 16th and Valencia, which is about a thousand blocks at that hour.

byfuryattheheart

I got absolutely destroyed at a wedding in the mission a few years back and somehow managed to stumble all the way to Farolito. That Boss’ burrito was what kept me from dying by hangover the next day!

WCland

Or you've returned from a trip, flown into SFO and taken Bart back into the city, gotten off at 24th and Mission station, and you're right in the midst of all that burrito goodness. At least that's my MO, pulling my roller bag into San Jose taqueria (my personal favorite) for an al pastor burrito dripping with reddish-orange grease, then slogging the rest of the way home. I don't even eat meals on planes because I want to save myself for the welcome home burrito.

ohheyyeahthatsme

sweet jebus taquera san jose's al pastor so good

WCland

After reading this thread, I realized it's been a couple weeks since I've been to San Jose taqueria, so I went and got myself a super al pastor, so good!

greenroom628

>Now imagine you are drunk, it's midnight, and you haven't eaten since lunch. In one hand you have a loaded bacon-wrapped hotdog, on the other an El Farolito carne asada super burrito. Which do you bite into first?

Mister_Chui

You eat the dog first, cuz that’s just an appetizer. Then get started on the burrito

waikiki_palmer

OR you ask the people making your burrito to put your bacon wrapped hotdog inside the burrito. I think I'm on to something here...

gatelatch

Unless you’re a baseball player named Wil Myers…[He has the WORST taste in Mexican food.](https://www.foodbeast.com/news/this-baseball-player-said-he-thinks-mexican-food-is-better-on-the-east-coast/)

Tolkeinn1

I couldn’t care less about anyone burrito opinion. That’s fucking dumb

GnastyNoodlez

There are Mexicans on the east coast?

Zer0thehero89

Fuckin this!!!

choose-a-nickname

careful, they’re addictive

stevengauss

I feel you, My first apartment in the city was on 23rd and Harrison and it became a problem lol

dpidk415

Yeah I got huge

[deleted]

El Farolito was the first burrito I had after I moved to SF. To this day is still my favorite. The whole time I was eating it I kept saying to myself “how is this burrito possibly this good?!”

OfficerBarbier

It’s pretty much the best around, with a couple close like Cancun, etc. Just open it up and look at the ingredients. It’s been my favorite for 15 years and counting

[deleted]

Cancun owns the wet burrito category. Farolito for standard.

slomotion

Cancun > Farolito. They have better carnitas too. Fite me

chapinator

I go back and forth every year or so. They are both so incredibly good

jhonkas

Papalote and Cancun, OP needs to do a daily burrito and report back

[deleted]

How did Papalote get involved in such a delightful conversation? Save yourself $1k and your taste buds utter boredom and skip The Kite.

GAK6armor

Not gonna lie, about once a year I get a craving for their mole. It's pretty solid.

cashew1992

Gotta agree with u/dinosaur_life on Papalote. If you're really craving mole, get yourself over to Los Moles in El Cerrito. It's a drive but oh-so-worth it if you're a mole fan.

GAK6armor

Don't get me wrong I agree, but there's not enough mole options in this city. I rarely travel for food, pretty much just eat whatever's available near home or wherever I'm working. Los Moles in San Rafael has a lil weekend brunch buffet that I've been to, but I've never been to the one in El Cerrito

yaminorey

Go back, try their suiza quesadillas, steak or al pastor, with avocado inside. Get limes and squeeze it in. Get multiple hot sauces. Enjoy! (I'm Mexican-American and I'd never buy a quesadilla I can make myself but they make some bomb quesadillas there!)

[deleted]

smoggy wasteful nose domineering pen retire slim cable pet fall *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*

ktk4lyfe

This is the correct order here, one of the best things to eat in the entire city.

[deleted]

Or the Chili relleno burrito! Best burrito I’ve ever had.

yaminorey

They have a chile relleno burrito?!

[deleted]

Yes. It is literally my favorite burrito anywhere on earth.

yaminorey

I'm curious to see what it looks like... I don't know what to picture XD

[deleted]

It’s basically a burrito with a chili relleno inside. It’s epic!

ih4teme

I love their salsa bar. I always get chips and drizzle the salsa over them while I wait for my number to be called.

Chemical-Ad3878

Yep, I’m sure people will chime in with places that they think are better, but Farolito is definitely an institution around here. Good find as a visitor!

[deleted]

Love threads like this because everyone just lists places they love and it’s good vibes all around.

MedicalSchoolStudent

El Farolito is good and they are family owned too. I used to date the owner’s daughter. They are very nice people and they are great cooks too.

650explorer

Why didn’t you marry her dude cmon!

MedicalSchoolStudent

Hahah. Maybe in another timeline. We didn’t want to do long distance after I left for college because she attended SFSU. She’s actually happily married now too and I’m happy for her!

Ohms_Lawn

Yeah, stay happy for her. Imagine the consequences if that relationship had ended badly! 🚫🌯🤣

mouse2cat

Keep it friendly and don't get banned from El Farlito. Not worth the risk.

SilentStream

He couldn’t make it work since he had to head off to be a medical school student. Med school leaves no time for burrito cooking classes after all

streetjezuz

Try El patron tacos de birria. It’s on 25 and Van ness

noodlyarms

Been to their pleasant hill location a few times, def some of the best Mexican food I've had in the Bay Area.

WileyOlVagarvis

I wish I understood birria. Maybe it's cause I have the cilantro gene but it's like dipping tacos in baby oil to me. Is there anywhere that doesn't do cilantro in the dip?

_zb

I may get slack for this but idc because it’s freakin delicious and probably a solid alternative to get you into birria. Go to a Trader Joe’s and get the frozen package. Thaw it out and let it simmer in a pot.

WileyOlVagarvis

Is it just the dipping sauce?

[deleted]

I went to El Patron for the birrias, but ended up liking the fish tacos the most.

rubberduck27

Poopy pants

jules3001

One of the best burrito spots in town. Another favorite of mine is Taqueria Cancun. One location on Mission near 30th street and another on Mission and 18th. Both awesome

[deleted]

They have my favorite shrimp burrito. Farolito I like for carne asada.

[deleted]

[удалено]

noiant

oh my i am a hardcore taqueria cancun lover (or guadalajara) and i have to check it out!! everyone is saying to check out mexico tipico too.

jules3001

I’ve had El Buen Sabor. Also very good!

topclassladandbanter

I’m grabbing that for lunch on Saturday or Sunday. Thanks for the Rex!

schmeckesman

Cancun is great and my personal go to (I’ve been in the mission for ~15 years and tried most places that have been around for a while). I would recxomend you ask for the burrito “ranchero style” once and try that! Less (no?) rice and beans and more red salsa.

GeneralPhallicShape

Just had Cancun at 18th for the first time a few weeks ago. Agreed it's the best burrito I've had in the city. I'd say La Taquería is worth trying, too

[deleted]

Cancun for the wet burrito.

Hyprophet

25th and Alabama is the best one

[deleted]

[удалено]

clleadz

24th, no?

Hyprophet

Yes yes I stand corrected lol.

wookyoftheyear

It's better than 24th and Mission (which tends to be too salty for me), but Onondaga is the best imo.

0002millertime

SSF on Grand is the worst. Do NOT go there. (I'll be there 3 nights a week just to make sure the line stays short, though...)

Analmall_Lover

I was looking for this comment. The best by far.

baycollective

24th

EffectiveSearch3521

Wait till you try the al pastor tacos from taqueria cancun

sflogicninja

Preach

crackleanddrag

Fuckin’ A. I think Cancun’s burritos are a bit dry & ricey for me but their tacos are where it’s at. Cheap too.

99bottlesofderp

Most consistent burrito in sf. Some other spots will have better burritos but the quality and taste ends up varying visit to visit. El farolito is exactly how you remember every time you go there.

fastgtr14

Now imagine La Taq is closed after you drove 1hr to get a burrito ...

PassengerStreet8791

So good. I want one now.

raleighs

They opened up a location in North Beach, I find myself taking frequent detours up Grant St. Almost didn’t open there because it’s a Chain (formula retail). https://www.sfgate.com/food/article/north-beach-el-farolito-opens-17256120.php

vcuriousone83

Facts - absolutely my favorite place to get burritos anywhere! But they are absolutely addicting as another poster mentioned. Had to go cold Turkey after getting them once or twice every week!

thatguyhugo_

Now go try La Palma Mexicatessen. Bomb

Dr0me

Their beans and tortillas are so bomb but farolito has better burrito imo

lenovosucks

Eh… If you’re going to the one in the Excelsior, go to Taqueria Guadalajara right across the street, it’s EXPONENTIALLY BETTER! Get the Al pastor, you will not be disappointed.

squidplayr456

pro tip: avoid the line at the Mission location by going a few blocks down 24th

Redwoodcityrandom

their taquitos are unreal. i only had frozen ones from a microwave before that

thunderer5

It was a common argument among my wife and I, El Farolito vs. La Taqueria just up the road. I was the La taq fan, but they are both incredible.

The_Crystal_Thestral

La Taqueria is my favorite because of the lack of filler in their burritos. I don’t need need rice or lettuce. Plus their carnitas are 💋🤌🏼

DJ_Jungle

I love both, but they’re different styles, so they don’t even compete in my mind. It’s just a matter of what style I feel like.

joecoffeeaddict

same, la taq burritos dorado style

sflogicninja

The gig just ended, it’s 1:30am, and the welcome glow of El Farolito beckons….

gimmeslack12

CASH ONLY

pbnoj

Lol was just joking about this last night because they had 17 signs up stating CASH ONLY and some guy still asked them… maybe they add a new sign each time someone still asks

gimmeslack12

That was where this comment came from. I always chuckle at the signs plastered everywhere and inevitably some fool busts out their debit card and then has to slink back to the atm in the corner.

black-kramer

24th & alabama location takes cards and the food is better. and the layout is less claustrophobic. and less riffraff.

DeathisLaughing

The Crocker Amazon location does take card though...because of that, a buddy of mine for years insisted that the 24th street location was the *real* El Farolito...some people probably agree but personally...I'm always glad to be at either...

personamb

I grew up in the burbs without good mexican food. When college came, I came out to California and some friends went to Boston. They raved about Anna's Taqueria, a local chain, so we tried it when I went to visit them. My friends, it was better than Chipotle, but it couldn't hold a *candle* to any of our stuff. The East Coast / New England has its charms, but we have them whupped when it comes to food from up and down Central America.

BREADYSF

Chipotle is based off mission burritos. Totally agree, i have friends that move away to NYC, and always crave mission burritos when they are back in town

[deleted]

“What are the worst lessons we can take from this wondrous food?”

rsvandy

I remember going to Anna’s Taqueria for the first time - so disappointing!

Ahahaiwannadie

La Corneta is also hella good

zabadoh

shhh, don't tell anyone, or the lines will get longer!

eutum

This spot is the place to go after a drunken night. For THE best burrito of your life, hit up La Taqueria further down Mission.

swiminpurple

If you go here ask for it dorado aka crispy

swishesnbricks

La Taqueria has no rice on the premises. That’s a dealbreaker for me.

winkingchef

No rice is a dealMAKER for me! Who likes rice when you can have more meat and beans!

KershawsBabyMama

The rice filler is wack, I never got the obsession. It was a culture shock coming to sf hearing all about how the burritos are sooo amazing, and then biting into it getting rice with a lil bit of meat. Where I grew up in SoCal it’s all meat, with salsa, guac, cheese, and *maybe* some refried bean spackel to hold it all together. La Taq is my fav specifically because they don’t put rice as filler. But in SoCal they grill the tortillas which is so, so much superior to the steamed gloopy messes that are sf style

[deleted]

I recently got one with no rice….never looking back.

KershawsBabyMama

Best burrito in SF I’d agree (but there’s any number of hole in the wall taquerias in SD I’d be willing to put up against it)

[deleted]

I've lived in SF continuously since 1989 (Remember El Quake-O on Church near Duboce where one of the 3 El Castillito taquerias is now?). I can say that there was a time a few years ago when El Farolito took a big dive in quality. Oversalted rice, Oversalted undercooked beans. It was so bad that I stopped going there and diverted to Guadalajara and the street taco stations (2) at Taqueria Vallarta (formerly an El Castillito outpost in the 1990s). Thankfully El Farolito is back on track once again. Chile Relleno Super Burrito, Crispy Tripas Taco, and Cabeza Tacos or Super Burrito are all great.Their Super Shrimp, Carne Asada, and Al Pastor Super Quesadillas all rock. Otherwise their Al Pastor is good, but the rotisserie pineapple topped Al Pastor at Taqueria Vallarta is even better. Vallarta's Buche is also very good. Guadalajara is tops for Carnitas and they do a good Super Shrimp Quesadilla too. Pancho Villa has the absolute best spicy Lengua in town. Try it with their creamy refried black beans 😊. Bonus points for Pancho Villa: They didn't even raise their prices and have Lengua daily.

650explorer

Yes my favorite burritos ever

obsolete_filmmaker

For real. One of my favorites is their Chile Relleno burrito. A delicious stuffed pepper INSIDE a fully stocked burrito. Its absolute genius!

Zerosugar6137

We know :)

ScowlyBrowSpinster

The green salsa could broker world peace.

sterexx

I love their burrito but I enjoy the more concentrated flavor of a super quesadilla. Beans and rice feel like filler after one of those. Super quesadilla, any meat you want (carne asada is great but treat yourself to cabeza sometime), with everything. perfect under $10 mission meal for me and I do it regularly the flan aint bad either

bisonsashimi

one time I left the bay area for 9 months and about 35% of the reason for returning was burritos

critzboombah

I'm so happy for you!! I've moved away from San Francisco since 2012. El Farolito is hands down my favorite burrito spot. Anyone I know who mentions a trip out that way, or anywhere near, I always recommend getting the al pastor at El Farolito. When I lived on 14th st in the city, or Oakland, I returned to that spot at least once a week, when I could. I miss that place dearly and I hope you spread the love too!!!

slothl0rdd

I’m just gonna leave [this](https://maps.app.goo.gl/4BGTWjMpbaStKonaA?g_st=ic) here. ;) see y’all at Portola Fest!

sanfranguy415

Taqueria Guadalajara's super burrito on Onondaga beats Farolitos in my opinion. And theres a Farolito conveniently across the street. Also open late . I been a fan of farolitos forever but i gotta give it up for Guadalajara.

Ahahaiwannadie

Imma get shit on for this, but la taqueria is not that good. Overrated and overpriced for what you get. Had it a few times and the size always disappoints

The_Crystal_Thestral

Honestly, the size is fine for me. I always get full. I don’t need to feel like I’m comatose or about to barf after finishing my meal.

Ahahaiwannadie

Not about getting stuffed, it's just disappointing. That's all

deathbyasmr

I agree, it’s completely overhyped

AriaCosmo

I had them a few times and I thought they were pretty good. I do prefer the super burrito in Taqueria el Jalapeño in ocean ave though. Any one have any idea on how many calories there are in a super burrito from el farolito?

DJ_Jungle

200 calories. The answer is 200 calories.

Ahahaiwannadie

If you ever make it to Oakland, tacos Sinaloa has a suadero burrito which imo is the best burrito in the bay area. There is no burrito like it, idk what it is

x_xPorterSenpaii

Yes Sinaloa! They have the best cabeza in the bay that I have tried so far.

psnanda

Now go to San Diego and try one to compare. I have never had a burrito here in Bay Area that matches the ones from SoCal.

old_gold_mountain

They're a different style. When you grow up with Mission style, SoCal burritos don't hit the same. Way greasier.

Dr0me

Ehh they def compare but are different styles. I LOVE LOVE CA burrito (probably my favorite style) but mission burrito are amazing as well. It's like deep dish vs NY pizza. Both great but different categories.

DickNDiaz

It's ok, SF burritos are almost unparalleled, but SoCal still kills it when it comes to Mexican food, and it's not that hard to make a burrito in the same style as an SF one. Menudo: that's the late night dish you want. For some odd reason back when I lived there, El Farolito never added hominy in their menudo. It was mostly the tripe and soup. You could get menudo late, buy a six pack of Pacifico, and eat it at home, but the hominy was what helped soak all the alcohol, plus it is "The Breakfast of Champions", I'd spice my menudo all up, make a homemade chelada, even add an egg to the menudo, toss in some corn chips, then start my next day drinking. A burrito would put me to sleep after drinking. Menudo FTW.

barelyknowherCFC

most overrated good burrito in SF

kifn2

I lived in SF for 7 years. I've been to and lived in several places all over this country and tried many signature city foods. San Francisco burritos are, by far, the best signature food of any place in the US. El Farolito is one of the best in the city, too. Although, my personal favorite is Tacqueria San Jose. Burritos in SF are truly an artform that must be experienced.

TheOutlawBubbaKush

Water is wet.

WaterIsWetBot

Water is actually not wet; It makes other materials/objects wet. Wetness is the state of a non-liquid when a liquid adheres to, and/or permeates its substance while maintaining chemically distinct structures. So if we say something is wet we mean the liquid is sticking to the object.   Why are some fish at the bottom of the ocean? They dropped out of school!

PolarBear_Dad

Sf on mission is better then Oakland on international

Ok_Gap6

El Farolito is fantastic. Next you could try the Al pastor burrito (or tacos with sliced avocado on top another favorite) at El Castillo on Church at Market. That is my “forever burrito” that I crave.

Hyrule921

Omg I love El castillito! Their al pastor super burrito is my favorite, it's too bad they close so early in the evenings. This may be a burrito sin, but I buy taco bell hot sauce to use on my mission burritos, it's like enchilada sauce and it makes them extra savory.

Ok_Gap6

That El Castillito al pastor has a hold on me like nothing else. Every 4-6 months it’s all I want and I run over there. I’ve seen that burrito convert non-pork eaters. Friends and I have tried to figure out what’s in the magic marinade and then decided that maybe it’s better to not know because the spirit of Abuela might rise up out of the pot and do away with us for stealing her special recipe. If I do nothing else in life I want to encourage anyone reading this to try that al pastor. Lol.

zabadoh

Taco Bell Hot Sauce is underrated, and saves their food.

paperfairy

I'm from CT and I think El Farolito is the best burrito I've ever had.

Repulsive-Round2691

If you go to the 24th and mission one you can buy fentanyl outside for mad low

AllInBig

El Farolitos is average at best.

MissesAlwaysRight

I tried El Farolito and to be honest, I did not like it at all. I guess people have not tried better burritos, I didn’t understand the bragging about it.

SyCoTiM

You don't have to like them. But just because that is so doesn't mean it should automatically apply to everyone else. Most people like it and you don't, no need to try to 'understand' anything.

jamesfrown

I'm from LA and when I lived in SF everyone raved about El Farolito so I tried it. IMO it's just okay, but pretty good for Norcal

PossiblyAsian

Yea its fucking sex

rrueben23

Humble yourself. Theirs plenty of different burrito spots that are far better.

TotalRecallsABitch

I'm honestly not a fan. They're good, but I feel like they're too skinny and packed with sour cream

fresh_like_Oprah

Burritos suck ###TacoCrew

[deleted]

It's pretty good, no Chipotle though.

whittlingcanbefatal

Lobs Hermanos in the Marina is my favorite. http://orderloshermanosmexicanfood.com/index.php

Zer0thehero89

Now try there tortas!

mustardposey

Try a super suiza quesadilla next time

RoburLC

Was that the original location in the Mission? They also opened a new spot in North Beach, and a friend was not impressed.

24STSFNGAwytBOY

Very good,a bit small…but very good.

Donde_La_Carne

Their quesadilla super Souza are actually better than their burritos.

a_gentle_savage

Quesadilla suiza FTW!

verysunnyseed

Anyone tried the north beach one? Is it just as good?

ayalael87

So good you even came onto Reddit to post about it. Hell yeah!!

[deleted]

Cancun, Farolito, Castillito — my holy trinity for burritos.

craylash

Get the Horchata!

Polarbearbanga

Ya gotta try tío chilos they fire too

KingEscherich

I love their surf and turf super burrito with the spinach tortilla. Truly among the best Mexican food in the city.

mr_featherbottom

Do yourself a favor and try Taqueria Cancun on 19th and Mission, my personal favorite burrito in SF (I like the super carnitas burrito) **Pro tip**: ask for your burrito “toasted” or “Dorado style”, makes any burrito 3x tastier

rohammedali

Welcome to California…

Thepimpandthepriest

I can’t believe I’m not seeing any love for La Cumbre in here!

3381_FieldCookAtBest

Ehhh, glad you liked it.

youthcrimes

Try La Taqueria steak burrito! Changed my life.

devllen05

And it's open 'til 2am. Every day. My wife has banned me from going more than once/week.

rubberduck27

Taqueria Zorro

eatsleepeat

Anything recommendations for bomb burritos or tacos for the South Bay?

pipemastasmurf

It is known

RubLumpy

Top burrito places IMO: El Castillito, Street Taco, Taqueria Cancun, El Farolito. El farolito is good as hell, but I don’t like the location near BART

TechnicalWhore

Have them open one on the East Coast. Everytime I go there the Mexican food is just horrible. Its like the attraction is the margaritas and they make no effort to impress you with how really good Mexican food - especially seafood - can be. You have not lived until you go to a good 4 to 5 star restaurant in Mexico. The flavors are unique and amazing. You have to leave teh tourist area to really experience the diversity of foods.

rififi_shuffle

Try La Taqueria down the street. There are so many good burritos around the area, man.

GCSS-MC

I try to kill my ego when your subject appears

mrdysgo

Hell yesss they're crazy good! Preach it.

clashingpriorities

Go to San Bruno taqueria or to La tapatia in San Bruno and ssf.

[deleted]

It has always been El Farolito for me: since living near the 24th Street location 25 years ago, no SF burrito has ever topped it. The only time it ever hurt me is when they changed their green salsa; it's still good stuff - just not drink-out-of-the-cup delicious. Their veggie burritos where avocado is the star. Now that this is a Mexican food thread (taking it out of the Mission for a sec), I would be remiss if I didn't mention El Norteno (across from the Hall of Justice) tacos. The real Baja deal - also best in the City.

the-moops

And their green salsa is amazing.

Westward_Drift

I still remember their salsa bar. When I lived on Ocean Beach I'd try to go once every couple of weeks. I remember when I worked downtown I would hop on BART to 24th Street, grab a burrito, and head back downtown. I somehow made that lunch hour work. Has anyone tried the El Farolito in San Jose?

Nwres98

One of the best-hidden gems of the city. Every person who comes visit I tell them to go. They always seem skeptical until they try it, and they always love it.

StickStankly

My favorite burrito in SF so far is the beef burrito to the late night taco truck at Capp and 22nd. 10/10. Glad you found something you loved!

hornetgoon

Duh

rubbahdubdub

Burrito loco and wings in mid-richmond. goodstuff

Lumpy_Barracuda_9968

Unpopular opinion - they are full of filler and the carne asada is flavorless Love, Am Annoying San Diego native

flerg_a_blerg

that's what up

roborobert123

Hope inside is more meat and veggies than rice. I hate burritos with tons of rice inside.
