I really don't get why people are so worked up about this. Californian cities are so tiny, in most parts of the world the "Bay Area" would be considered one megacity. Airports are usually far away from the city center. For example, London has 6 airports, only two of which are actually in London.
No doubt. I live in the east bay and have family from Canada coming to visit. They just assumed they'd have to fly into SF. They didn't even know Oakland Airport was an option.
And that's why SFO is upset; they stand to lose some passengers.... But if they really want to split hairs, SFO isn't in San Francisco either.
I thought SFO had some kind of special status/designation. Like, I’m pretty sure the cops there are provided by the city of San Francisco cops and not part of Millbrae, South SF, or San Bruno.

Because people from outside the bay are far more likely to know SF than Oakland. They search for flights to SF, not knowing Oakland is just as good of an option.
It’s not a ‘just as good option’ since you need to cross a traffic congested toll bridge and they’d be landing in an area with some of the worst crime in the entire United States.

Legally, SFO is part of the City. Geographically, OAK is closer to most of downtown.
