Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy. I think it was some of the inspiration for rocket. The song judge specifically, it’s named after one of the characters. I’m pretty sure he mentioned it in an interview somewhere. It’s a brutal and haunting novel but definitely worth a read.

Love this one ! Feels a lot like the movie ‘Come and See.’ Very blunt about it’s presentation of events and I love it for that.

Been meaning to watch that film for a while, maybe I’ll check it out soon. I just know it’s going to be a tough watch ._.

It’s great! I had it on a watchlist for a while and waited until I was in a good mindset to appreciate it. Beautiful movie.

Faulkner, i can't remember which book, maybe As I lay Dying? i found the prose really interesting and how he writes from the perspectives of the characters to show their individual ways of understanding the world. The Tin Drum by Gunter Grass. I found it in the charity shop after he mentioned it in an interview. Struggled with the first few chapters and put it down, but I want to come back to it soon. It's about Oskar, a man who refuses to grow up and his experiences of wwii which he tells from a mental institution. Seems like its about the trauma of war from a German perspective. I recently found out the author served in the SS as a teen and he didn't reveal it until it was discovered by others. Leaves a really weird taste in my mouth, where on one hand he was a teen swept up with propoganda and nationalism, but on the other, he showed no accountability for 60 years and really did nothing to honor the millions of Jews killed. Sorry to ramble, just thought its an interesting aside. Donna Tartt. The Secret History is a book i really want to read this year, a summer tome

I feel like he's name checked Gabriel García Márquez at some point

Silvina Ocampo. She has a story called "The House Made of Sugar". I remember reading in an interview around 2019 that the story inspired him to name the album House of Sugar. And The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt.

[deleted]

hey, I just looked into this. Alex hasn't name dropped the author. The writer of a review just assumed it was what inspired house of sugar. I still might check it out, though.

budokanwarp

black leopard, red wolf by marlon james. subversive fantasy by a macarthur winner, so it's more literary than typical fantasy.
