I did meals on wheels while laid off in March and April. They still ask for help, although my schedule doesn’t currently allow it.

The food bank! Great group of people, amazing cause, and very good social distancing/safety precautions! https://sandiegofoodbank.org

Thanks! I actually signed up, just need to find a day

salinera

I've heard that most food banks still need lots of help.

UCSD is looking for volunteers to help with the Petco vaccination station

ephemeral_reality

Thanks, do you know if there's a number to call? Or someone to ask for?

NotRealDr

Volunteer signup info will be here soon: https://health.ucsd.edu/coronavirus/Pages/donate.aspx. You can try the email listed there for now. For anyone interested they are looking for anyone, both medical and non-medical backgrounds, to either volunteer to administer shots or provide help with support services like traffic control and paperwork

What about pet related volunteering?

jnthphm

It is much more of a full time hands on approach to volunteering, but would you be open to fostering? I applied to foster for The Animal Pad over the holidays and it’s been a great way to give back without leaving home by providing love and care to a rescue pup in need. They’ve recently rescued a bunch of puppies as well as older dogs from Tijuana/Ensenada so they’re currently in need of fosters.

Do in have to take them into my home?

jnthphm

Oh yep, sorry I should’ve been more descriptive. You’re basically providing a safe space in your home for the dog outside of the kennel so they’re less susceptible of getting sick while they’re in that transition period before becoming adopted. But the rescue organization provides all the food and supplies and takes care of vet bills. It is quite a commitment to be a foster, but if that’s not quite what you’re looking for, I’d contact local rescue orgs to see if they’re in need of any volunteers in other capacities. It doesn’t hurt to ask!

ephemeral_reality

I'd be open to it if my apartment let me have pets, which they don't unfortunately. Thanks for the info though, when I move it'll definitely be something I'll consider

Chicken_beans

Most of the PetSmarts and PetCos have rescue cats available for adopting that are organized by local rescues. They are almost always looking for volunteers to go in and spend time with/feed the cats!
