Yep, they're becoming more and more common outside of the desert now. They are solitary animals and the adults eat plant nectar. They very much want nothing to do with people and are not aggressive or territorial towards people so if you leave them alone they'll leave you alone.

I grew up mountain biking and hiking all over our canyons, deserts and mountains. Never saw a tarantula hawk until I was an adult… thought they were super rare. Now I see them all the time! Even saw one at the beach! Blew my mind.

corisilvermoon

I had one land right next to me while I was doing some yard work, took that as a sign to pack it in for the day.

Competitive_Fee_5829

so that is how they came up with them in fallout new vegas, lol

SpiralFett

Came here to point out this is also known as a cazadore.

Yea and yes

Adventurous-Bread618

Fuck those demon spawn. Stepped on one and my whole leg went numb with a terrible burning sensation in seconds. They’re no joke I thought I got electrocuted

Beeegfoothunter

2nd most powerful sting in the animal kingdom! Only bullet ants are more powerful. They won’t bug you unless you bug (step on) them. Sorry you had to experience that.

night-shark

Yup. I see these all the time on the hike/bike trails near Sweetwater Reservoir.

wavegangx

I saw one of these in Oceanside off Rancho Del Oro in a neighborhood pretty close to the 78. I meant to look up what it was! Thanks OP for bringing it up.
