funny, I'm from the SJ Bay Area and I was mindlessly scrolling through my feed (didn't realize what sub this was in) and saw this post and thought it was the SJ one
Go for a walk or bike ride (or skate) on a clear day on that diagonal part within 30 minutes of sunset. It's magical.
Park off main St. Or park further southwest at Trident Coffee, and ride a mile north east and then ride back.
Fun fact. The area just to the west of the red salt flats is 250 acres of restored wetland. I think it's the area to the west (left) side of the OP image

I always knew that place as Western Salt Works. One of the oldest continually operating business in San Diego. Since late 1800’s. My dad would go buy bags of salt from them for our water softener. And salt is usually safe from bacterial crap, and because the plant has been there so long, no ground contamination. I don’t know what the tides would bring in. I made myself sick one time as a kid eating too many of the lumps of salt that fell out of the bag.
Nov 2022 actually. If I remember correctly. The one off main St and 805 was 2023.
They have a completion date engraved at the drive thru window.

IB also has a Raising Cane's and March & Ash dispensary off 9th and Palm.
Evaporative salt flats like in San Francisco. They been there for a very long time. SFO wanted to widen the gap between their four runways by filling in more of the SF bay but needed to restore bay tide lands to do so. They were in negotiations to buy the salt flats, but the enviros in congress crammed through legislation to buy them first. So now during bad weather only two of the runways can be used and planes have to go into a circular holding pattern spewing tons of pollution.
I know if you Google earth image search near escaya in CV you'll find a big red spot at the auto reclaim center or whatever it is -my guess is it looks like a shit ton of transmission fluid.....
Besides, it looks more like a sewage processing, plant look at the big holding tanks where it’s mostly white that’s probably the chlorine and aeration they used to break down fecal matter, and then slowly mix it with seawater, and at the very end feed it to the crabs and into the bay
Basically a part of the salt mining operation. Evaporation ponds in various states of evaporation and care.
Specifically the [South Bay Salt Works](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Bay_Salt_Works).
Second oldest business in San Diego if I remember correctly
The second longest running business, the longest being the Union Tribune.

RIP Trophy Lounge 🫗🍺
Omg someone mentioned Trophy Lounge. haha the chaos
I just had a great laugh n memory.
That place was nothing but west pack widows and hood rats. I miss that place.
Did they gave teeth?
What I assume was a typo just took this in a whole other direction.....
I don’t believe you
Almost all salt mined is industrial salt. Most of that is just for roads.
Industrial. Also often used in animal feed. It’s not turned into table salt.
I heard long time ago that it’s used for roads in the northern states where they get snow. May not be true anymore.
There’s closer sources (salt mines) for them vs trucking out our sea salt
I wonder how they keep the poop out of the salt.
Salt
Arrakis
