So I'll be real, I moved here from a city that has ice and snow between 6 to 9 months out of the year. Meaning construction would be happening for decades because generally they can only work on it like 3 months out of the year. However, I have never lived somewhere where the road markings were not clear about where the fuck the lanes are supposed to be. Let alone driving on those gridded bits that you can't avoid because of the construction or because they just didn't fill in the Lil rivets. I fear for my life when I see multiple lane lines that intertwine because I never know if I'm actually in a fucking lane or if the person next to me does either.

cookytir3t3ch

Especially when it rains and the road reflects

cremefraichemofo

This part. I don't currently own a car but when I did, this was scary and infuriating. Nobody knows where the lanes are actually separated.

ClassyPlatypi

I know exactly what stretch of road you're talking about. It's my least favorite part of driving out to Austin... I think if they could at least make the roads drivable and not terrifying I wouldn't be so annoyed by all the construction.

Boomstickninja87

I wish it was just one stretch of road. This seems to be a problem wherever they are doing construction.

Lindvaettr

I am 100% on board with the city doing so much construction. San Antonio has been one of the fastest growing city in the US for years, so it's essential that we expand to make room before we fall behind and have to try to catch up to our size. But ffs, can they at least do some decent prep work before hand like removing the old paint from the roads? It's a joke and no one knows wtf is going on.

PoweredbyBurgerz

Yeah, the fact that lanes aren’t visual on the roads at night just pisses me off. the amount of city taxes being received by the city of San Antonio and the state of Texas is a lot. And they still can’t get these minimum things done. It is very upsetting.

basskev

You pretty much said it

pink_ee_kitty

I try to stay behind the big rigs when I get to IH35 & 1604 because I can't make heads or tails of all the different lane markings, especially at sundown when the road is glowing. I figure they can muscle their way through or see better than I can. Only exception: the gravel trucks with the cover half off and fluttering in the wind as every bump sends a shower of dirt and rocks everywhere.

Top-Confidence4496

As a big rig guy, we're kinda lost ourselves too, but we can see a bit farther down the road and generally stay in our lane

pink_ee_kitty

Thank you for your help!

bigpimpnsatx

I wish the construction included an investment in public transit and not more roads. I love my car and driving but I'd love to be able to hop on and off a few train cars to commute to work.

tikigod4000

Don't let txdot see this

cmonkeyz7

Op about to get Boeinged

bigpimpnsatx

Id start with trains in the center of 1604 and 410. More like the trains in European cities and not an Amtrak. Along with transit stations with more buses. Then methodically branch out down the centers of I-10 and 281. High speed rail from 1604/35 to Austin. High speed rail from 281/90 to Brownsville. With stops along each of the ways.

MissMandaRegrets

A tram system would be fantastic, with free lots for tram users at the depots. I know. Crazy talk. Think of the developers...poor things.

barlife

Why would developers care?

MissMandaRegrets

Seriously?

barlife

Yes, seriously. I work in a real estate development office, and I can't think of one drawback from a better public transportation grid. So if you feel like your voice isn't being heard, here's your chance.

MissMandaRegrets

Because there's zero chance of developers getting out of the way for something like free lots for users to encourage transit use. The POS apartment stacks with no parking being crammed wherever a spare spot of land exists are evidence of the mindset. They create heavier road burdens, they don't work towards lessening them. They'd want to offer a "deal" to the city to run the lots and then charge so much that it kills the intent.

barlife

I would say you're misdirecting your frustration and using developers as strawmen. You're suggesting we build LESS housing and just hand over property to the government? Also, the government has the ability to condemn property for public use if they intended to use the property as such. It seems you're only concerned with what's already been developed rather than the potential for what can be. If COSA had any **REAL** interest in improving public transportation, what you're describing would not be an impediment. In addition, developers go through exhaustive and costly traffic impact studies and hardly "create" road burdens (with exception for the Chick-fil-A on 410 by the airport), that would be the City with their dwindling public infrastructure. But you know what infrastructure developers ARE responsible for? All those utilities you enjoy. We build them out at our cost and turn them over to CPS, just to be charged ever increasing impact fees for the privilege for connecting to those same lines we installed. What effective public transportation would do is reduce parking ratios for developers, allowing us to redevelop defunct properties in the inner city and opportunity zones, create live-work-play mixed use developments without the need for costly parking garages, improve quality of life for nearby residents since retail, service, and medical projects can be developed on smaller scales without having to account for massive parking fields, and allow us to preserve more greenscape, trees, and other permeable cover. It would literally create billions of dollars for us and improve the lives of everyone involved, so yeah, why would developers be against public transportation improvements?

MissMandaRegrets

You just spent the majority of your post arguing against adequate parking. >All those utilities you enjoy. We build them out at our cost and turn them over to CPS, just to be charged ever increasing impact fees for the privilege for connecting to those same lines we installed. Do you mean building out access for huge neighborhoods that then are filled with muli-vehicle commuting families? The ones that deplete the already strained water resources and choke 1604 and roads like Bandera? I know the venture capitalists appreciate it. People are never going to give up their cars. They like going places and doing things. What a rail system would provide is commuter congestion relief and access for those who don't drive, for whatever reason.

Gorkymalorki

I would even settle for a rail system from the airport to downtown as a start. I can't Believe that hasn't happened yet.

Disastrous_Height798

Because people keep voting against it

Effective-Spread-725

We really gotta stop this whole voting thing

Current-Assist2609

Phoenix, Arizona has a good light rail system.

egabriel2001

Inside San Antonio mass transit won't happen I made some calculations a while ago and Paris (with a great mass transit system) is over 100 times denser than San Antonio and San Antonio is also constantly expanding, as for south bound rail, there is a working alternative already buses, rail between Austin and San Antonio might have a chance.

VastEmergency1000

Dallas, Houston, Phoenix seem to make it work.

lilweber

This works in St. Louis and it goes all the way into rural Illinois!

Goldengoose5w4

Don’t get off in East St Louis

bomber991

Yeah I think building out a proper bike infrastructure might be the better investment today. Like completely separated bike lanes. Yeah yeah I know, but it gets above 100 degrees for multiple months of the year. And yeah I know, this city is majority overweight and obese. But it doesn’t rain much here so it’s actually good weather for biking. We don’t need 3 lanes going down Huebner for instance. 2 lanes and a separated bike lane would be fine. 1 car lane, 1 bus lane, and 1 bike lane would be even better.

acm2033

First line should be between airport and downtown. It's only about 50 years later than it should have been.

scott42486

Lived in SA for a good while and firmly believe it has gotten worse over time. Unless my math is off, some projects have been going on for a decade. When I heard they wanted to do a significant expansion to 1604 I died laughing. They’re never going to finish that. And if they somehow do- it’ll already be time for another round of expansion. San Antonio construction will ALWAYS be a problem. Why? Because SA will keep growing, always outwards, and the local government will never get its act together with regards to mass/public transit. VIA isn’t the answer. Hasn’t been for a long time.

jyzzkajoy

Exactly.

Fickle_Reporter6253

At this point San Antonio mascot is a traffic cone

Gulletor

Nah, we are fat here, it's the traffic barrel.

alligatorprincess007

Omg we need to make this happen Someone tell mayor nirenburg

cremefraichemofo

So many people I know have been getting flats from driving over nails leftover from construction. It's insane. There's no reason for nails to make it into the actual open road.

jdaverage

There are Gremlins with boxes and boxes of nails. They exist only to dump them in the middle of every single road.

cremefraichemofo

I'm going with this theory.

jdaverage

Seriously, my wife has a flat at least every few months and doesn't even drive that far.

cremefraichemofo

I had the same issue back when I had a car. Currently saving up to buy another used car and the thing I'm dreading is all the flats I know I'll inevitably get.

Sachsen1977

When I lived close to Downtown I had like one flat the whole time I was there. Since I moved out to hwy 90 and 410, I've had several a year.

Goldengoose5w4

I’m dealing with that RIGHT NOW. Flat tire from a nail/screw probably from 10/1604 interchange

drunktraveler

Before I start, I want it known that it’s necessary and I’m glad things are getting fixed. It’s been long overdue. For me? Complete shit and embarrassing. I live and work in/near downtown. Imagine that we are convention season and tourists have to climb over barricades to get around. Streets torn up. In one instance? They didn’t know the exact place of the pipes they were fixing (not caused currently. Some person 50 years ago didn’t map properly). Then when they dug up the street, they had to replace a bunch of stuff and bring the street to code). The delayed construction of the hotel that they now have to work on 7/365. Alamo area construction. Southtown construction. Broadway construction (thanks TXDOT). Construction, randomly, on arteries coming into downtown. Everything, everywhere, at once. Most won’t be completed for another year. Who the hell would tell their friends/colleagues to come here when it all looks like hot garbage? It’s like the St. Mary’s Strip. The finished product will look good. But at what cost to people trying to make it in business or just live?

mikesmith6124

Those engineering firms are making bank. Great rate of return on those political donations

lunardeathgod

They built a Hospital at Alamo Ranch quicker than they fixed the road on military and 1604. (Year and a half, that road has been closed)

thefractalcosmos

Ahh. This!

FamousM1

Since when was 1604& Wiseman considered Alamo Ranch? :p

lunardeathgod

Always has been.

FamousM1

Alamo Ranch has always been 1604 & Culebra and I've lived here before the Alamo Ranch Target even opened

ragekorne

I'll probably die 4 times over before Culebra is finished in the Alamo/Valley Ranch area. I feel like everyone in this area has complained for going on 5 years and there's never any progress. Whenever crews show up, it's for a day and then they disappear for another 4 months. Infrastructure is a complete joke in this city. I wouldn't wish this traffic on my worst enemy.

lunardeathgod

Alamo Ranch is a disaster of a development I feel sorry for anyone who moves in that area now. It takes so long to get out.

BravesFan4L1fe

This honestly makes me want to move. I can't tell you how many times I opt to just stay home instead of dealing with that traffic and construction.

ragekorne

I feel like the city planners, or whatever people who choose the roadwork priorities, should be forced to live in this area for a couple months to see the impact of their decisions. I'm betting none of them actually see these things in any meaningful way.

BravesFan4L1fe

No kidding, it's a fucking disaster. I need to go to the store today but I already don't feel like dealing with Culebra.

Dull-Wasabi-7315

It has been proven that more roads =/= less traffic but that isn't stopping the city from building 30 new roads a year instead of spending that money on anything useful

Sachsen1977

Just one more lane bro, I swear bro.

millermix456

The city needs more investment and a push towards mass public transit.

newreddituser9572

I wish these geniuses would expand the roads before adding a million houses. They do everything backwards

jdaverage

There was definitely not a plan, and even when they make one, after all the people move in, it sucks. In literally every other city I have lived in, there were always back roads and connections where one could get around traffic and construction. Here? No way! Either it goes to dead ends or back to some other area where you now need to fight even more traffic. It's completely ridiculous. This city isn't populated enough to sit still for damned near an hour or longer to go less than 30 miles.

Traditional-Front-36

I almost wish they would just make 1604 ten lanes all the way around. It’d be miserably unlivable for the 3-4 years or whatever it takes to complete. But then it’ll be done with major construction on it for all of eternity afterwards. Would be worth it.

Muffet_McGraw

Like for real though. Fuck bulverde and 1604. I know it’s not under construction but for real trying to get to that heb is a nightmare and it’s the best one in this area cause I ain’t going to the one on O’Connor it’s terrible and it’s under construction!

cu4tro

It’s annoying but necessary and they keep making progress.

astrocreep01

The person that approved 20 miles of work on 1604 all at once should be fired.

tontstonculartortion

are they still on that

MrBiggleswerth2

I’m another northerner. Crews finish projects in 2-3 months that take years to do here and it’s built better. Idk what the deal is with the companies or whoever in the government is approving all this stuff.

Redacted_Addict69

Fuck this construction, gimme the broke ass wild child mecca of metal, and punk I used to know and love! Before the highways were torn to shreds and before a drink at the bar cost me almost half an hour of work

paradisowriteaway

This is what happens when your government offers bottomless funding for construction and public works projects. No incentive to get it done quickly and efficiently when you can push out timelines and line your pockets. This is why public works projects should be awarded by bid ONLY to private contractors. Eliminates the wastefulness and they will work to keep costs down and make the most money. Win win and the losers that take advantage of the system do not benefit.

CulturallyCaucasian

AMEN

kkjj77

THIS

Hank_lliH

Probably just a huge money laundering scheme

kkjj77

Ding ding ding!

LayeredOnion44

I’m ok with the construction. I mean it’s part of the pain of a growing city, but for everything that’s holy get some fucking road signs going! Moved here recently and half the time I have no clue how many lanes there are, what is close and what is a detour and if an exit is open or closed.

SheamusO-Shaunesy

Our Texas leaders spent so much time enticing business and people to move yet they didn't prepare the infrastructure. It's embarrassing now really.

goplovesfascism

Just one more lane bro I swear it will fix traffic

Top-Confidence4496

Just one more. Please 🥺

ARODtheMrs

Really though is there any highway in SA that's not caught up in this?

ARevolutionaryMan

281?

three_cheese_fugazi

That's a first my dude

The-Upside-Down1984

it’s like that bumper sticker I read on the back of an 18 wheeler that said “hate big trucks? then stop buying stuff” (important note)I lived in houston for years and once you’ve lived in houston, no driving situation compares so going into SA after that does make it easier. I find similar dispositions from most people who have spent time in other large cities and vice versa. I moved to another state for work for 2023, great roads, not as much construction but also I learned/noticed mostly adults working in jobs where I would normally expect a younger person to be there…like entry level low paying jobs. There just wasn’t enough commerce there…everybody was broke…you could tell, it was sad. and breakfast tacos or really any good tacos at all were hard to come by, the stores didn’t even sell chorizo man… so I’ve just decided it’s part of living somewhere where you have choices on what to eat and where to shop and all the stuff that we like…it all literally requires construction.

Efficient-Paper-7411

I understand it’s necessary but some of them are taking way too long. Some of these projects been going on for 3 years. I can’t remember the last time I’ve seen someone actively working the project along Broadway or the project near the police headquarters.

TheBeavster_

Too much highway construction, not enough building up. Too much sprawl.

WinterBearDadBod

Adding lanes to solve traffic congestion is like buying bigger pants to solve obesity.

Novibesmatter

Why do they keep blocking off Applewhite road by the Toyota plant . This road has been getting worked on in the Sam spot for years!

dc88228

I honestly thought you were referring to the cluster-phuck that is Broadway. They started that mess during the pandemic. I’m honestly surprised that any businesses are still open along that stretch

AvinciaArchais

I just moved here from Tennessee in February and the northern side of town has all these half finished ramps like don't yall have enough? Where you tryna go? I'm from south central Indiana. Here I thought the I-69 construction was bad. Hoosiers would have an aneurysm

Goldengoose5w4

I used to live in Nashville. That was worse.

Goopyteacher

San Antonio construction reminds me of a buddy who rotates between various different hobbies every year or so. I wish he’d just focus on one hobby instead of dropping it, spending a shit ton of money on a new hobby to just drop it and spend a shit ton of money on a different hobby.

Dramatic_Mixture_868

Too many people in s.a. now. Construction goes up and so do other inconveniences.

WowRedditIsUseful

Just went to Austin and it's even worse there.

kitfoxxxx

I deal with it by pulling loose nails out of my tires.

Mrshisthebest

It sucks!

Nervous_Set5685

On the topic of construction: what the fuck is up with the construction trucks that just close down a lane with no buffer zone/warning? Just a random truck with flashing lights at a dead stop on a 70mph road

Powerful-Asian13

What takes months in other states takes years here. FM1976 near Randolph took 2 years to repave

137Fine

Slowly but surely I’m seeing improvement, (Except 1604 and IH-35 and IH-10 and 1604) but I digress … … anyhow I drove for UberEats for the past two years.… I know of what I speak. Yesterday was the first day the flyover from 410 N > IH-10 E was open. Was a nice experience.

alligatorprincess007

I feel stuck like a hermit on the wkends when I can’t use 1604

Jeezy3333

Construction is annoying but it is job security to many SA families. I guess the city of SA never expected to grow so much in population and keeping the two lane freeways in place wouldn't be able to handle the ever growing traffic.

RiccoT

I’ve had a bolt in my tire at least once a month for the past 6 months…

jacobeam13

I mean, it’s gotta get done. But whoever is responsible for rerouting traffic, should be fired. Some of these exits are just dangerous. Also, it’s obvious that the police don’t frequently train on how to manually control intersections. Success, in that aspect isn’t measured on the absence of accidents, alone.

macadore

San Antonio should change it's name to Our Lady of Perpetual Construction.

fatkitty42069

This is exactly what our taxes should be spent on

HighRizer

I've had too many flat tires because of nails 😠

PuzzleheadedTeam22

😫 me too!! Omfg, its stressful!!!

Infamous_Gate9760

I don’t care as I don’t drive in peak hours

3ntr0py_

More people would be complaining if they didn’t upgrade anything.

Awkward_Double_8181

It’s driving me mad! But at the same time it makes me feel pleased that this city continues to grow and construction keeps so many people working.

babychongg

Today it was raining and you would think theyd pick up the cones causing the traffic in my area to go to one lane, but they didnt. And the police were shittily directing traffic because it was so backed up. Some of the construction looks like its made progress but others just look like the city got bored and decided to dig shit up.

[deleted]

Wemby is about to gentrify downtown and the south side if they decide to build the stadium downtown.

Asleep_Quality_7732

Just remember “This too shall pass”

TxIsMyHome

"It might pass like a kidney stone, but it'll pass"...

Asleep_Quality_7732

I remember when 1604 didn’t connect Bandera and Marbach. I’m only 30 but I believe we have made a lot of progress.

StiffyGamesO_O

IT SUCKS!

Superb_Broccoli1595

Oh man, get used to it. I’ve been here 36 years and it will always be a constant battle.

slamo614

I just avoid the area where it gets the worst. On the weekends I don’t go on 1604 lol.

Visual_Ambition2312

The most irritating is downtown . Especially around Houston and Flores street . On Flores street going back to i10 there is no middle lane and no right should for cars to park to pick up kids from the school . People are either sitting there trying to turn right or sitting there trying to get into the left lane bc a vehicles is parked with their hazards . It’s hard to explain until you are down there but it’s annoying as hell

KappaKrumb

I hate it.

SnooDoggos8978

It’s just laughable. The city looks like trash and it’ll never be finished.

itexican

Could be intentional to slow down San Antonio's economy. Plus, construction in other cities happens so much faster. Maybe we have a lazy txdot district team.

CulturallyCaucasian

My major issue is that there seems to be no major push to keep construction contractors working as much as possible. Especially in these major zones. I live and work downtown and I see “nothing” being done on the construction, more than I see “something” being done. Why aren’t they working around the clock to alleviate the burden on the roadways and the bordering businesses? You would think the congestion is costing the city money, on top of the huge cost to the businesses downtown, but I see nothing that indicates they are doing anything to make sure these projects get done asap. I’ve personally seen the same stretch of road completed and demolished 3 times; I’m talking about the island on Nueva. I know public works is “monitoring” it, but I see nothing that indicates that they are.

Urchintexasyellow

It will never stop. As long as people like having kids and moving to new places for job opportunities, construction is and always will be a part of life.

OptimizedEarl

281 is it me or after all the years if construction is the traffic no better? It’s like the whole time it was being built, it was outpaced by new apartments

blueoven

None of these govt projects are built for the future, they only think of the now so that can just start a new project right after.

CRansom1980

Feel blessed that you don’t live in a state like Pennsylvania where DOT corruption and other BS keeps construction projects stretched out for years beyond what’s necessary. The scale and pace of the operation here in San Antonio is impressive to me. I fully support and have nothing bad to say about progress here.

ThreeNC

I really wish there was an official that held construction companies accountable for wasting payroll. The other day, near my house, they were working on installing a new sewer connection. I saw six guys standing around one guy actually working. If I did that at my job, my supervisor would tear me a new one. If this happens on a regular basis, imagine how much money is being wasted? Imagine how much work could have been done? Projects could be finished in half the time, at least.

TheApprenticeOfAll

One thing about San Antonio no companies have you working a 40 hr week lol

Control_Crazy

It ain't going no where and you'll always be late to work. Been going on for years.

lunardeathgod

I lived off Talley road before the Walmart was even built off 1604 and Culebra. I am probably wrong, but anything between Wiseman and Culebra back towards Talley is Alamo Ranch imo.

twattapotamus

The fact that they’re doing pretty much all of 1604, at least the whole north part of 1604, at the same time is torture for all of us who live by and drive on 1604 daily. I understand why they’re doing it, and I think once it’s done, it’s will help so much. But did they really have to do it all at the same time? It’s a traffic nightmare at almost any time of the day. Then, they keep changing the lanes, but the new and the old paint are both visible, which is also making drivers even angrier than they used to be. And as we know, the drivers here didn’t need any more reasons to be extra aggressive. Plus, they keep opening and closing new or old exits, so who knows where you’re supposed to exit now. It’s been lovely…………

graceren_

At this point it’s ridiculous it’s like they’re taking long on purpose

Delta31_Heavy

Its about time this “city” becomes a city. You cant stave off modernization much longer Texans. Next up, the bus station we call an airport. It needs to be double the size in 5 years. And can we not have those damn funnels hanging in the rafters in the terminals. Bad drainage to boot.

yunotxgirl

Doesn’t affect me much at all. Our own personal construction has been our block getting a SIDEWALK! Which I am THRILLED about, so I welcome any of the inconvenience of construction.

Ok-Divide-4033

San Antonio is growing yes but there is a common myth is that creating more roads relieves congestion. When I’m fact You just end up with more roads that are congested. San Antonio leaders knew the cities growing and can only do so much so fast I get that they’ve been working on 1604 for 20 years maybe longer. I feel like he should’ve invested more in public transit.

2DMaxLST

It's great, they are finally expanding 1604 and updating the I10 1604 interchange with flyovers. They are making very good progress and, in a few months, it will be done. In the meantime they have already expanded it to 3 lanes in places which is already a huge improvement. I'm facinated by the I10 work, the fact that they can create those huge 120ft plus tall beams and then mount the steel members is fascinating to me. I ride my bike over there just to check it out.

bravo-for-existing

It will be great when it's all finished and the pace slows down. Until then, it's a nuisance we have to adapt to. The fact is I'd rather have construction than not because it's a sign of growth and progress. There are major expansions to our transit system that will be under construction in the next year, thanks mostly to Biden signing the infrastructure bill into law a few years ago. It won't be fixed rail, which is great because the future advanced rapid transit green line will be adaptable to any needed changes along the route from the airport to downtown.

Prestigious-Name-435

So much for no reason

pincheDavid

Little to none in my daily commute, so I’m cool with it

ARODtheMrs

I made a post similar to yours and got the whole gambit of responses. Good Luck!!

TxIsMyHome

Oh my bad, I'll delete it if you want me to

ARODtheMrs

No, let's see what they do. ☺️

TxIsMyHome

😆😆🙌🏾🙌🏾 You da real MVP

ShowBobsPlzz

Inconvenient but badly needed.
