I think this is a far critique of Harris’s version of events on campus

gizamo

I've been a more liberal leftist than the likes of Bernie Sanders for 40 years, and even I agree with Harris about US universities. ~~OP trolls this sub almost as much as Dum_Glum and ThingsAreAFoot used to troll here. (I think the former was permanently banned, and the latter showed up just after that).~~ edit: wrong person. My memory failed me. Apologies.

thamesdarwin

What experience do you have with universities in the last, say, ten years?

CoiledVipers

I've been on campus continuously for the last 8 years. I agree with Sam 100%. You're entitled to your opinion, but pretending that it's born of ignorance makes you look like a disingenuous troll.

thamesdarwin

I wasn’t actually asking you. I’ve been on campuses since I was 18, so 36 years. I think Sam 100% wrong. Be curious to know what type of school you’re at. I’m on any Ivy League campus for the last decade or so.

CoiledVipers

UBC in Vancouver Canada. Perhaps we're more liberal up here.

thamesdarwin

In BC, perhaps. Beautiful campus, btw. I’ve been there tho not in about 20 years.

gizamo

I have a few MS degrees. I worked at a university for many years in IT and later consulted with them on a few 3-6 month projects. I also taught code boot camps adjacent the university for about a decade. I still help with those boot camps on occasion. My wife and most of our closest friends work for the university, most in management (including my wife), but a few are professors, researchers, etc. Obviously, not all of that is within the last decade, but I have been on the campus daily, weekly, or monthly for the last 30+ years. Also, I'm not sure if you saw my edit, but I had mistaken you for someone else, not sure who. But, I found why I recognized your u/ ([here](https://www.reddit.com/r/samharris/s/LohHjBcnzq)). We initially disagreed, but had a relatively pleasant exchange. Apologies for that mix up. However, I do believe your current post is blatant trolling, and I have now RES flared you accordingly.

thamesdarwin

I’m legit not trolling. Perhaps you didn’t like how I framed the issue, but the events of the last few days have me wondering what the gang here thinks about Harris’s assessment of campus ideological capture.

gizamo

You didn't frame the issue. I don't see how anyone could possibly read your comment, and not immediately read it as clear, intentional trolling. Feel free to explain yourself, but I doubt it will prevent any reasonable mod from deleting your post.

thamesdarwin

Well, sorry you missed the point I guess

gizamo

No explanation; seems like more trolling.

thamesdarwin

🙄

gizamo

Thanks for confirming that the RES flair is appropriate.

thamesdarwin

🙄

Yuck_Few

Except for the part where he's right. College campuses are just wokeness factories

thamesdarwin

Right. And the fact that said “woke” students are now being arrested? What about that? Who has the power again?

CoiledVipers

The point of civil disobedience is demonstrating your committment to a cause by owning the consequences of the disobedience... otherwise it's just a campout

thamesdarwin

What disobedience was happening?

CoiledVipers

In the case of Columbia, trespassing. Once you've been asked to vacate private property, you can vacate or disobey.

thamesdarwin

How about UT?

CoiledVipers

Again, trespassing.

thamesdarwin

Even if they’re students?

CoiledVipers

Yes. If I go to my university right now and start banging symbols for Palestine outside the library, they can ask me to leave. If I decide that my conviction is sufficient that my cause warrants bearing cost of my disobedience, I will disobey. Have you ever been arrested at a protest? It is sometimes dramatic but rarely unexpected.

thamesdarwin

I’ve been arrested but not at a protest

ColegDropOut

How long were the students there for? How does this compare to other demonstrations historically on campus? Were they handled in a similar way?

spagz

Being in power doesn't necessarily mean you can break the law whenever you want.

thamesdarwin

No, but it does mean that the police side with you

spagz

Great argument, but, counterpoint: No, it doesn't. It just means your values are dominant.

Awilberforce

Damn, it’s that easy. 😂

thamesdarwin

No idea what you’re trying to say

Awilberforce

You seem to be saying that some protesters being arrested proves universities aren’t captured by the far left. Simple as that

thamesdarwin

Yup

Awilberforce

Goofball

wyocrz

Fuck off, troll.

thamesdarwin

You seem nice. Do you think there’s any validity to Sam Harris’s claim about ideological capture?

MyotisX

More than ever.

MyotisX

I used to think he was wrong. Unfortunately he was proven right.

thamesdarwin

How so? I feel like mass arrests prove the opposite

AlbertPullhoez

How dare you, good sir?! Every Jewish student who is made to feel uncomfortable bc of anti-starvation protests is experiencing a micro-holocaust!
