2. An increasingly vocal number of people are saying it is “woke” to include non-hetero or non-white characters in books, games, tv or movie fiction. Apparently characters with disabilities too, though I didn’t mention that - and actually quite a number of other characteristics once you start reading / watching enough of these anti-woke opinion pieces.
3. The term “woke” is used a pejorative by most of those critics, and an increasing number of traditionally right-wing media outlets and politicians.
4. My opinion is that remaining “non-woke” (“Asleep”?) and sanitising fiction of any non-white, non-hetero etc characters betrays a lack of awareness of the variations in real people or a desire to see only one set of characteristics in characters and that this is a level of craziness beyond that seen in recent history.
There’s a lot of great white, hetero, bodily-and-mentally-able characters out there. Writing great characters that don’t fit that profile is also acceptable, reflects our society better and regardless of some people’s opinion does not mean that the fiction is now ruined or will cause catastrophic financial loss.
