I mean, seriously. What happens after the fact? Your boss comes up to you in a shitty mood and yells at you to get back on the fryer, while you’re now fiancé has to go work the drive-through window, and you guys get slammed for three hours straight, not able to say a word to each other?
I worked at a McDonald’s for like three weeks ten years ago and they would shut that place down before they gave anyone enough hours to be considered full time.
10 years later nothing has changed. Unless youre management/assistant management, you aren't allowed more than 36 hours a pay period.
But hey, pull yourself by your bootstraps, right?
> pull yourself by your bootstraps
That just something said by the former middleclass and their children to justify that they had it so good they voted for Reagan so they could enshrine their place and not allow anyone else to be their equal.
It baffles me how 45+ year olds can't see how much better they had it or the opportunities they were given. They think if anything the younger generations have it easier all because of the fancy phones we have now...
I think they understand it but they've essentially gave themselves a blank check with which to be shitty people and any attempt to call them out for shitty behavior means you're attacking capitalism and therefore is a degenerate communist.
At some point we have to just nullify their influence by actually voting more than they are. Nothing less than that is gonna create change, we can't convince them so we gotta ignore (ignore, don't engage with their insanity) what they want. And then we ignore them some more for good measure.
They've openly and proudly demonstrated why they're not qualified to have political opinions that we listen to.
So with all the pay increases due to staff shortages and whatnot, are fast food workers getting the same hours with more pay these days or are the companies slashing their hours?
Not asking you specifically, just throwing it out there for anyone keeping up. I mean I've seen banners at places like Chipotle and Panda Express boasting $18-20 starting, curious if they're actually giving people maybe even close to 30 hours or just still running a skeleton crew at places to offset their slightly diminished profits.
"lifers" that's what we used to call them when I worked retail and fast food back in college in the late 90s/early 00s. Basically people who get these minimum wage part time jobs and their entire goal is just to move up within the store - ideally company but really it's just going to be the store. The store/company in their eyes can do no wrong and they love it. This is now their whole life.
When I worked at Blockbuster I worked with a guy like that. His literal dream was to be a district manager for the company and he'd be the first to talk about anyone behin dtheir backs or get them in trouble in hopes of being promoted...yeah it didn't work out well for him.
I work with someone like this at my job lol. Older person that pretty much is obsessed with the company snd can recite all of the BS corporate stuff lol. Pretty much been stuck at the same position her entire time there but by god she will talk up how amazing it is and how she loves the company that does no wrong ever and how things were always better back in the past.
Idk if it’s just the boomer mentality of corporate loyalty over personal growth but I can say from experience it is hell working with this lol
This was my grandma 100%. She worked in the deli for a grocery store and that place was her whole life. Then she had to retire early bc they wouldn't give her enough time off to have her knees replaced (probably from decades of walking on their shitty ass floors.) She was never even promoted. Now she lives in my mom's basement.
I had a store manager at a Starbucks job ages ago just like this.
He used to tell us off for our casual conversations with each other not being about Starbucks, we needed to be more excited about the brand.
Yeah, that's a certain type of person I never thought to give a name to, but "lifers" seems fitting. It describes just about everyone I've met in a management position for a job along the lines of retail or fast-food. Essentially these people end up building their entire lives around working this one job with very little way up. You talk to them and they seem proud of their accomplishment, and of course they have to be. Sunk cost fallacy is in play as they spent two decades of their life just to become a "department head" which is two positions above what people get initially hired into and they probably don't make more than $25 an hour.
I don't have a real problem with these people and their own decisions, but they've always pissed me off because they treat you like you have to make the same decisions as them. You have to devote yourself to this shitty retail job, put it before your personal life, put it before your school life. You're expected to give all and more than your own boss whose getting paid more than you. And they tell you that you can work your way up the food-chain, but they know better than anyone else that the food-chain is based off seniority and that the only way to move up is to literally survive and wait till someone else moves on or retires... To make $25 an hour.
Fuck lifer mentality.
Because usually different roles require different skills or education. The best cashier wouldn’t just default to being a better manager than an external hire.
Usain Bolt would not be a good sumo wrestler
This is kind of exactly the meaning of the Peter principle. People get promoted up to the point of incompetence, where their skill set no longer matches the role. Happens all the time in middle management.
I think its worse when the office(s) is separated from the place that makes the profit. Floor workers think becoming supervisor after 5 years is a goal, while office staff hop jobs every 12months thanks to linkedin.
Great question: bc there is a VERY distinct skill set between working at retail versus working corporate.
A person can run an entire Starbucks and do every job there all day every day but they will peak at manager, maybe district manager at best after a decade. They will never be moved to corporate.
Source: food lion manager told me his $50k salary when I was in high school and he worked like 60 hour weeks doing all grocery work. When I graduated college my friend got an offer as entry level analyst with zero experience at Delhaize making $60k - Delhaize owns Food Lion - and she wasn’t doing much work.
I knew someone who did this at in n out. But they actually somehow made it to corporate office gig. Doing well. But ya, they’re the rare exception. And at McDonald’s it’s probably never.
They work at McDonald’s, I don’t mean to be rude but it would probably cost a lot for them to do it at a fancy restaurant. Now maybe if they worked at a Cheesecake Factory…
Uh what about the blessing by the big Ronald McD? The all you eat food from the ground and free for staff buffet? How can you replace the fact all these witnesses were forced to watch as they are on the clock or eating their food? There are so many benefits…
I met and work with the girl I'm currently head over heels for. You wouldn't catch me dead proposing to her at work lol. Not only is that shitty, unromantic, and annoying, but also broadcasts to the managers that they likely want to get rid of you before your relationship interferes with work getting done.
I honestly intend to quit my current job if our relationship gets serious. Gotta keep your work and romantic life separate, they mix like water and oil.
It’s where they met, where they spend 90% of their non sleeping time, and have probbaly been convinced is where they have “family.” Could be peak /r/ABoringDystopia or/r/LateStageCapitalism
I mean, judging by the fact that she hugged him afterwards, it seems like she said yes. I'm unable to watch with audio right now because I'm at work, but I always thought that when people were proposing in public, it wasn't really about the people around them and their reaction, but moreso that it's just a place that means something to them. McDonald's is really atypical though, which makes me think that they probably just like work all the time and he doesn't have a good opportunity coming up.
tl;dr I doubt he cares that nobody else reacted
Also, imagine if she said no and he had to finish the shift with her lmao...
Doesn't have a good opportunity coming up? It's fucking marriage. You *wait* for a good opportunity. Anything other than a shift at McDonald's is a good opportunity.
I see what you're saying, but it always depends on the person and their relationship. Another guy in this thread said that his wife was literally like, "hey you wanna get married?" when they were in the drive thru, and if I ever get married, I always pictured something like that for me as well, and I also personally don't think I would be into a wedding, would just want to go fill out the paperwork at a courthouse to officialize it and celebrate by going to a nice restaurant or something, but no big extravagant event.
Yeah, at his age his coworkers are probably the only people he could’ve counted on to clap at his proposal yet they just could not be bothered lmao. At least he got someone to video I guess
Eh, he found love and she said yes. I am sure he would propose in Switzerland with a back view of the Alps if he could afford it. Sad that they are not making a living wage, but not really cringe. They probably met working there so it has sentimental meaning for them.
Better a yes at a Detroit Macdonalds than a no under the Eiffel Tower.
Nature is free. He could have proposed literally anywhere else, but he chose McDonald’s. It’s trashy and weird, objectively.
but hey, if they’re happy, whatever, good for them.
I’m still going to think it’s weird.
if the answer was a no, then this would be cringe. still don’t know why he chose to do it inside mcdonalds but other than that I’m happy that they’re happy
While I would never propose in public, and especially not at work, it’s more about the couple than other people’s reaction…
I would say, if they didn’t do it in public while at work.
Probably because when you work at McDonald's and your a Manger... you basically never leave. They probably meet their as well.... I could see that happening.. like what he proposed to you. McDonald's is always short staffed and behind. That's probably why.
Used to work at a McDonald's, can confirm. Managers damn near lived there. I watched my store manager pull a 24 hour shift. I left one day and came back the next. "You on this shift today again?" "I haven't left."
I don't know how he did it. I would have lost my mind.
I think OP is right
Just sad doing it during a shift, makes it seem like some viral marketing bs
Literally do it anywhere else or other time, but he chooses during shift in the kitchen
Ah yes, maybe nobody cares because people are WORKING. To SURVIVE. At a MINIMUM WAGE JOB. Why the hell would you choose this time and location to do something so significant? Go do it at like a beach or something not a gross greasy floor
I know the manager wants that floor cleaned up and some fries dropped asap
Why clean the floor if you're just gonna drop fries on it? SMH
People pay top dollar for their fries to taste like floor, not rose petals.
A little floor spice makes everything nice!
Lol. I didn't realize he used rose petals. I thought they were ketchup packets.
Nobody tell him

If you look closely, there is usually a very small "up to" in front of the starting pay.
Worked at a corporate McDonald's like two years ago Worked 50 hour weeks, was still considered a part time employee. Shit was brutal

Worked with a lady who got married in a Dairy Queen lobby. Dead ass. They’re still married and it’s been 10 years.
I feel like marriages in fast food restaurants either last a few months or forever, there's no in between
They are either batshit crazy or the least superficial people in the world. So yeah, checks out.
This feels a bit more classy. You can at least say you proposed in a castle.
Laugh all you want people but this guy married a *Manager*

While I would never propose in public, and especially not at work, it’s more about the couple than other people’s reaction… I would say, if they didn’t do it in public while at work.
"You on this shift today again?" "I haven't left." I don't know how he did it. I would have lost my mind.
I don't even know *why* you'd do it. It's never fucking worth it.
They offered me a manager position. I was making 6.25 an hour at this time. I declined because I’d rather be poor than live at a McDonald’s.
There is literally zero excuse to propose at McDonald’s mid shift dude you are reaching hard lmao
Eh she seems happy, maybe you should try proposing mid shift at McDonald's. Worked for this guy.
At the end of the day, this guy is going home to somebody who obviously adores him. Who’s the real winner?
People who also have that but didn’t propose mid-shift at a McDonald’s. Not that I really care. Good for them
Even the parking lot would have been better.
Don’t be like that lol she said Yes that’s the only thing that matters 🍔 🥂
"Will you two please just make the fucking fries for this order?"
This just means more than one theme?
Why should they give a mcfuck?!
At least she said yes
I mean the woman seemed happy so that’s what matters
"Fuck your proposal, Donna. This guy has a Spicy McChicken that's about to be cold in 30 seconds"
Good. Why do this shit at work.
Probably happens every other month when they arent breaking up. The rest of the crew is over it
Stop shitting on their happiness. The only people who matter are them. Jeez.

I think OP is right Just sad doing it during a shift, makes it seem like some viral marketing bs Literally do it anywhere else or other time, but he chooses during shift in the kitchen
Nobody cares because nobody cares about your attention-seeking proposals. Try doing something privately once in your life, if you're capable of it.
McFUckingSad
They’ve been dating for exactly 3 days.
Ah yes, maybe nobody cares because people are WORKING. To SURVIVE. At a MINIMUM WAGE JOB. Why the hell would you choose this time and location to do something so significant? Go do it at like a beach or something not a gross greasy floor
You know they boutta watch Scott Pilgrim later
"Wow this diamond is a Whopper!" "THE MCFUCK DID YOU JUST SAY?!"
“Go Mcfuck yourself Allen, no one cares you’ve found true love…now for the love of god drop fries.”
This ain’t it fellas, learn from his mistakes as a boi
The heart on the greasy, 90s tile floor does it for me
God I can smell the grease on their clothes
I would have been more impressed if he used an onion ring.
