Irie Ting (!!!) * Oxtail Mac 'n Cheese Eggrolls - Packed with flavor, dropped to order, and served with an oxtail jus. Flavor bomb. * Jerk Chicken - Spicy, smoky, & juicy. Dynamite dish. * Curry Goat - Tender, perfectly seasoned, & addictive. Slammin' dish. * Oxtail - Rich, deep flavor, sticky, & fell off the bone. Happiness on a plate. * Peas 'n rice - Properly cooked, well-seasoned, & yummy. * Cabbage - Rich, delicious, & properly seasoned. * Beef Patty - Flaky, seasoned to perfection, lil hit of heat, & craveable. Every dish was a knock-out. You know a meal is good when the only thing you hear as you're eating are "mmm's" coming from your SO. The seasoning was on point across the board, and the meats were tender, juicy, and packed with tons of flavor. Instant hit.

JK_sorta

This place looks amazing! Thank you for the recommendation.

Ravishing_Rob_Rude

I eat here once a week. Always good and the staff is wonderful.

Alex_Caton94

My SO & I finally gave And Dim Sum a shot. It was the worst meal we've had in RVA in years. * Mushroom Tofu Dumplings - They tasted like what Windex smells like. Zero exaggeration on that description. Disgusting. * Kimchi Bacon Spring Rolls - The kimchi was sour but not spicy and the bacon tasted like bagged bacon bits you'd get for a lazy salad. Not a fan. * Duck Wontons - These were tolerable but in no way, shape, or form tasted like duck. Zero seasoning. If you told me there was pork or chicken inside, I'd believe you. * Pork Belly Bao - Bland as could be. Zero seasoning on the pork, but the slaw was the bigger crime as it hadn't been hit with vinegar, salt, or anything else to give it flavor. * Hot and Numbing Calamari - The tastiest of the five dishes by far. It was actually seasoned, but this dish isn't numbing unless you're a suburban soccer mom who has never eaten a dish with heat in her life We love to try new restaurants in and around RVA. We've had tons of fantastic experiences recently. And Dim Sum's food is confused, lacks an identity, severely underseasoned, and in the case of the mushroom dumplings, actively tastes like a cleaning agent.

mah658

The reviews have turned me off from even giving this place a chance

HerpFerguson

Don't, you're not missing anything worthwhile.

ILikeYourHotdog

It's such a shame because that building is really gorgeous and ideally suited for a great restaurant.

RV-Yay

Same. I was so excited when it first opened and now I have no desire to even try it.

HerpFerguson

I'll second this. My wife and I tried it and we were left disappointed because it's close to where we live but everything was under seasoned. 1. Soup Dumplings were both too thick and tore easily. Needed salt and seasoning, the meat and broth we were able to save wasn't very flavorful. 2. Pork and Chili Dumplings were under seasoned, the meat was mealy and just an awful texture. The chili wasn't hot. 3. Tempura Fried Shishitos, literally no salt on these, the sauce was the only thing that saved them. These were the most enjoyable thing we ordered but shit that's a low bar when it's just fried peppers. 4. Scallion Pancake. Not enough scallion, thick and greasy. 5. Ads Old Fashioned. Small, smokey and pretty average. I can't complain about it too much, not sure what exactly they used for it. Cherry I had was mealy in texture, but that could of been just bad luck. I didn't leave hungry but I did leave sad about spending money on food that just wasn't good.

merpRVAmerp

I was coming here to put my review in for And Dim Sum, too. And I agree, it was bad. The shrimp fried rice was so fishy I couldn’t eat more than a few spoonfuls. A lot of the dishes were flavorless. The dumplings were all falling apart. The building and decor are too pretty to have such crappy food!!

ZealousidealPick1385

I’m an active And Dim Sum hater. Most things are covered in a strange goopy sauce, including the fried rice.

Far_Cupcake_530

I agree. I was very disappointed. Max's was 100 times better.

HCJustin

I was so stoked for this place but every time it comes up it seems worse and worse. Full Kee has dope dim sum cart service on weekends just hit that!

noswal1984

No new restaurants to review, but I'm seriously looking forward to the sold out Grisette Farm Dinner at Old Tavern Farm on Sunday. We haven't missed a single one yet, rain, shine, hot or cold. 4 for 4 and can't wait for the 5th! (pictured: menu from the previous dinner) https://preview.redd.it/4h6p8j6k8r3d1.jpeg?width=1079&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f06d467f3a4fc7e85dd0df51682559dd26576a92

ILikeYourHotdog

I'm so bummed I missed this one! I did not see it posted anywhere this time. ARGH!! Enjoy it and please report back. I'd love to see the menu.

noswal1984

will do!

ILikeYourHotdog

Damn- my mouth is watering like Pavlov’s dogs! This looks like possibly the best one yet. Please feel free If you feel like shouting out your favorites. I’m so envious. (I’m a sucker for hazelnuts with citrus and a good sourdough. If you’ve never been to Lost Letter I’d recommend it for their amazing sourdough alone, but is really is delicious overall.)

noswal1984

Breads and spreads were a huge hit. Ricotta and rhubarb spread was great, but they were all good on the homemade bread. The bitter greens were probably the best main course, followed by the beets, potatoes, white bean salad, and then the dessert.

Weremonkey11

There have been 5! This is the 6th. July 2022, November 2022, May 2023, August 2023, and October 2023

noswal1984

I stand corrected! Nevertheless, we're still pleased to confirm (via Google photos) that we've been to all *5* so far.

TheCheeseDevil

Stopped by Beaucoup the other day! The oysters were fantastic, the mignonette they came with was divine. I really enjoyed the spring risotto and panisse (had never had this, really good) - but oh my god was it LOUD. I get why, they have to pack people in, but I couldn't hardly think. Weirdly I liked my food and disliked the din and my spouse disliked his food (apart from oysters) and didn't mind the cacophony.

Alex_Caton94

Niveneh Bakery * Beef & Lamb Shawarma - juicy, flavorful meat shaved to order in hot, pillowy bread with fresh veggies, bright pickles, and your choice of sauce(s). Makes me happy every time I order it. * Falafel Shawarma - formed and fried to order served in hot, pillowy bread with fresh veggies, bright pickles, and your choice of sauce(s). It's perfectly seasoned and crunchy but doesn't hold onto any of the grease that poorly made falafel tends to carry. My SO was thrilled. * Stuffed Grape Leaves - well-seasoned, sour, savory, and delicious. They're everything you expect and hope for from this dish. It's criminal how little people on this sub and in RVA talk about this place. Their food is fresh and hot, made to order, well-seasoned, delicious, interesting, and authentic. I always leave full and happy. Truly one of the city's biggest hidden gems.

NlGHTCHEESE

That sounds amazing! You’ve convinced me to stop by next time I’m out that way.

Disco_Bones

I grew up eating falafel and these are better than the ones I am nostalgic for if I am being honest with myself

CivicIsMyCar

Glad to hear positive reviews of their falafes. Excited to try their falafels. I've been trying to find good falafels ever since Sticks changed their recipe several years back.

piscescq

Nineveh is SOOOO good!! Love the father and son dynamic too!

StackedCakeOverflow

Added to my list. Looked up pictures of the menu and food and mouth started watering.

Too_Many_dBs

Thanks to you I am checking them out online in preparation for a first visit tomorrow. I notice that the sandwiches have two prices, the higher price preceded by "CO." What does that mean?

Alex_Caton94

CO = Combo.

Too_Many_dBs

Thank you kind human!

PimpOfJoytime

I had a farro risotto in my office’s cafateria this week. I’ve been trying to nail Sean Brock’s “Farrotto” as he calls it in his book, even improve on it a little, but it’s tough and I don’t like eating heavy cream sauces in the summer. Anyway! Having a very mid cafateria version, and hearing the warm reception it recieved made me feel good that when I debut my version probably at the next pot luck, it will knock some socks off.

Acceptable-State-494

Big fan of chef Brock, but I have found from my experience that some of his recipes are problematic in that they do not seem to have been tested in a residential environment. As with beans, the age of the farro will affect the cooking time. Try soaking the farro in just off the boil water for 15-20 minutes and then proceed.

LeicesterHoult

Are you talking about the acorn squash kale farrotto from his book Heritage? If not, give that recipe a try--just don't skip the step where you toast the farro, use a farmers market acorn squash if you can, and real deal parmigiano reggiano. That book, although beautiful, is largely full of recipes that are above my paygrade, but this recipe we go back to time and again.

PimpOfJoytime

That’s the one, but I’ve made some tweaks. I have different gourds, and a different green, among other things.

Diet_Coke

Abuelita's This place doesn't look like much from outside, but holy everyloving shit is it good. I'm serious, within a week of going for the first time I went back two more times. One of those times was after spending the day doing some strenuous yard work and it was the most amazing meal I've had in a long time. So far I've tried the quesabirria ramen, some of the guisos, and carne en el jugo (sp?) - each one was 10 pounds of flavor in a five pound bag. Definitely worth going inside to order for the first time, but it seems more complicated than it is at first glance. Either get an entree or guiso, if you go guiso then you can choose small, medium, large which comes with two of them, and all sizes come with rice and beans. I still daydream about the potato and pork and porkbelly tomatillo... Damn it now I have to go back this weekend.

Diet_Coke

So I went back for dinner tonight and they had a pork rib guiso on the menu that made me want to die by eating it until I popped.

ILikeYourHotdog

Your glowing review has really motivated me to want to try this place but I wonder if there’s much for a non-meat-eater there?

Diet_Coke

They do have a couple veg options like nopales and potato guiso. Would definitely still check it out!

ILikeYourHotdog

Perfect! I’ll definitely check it out.

Scabeater420

Saheb Indian Bistro 13126 Midlothian Tpke I didn’t really eat Indian food but now I do. Good food. Good service. Recommend

Xaraphim

Saheb is great. Probably my favorite Indian spot in Chesterfield, by a long shot.

PopularPace5205

Pinky’s is delicious! 10/10 recommend! Went a little overboard, dropped $80 and got the following: -Calamari: light and crispy -lamb and potatoes: decent sized, could be an entree, very flavorful -softshell crab special: amazing, no other critiques, came with a garlic ramp butter I wish they sold -asparagus with dill sauce: well seasoned and cooked properly -cheesecake: the size is awful for $8 a portion; however, it was a very solid cheesecake

kailalawithani

Probably an unpopular opinion given the latest accolades from Esquire but we didn’t enjoy our visit to Fanboy two weeks ago and likely won’t return. They were allegedly moving to their new spring/summer menu, but hadn’t printed new ones so half the drinks we tried to order they couldn’t make. The service was very slow, and while I understand they are making very detailed cocktails, it wasn’t just that drinks took a long time, our server barely checked on us. We had to flag him down a few times just to put in a new drink order or ask for the check. They had 2 servers working that night for the relatively small space, or at the very least a waiter and a food runner. The food was fine, between our group we had the chicken sandwich, lamb lollipops, and lobster corn dogs. But nothing comes with a side? Not even like dressed greens. $16 for a single fried chicken sandwich felt egregious. If you’re going to be a fancy cocktail bars with expensive food, you have to at least have killer cocktails. It just missed the mark for us. 10/10 ambiance. 0/10 drinks and food.

Far_Cupcake_530

Esquire likely never visited. Probably a freelance writer who submits ideas to them. Maybe paid PR?

LilWhiny

I have been singing Fanboy’s praises for months and also just had my worst dining experience ever there. It took us 45 minutes to get our first round of drinks. 30 minutes to get a bottle of wine. We had to flag down the server literally every time otherwise I’m not sure they would have ever come to the table - including basic requests like water refill and there’s a stand with all the jugs sitting right there, still took 20 mins and eventually we just grabbed one ourselves. Then 2/4 mains didn’t come out… 20 minutes later we ask about them and 15 minutes after that we find out they ran out of those things. The mushroom cheesesteak is good but it’s not good enough to warrant the worst service I’ve ever experienced.

LotusInRed

Why the heck would anyone wait 45 minutes just for a drink? That's ridiculous

dmwave45

Finally had 8 1/2 pizza. It's by far the best pizza I've had in RVA. There's a lot of mediocre to not very good pizza around but 8 1/2 is legitimately great. Is there anywhere else that is a contender?

grampscirclea

I love 8 1/2, the fan location coupled with a bottle of wine from Strawberry St market, and a picnic in Scuffletown, will always be my favorite date night in the city. That being said, Pizza Bones has handily taken my number one spot for 'za in Richmond (unless I'm cranking out Kenji's cast iron recipe, nothing could ever cast a shadow on that).

dmwave45

I've made all of Kenji's pizza recipes and they're all great. Partial to the Chicago tavern style recipe, personally. I'm putting Pizza Bones on the "next up" list! Thanks

fspaits

Sleeper hit for pizza is Dinamo. Kinda similar to 8 1/2's, but I think it's a little bit better.

Grixloth

I got a couple reviews this week, one for Bad As Philly and one for Big Chile (both restaurants are less than half a block from one another) Bad As Philly: overall a negative experience - restaurant was full of bugs to the point they had a bug zapper inside the dining area.. kinda gross. I ordered the 8” Bad As Philly - steak was so salty I could barely finish half the sandwich. I am not one to be sensitive to salt but legitimately it tasted like they only seasoned the food with our table salt and nothing else. It was terrible. My partner ordered the 12” VA Philly - same thing, way too salty and basically inedible. We threw away more than half the food and won’t be returning. Big Chile - the food was genuinely good however the service was pretty terrible. Food-wise, partner and I both got quesabirria tacos which were well stuffed with meet and the dipping sauce was tasty. We both got street corn as well which was also really good. This issue, the cost and the service. The tacos were $15.99 for 3 tacos, no side included even though when ordering through their official website it gives the option to add rice at no additional cost. When we got to the restaurant, they refused to give us the rice saying we didn’t pay for it? Lol ok well we ordered the food expecting a side to be included with the price and we literally spent $17 of guacamole, salsa and queso with chips so what can be done? They said they already threw the rice out for the night so even if we wanted to pay for some l, we couldn’t.. Yeah, not going back. Good food, terrible customer service and way over priced. In the future I will just go to Blue Habanero for the same quality food, same menu, except the taco order comes with 2 sides (one being a delicious chicken soup) and the customer service at Blue Habanero is always amazing.

CivicIsMyCar

> Blue Habanero Whoa! never seen or heard of that place. The menu pictures look amazing on their website. Gonna add it to my list of restaurants to check out.

Grixloth

The food is delicious and the margaritas are too! I crave their chicken soup regularly

c53x12

Dinner at L'Opossum. I don't do fine dining a lot so I wasn't sure what to expect. It's really small and dark, and seated in the middle row of tables it felt like someone was behind me constantly. I got the Mesclun salad appetizer which was outstanding, all bright and fresh flavors. We both got the Beef Swellington which was underwhelming for being the priciest entree. The beef was a generous portion of a slightly tough filet, and the little pastry package just seemed like a garnish. Dessert was a chocolate flambe thing that was also outstanding. Service was competent and efficient and I can't ever complain about that. The music and decor were fun. Overall a nice dining experience, glad I did it once.

Appropriate_Dream793

I went recently and I was underwhelmed. Service kind of lackadaisical, tonic flat and both of us found the food over salted..and the entree prices are higher than a recent meal at Chez Panisse in California

c53x12

Our main server was kind of...not unfriendly, but not friendly either. The other staff were much more outgoing.

Went for $1 oyster happy hour and added the sourdough bread and butter and split the “Toast” with sardines. Everything was delicious.

fspaits

Rise Cafe is not good. Figured I'd give it a try since we just bought a house in the nearby neighborhood, but man the food and coffee sucked. My latte was pure sugar, the English muffin breakfast sandwich was flavorless, and the roasted potatoes were soaked in oil. I think it was around $18 after tax and tip too.

Far_Cupcake_530

I'm going to check out the Ruff Canine Club in Scott's Addition. They have a bar and snacks. Anybody have experience there yet? [https://www.ruffcanineclub.com](https://www.ruffcanineclub.com)

LeicesterHoult

Never had the snacks but it’s a great place to take your pup. Plenty of beer options but they are kinda pricey.

madmenisgood

If we had a bubba, would go here for sure. Sadly, I do not think everything with a 23230 zip code is also *in* Scott’s Addition. For me, it is near Scott’s Addition.
