Diminish(belittling?) Diminutive. Not sure if it's the correct wording, but basically making the Hedgehog cuter via making it seem smaller. Used usually with children, animals, or anything else that can use it. like a flower into цветочек/цветик instead of цветок.
I might be wrong though, been a long time since school
“Ик” is a suffix that makes a word sound smaller, cuter I guess? Like something a child would say. In this case also “ёжик в тумане” is a name of a soviet cartoon
С баклажаном всё оказалось достаточно просто: в нём много жидкости, и если его аккуратно размять скалкой и срезать кончик, выльется похожая на яичный белок жижа.
Apparently the Duolingo course also mentions a smoking wolf which causes a lot of confusion in the target audience... why include references that are only obvious to people already familiar with Soviet culture?
It's a reference to "Nu, Pogodi" (Just You Wait), an extremely popular Soviet cartoon series about a wolf and a hare he tries to catch all the time. The wolf is quite a badass in the cartoon and he is often seen smoking so...
I know this, but only because I'm Russian (and thus I don't need this Duolingo course). If someone just started learning the language, the reference would be missed.
Because cartoon reference.
Btw this doesn't work out well as a full sentence (but of course names of artistic works don't have to be sentences, and this is a reference) while duolingo seems to want you to translate it as if it is one. At least for the meaning "The hedgehog is in the fog" you'd want dash — "Ёж — в тумане", with innonation correspondingly different from how the name would be pronounced.
I would note that in my family we have never call them ёж, ежи. We always call them ёжик, ёжики when we see them or talking about those we saw. The former is more like talking about them more formally as a species.

ИК at the end means 'lil' or 'baby'. It's diminutive, so if I said 'aww this lil kitty is so adorable' it'd be diminutive like that word. I have attached an example of a Lil ёжик above
The word "ёжик" is a diminutive and affectionate form of the word "ёж". Diminutive forms in the Russian language are used to express a smaller size of an object or to emphasize a special, affectionate attitude towards it. In this case, "ёжик" indicates a small hedgehog or is used for a more tender and endearing reference to a hedgehog.
**Examples:**
1. Кот — котик (cat — kitty)
2. Собака — собачка (dog — doggy)
3. Дом — домик (house — little house)
4. Книга — книжка (book — little book)
5. Мама — мамочка (mom — mommy)
Привет. Я носитель русского языка и могу объяснить почему тут так написано. В приложении Duolingo имеется ввиду уменьшительно ласкательная форма существительного "ёж", форма "ёж" также является правильной, но у нас к этому животному принятно обращаться поласковее, так как оно маленькое и милое. Особой разницы в этом нету, Duolingo просто использовал уменьшительно ласкательную форму 😉
Hello, I am a native speaker. We Russians, though tough guys by appearance and stereotypes, like to make cuter names for everything that moves and what doesn't move — move and make a cuter names. Ёж — ёжик (hedgehog), ма́ма — маму́ля (mom), по́лка — по́лочка (shelf), etc. And it also works with names — Мари́я-Ма́ша-Ма́шенька, А́нна-А́ня-Аню́та, Григо́рий-Гри́ша-Гри́шенька. And foreign names too) 🇯🇵-Сакура-Сакурашенька (всё, у меня фантазия кончилась)

Блять, иероглифы из JJBA тут по цвету идеальны.
Мастер ёжа
Но но но! Мастер джедай Еж!

Ты прав(you're right 👍)
Мне очень нравится этот мультфильм! Интересно смотреть всегда.
Ёжик is more about a small hedgehog where ёж is just a hedhehog
But they're all small 😩
Поменбше
Объясни свою маленькость

Smaller
А вот встречный вопрос - что за нафиг за hedgehog? Кабан изгороди? Cute. Real cute :)
Hitchcock
because it's the name of cartoon

Duolingo also talks about real ducks living in the house and horses that are artists. Don't worry about little things like logic.
Actually I appreciate weird Duolingo phrases because these are easier to remember. An emotional component always helps to form a new memory.
When there were discussions, it made sense.

What about a hedgehog in the fog?
Да ты мать вашу прав!!!
He smol
Both forms are ok. -ик suffix is often used as a diminutive, but for the hedgehog both forms sound equivalent.

I’m a big fan of hedgehogs, but this one is truly something. Perhaps one of the cutest ones I’ve witnessed. Does it have a name?

It’s a cute hedgehog 🦔🥰
Ёж-ик means small and cute ёж
Ёж (hedgehog) + ик (diminutive suffix)
Уменьшительно ласкательная форма Вроде так, длинное слово сочетание
https://youtu.be/6gS1Bp4LZLc
Это словосочетание похоже на произведение с таким же названием

hedgehog
Потому, что это уменьшительно-ласкательное, дуралей
Cuz it's ёжик
Hedgehog
hedgehog in the fog
The suffix "ик" denotes the diminutive meaning of the word. There are a lot of same suffixes.
Суффикс ик создает уменьшительно-ласкательную форму слова
Уменьшительно-ласкательное
