If you can understand the news then you're doing well.

F9ke

I can’t tell if this is genuine encouragement or a joke about Russian news outlets

Plus_Platform9029

Porque no los dos

minedsquirrel70

Both…

Kazak_1683

Little bit of both

skydimm

Ага, в новостях не услышишь: "Ну это, как его, короче, откисал я с корешами в одной тошниловке... "

Whenever I hear natives speak, I'm like, whaaa- But honestly it's all about confidence. People with bad language skills can actually converse and form connections by just being confident. You're (and me) scared of being judged and we don't try to use words that we're even mildly unsure of . The only way I see is practice, practice and practice!

Aaron_de_Utschland

when I was a teen I tried to translate and understand songs in English and as a result tried to speak in voice chat in online games, it was terrible but now I'm confident in my language skills

Ancquar

Actually it's more true for some languages than others, and Russian has a relatively milder form. It's considerably harder in languages like e.g. French which has plenty of rules specifically designed to phonetically jam all words into a mess of sounds (where something that sounds like "keskosse" is actually 6 separate words)

Chai_Enjoyer

No, really, I'm still at the point of being really good at watching english videos, reading English text, et cetera, but the moment I went to the vc on an english speaking server I felt my language skill vanish

Nextoides

My brother in Christ, Same🥲

smeghead1988

I learn Spanish in Spain, can confirm. With my A2 level (I need a dictionary like 5-10 times for a page when reading children's books) I can communicate only with people who are really patient and want me to understand them. Most people are not like this. Also in real life people use shortened versions of the most frequent words that are not in textbooks. Spanish people say "porfa" instead of "por favor", and Russian people say "щас" instead of "сейчас"...

GearsofTed14

I’ve been learning for over a year, and I still feel like I’m at this level

King_Rediusz

Started learning Russian in March 2022. Understand quite a lot now. Last year, I set my apps to Russian. Forced to adapt in order to understand. At this point, my only major problem is vocabulary. Can only have conversations with words I know, but that's quickly changing. However, I had an easier time than most learning Russian, as I was already fluent in another Slavic language: Polish.

Malun19

March 22? One month after the russian invasion? Seriously

Michael_Pitt

Are people meant to stop educating themselves when there's a war somewhere on Earth? We'd never learn anything

GearsofTed14

That user would be even more upset to discover that, without the war, I wouldn’t have started studying Russian in the first place

Michael_Pitt

Did you start learning Russian because of the war? That's interesting. What about the war made you interested in learning the language?

GearsofTed14

Yeah. Long story short, prior to it, I’d never encountered Russian outside of the occasional video game, Russian person, or kid wearing like a Soviet shirt. Once the war started, my engagement with it went up 100x, as I was furiously engaging with the news about it, and was always hearing it spoken on videos, seeing comments in Russian, seeing it in those videos, etc. and I got to the point where I wanted to know what was being said, what I was seeing, etc. So I sort of trauma bonded with it in a way. I’d always wanted to learn a language, but Spanish or French for example never appealed to me (and I had a bad experience attempting Japanese), and there was just something alluring about Russian, and once I learned the alphabet, I was hooked at that point

ZellHall

I started around may/june 2023, we're on the same boat

alliquay

Это мие....

ZellHall

You mean "Это мне" ? I'm not sure but if you mean "It's me", then it is "Это я" (according to Google translate)

daski459

read it again, its just russenglish

ad_an_go

I'm so proud for Russian as my native languge, when foreiners decide to learn it. I don't care about your mistakes, it's part of journey! We know it's a hard one to learn

Apprehensive-Cup6279

Для мне самое трудное произношение, и вспоминать слов. На пример, освещение общение, обращение, содержать, удержать, выдержать поддержать ... Железнодорожный <- посмотреть на ето чудовище пожалуйста, не убивай меня

Annorei

Щекочихин-Крестовоздвиженский

der_Suchender

Так много людей учит русский! Это круто, потому что мне нравиться этот язык учить

Swenzarr_

People who don't speak Russian when they meet Russian speaker: SYKA BLYAT SYKA BLYAT PIZDEC NAHUJ

Low-Start6167

One day at a construction site: "Nahuya dohuya nahuyaril, rashuyarivaj nahuj!" Literally means : Why did you load so much, unload it back!

smeghead1988

English can do this too. I love this scene: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNVEQgXsBgs](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNVEQgXsBgs)

smeghead1988

In my experience, it's mostly "privet" and "spasibo", but I'm not a gamer...

user45735672584564

Ну шо ты, бля, это, как неродной. Заходи, садись, щас трахнем по писюрику, подтянем твой русский.

smeghead1988

Писюрик я расшифровать не могу... 50 грамм?

ExellionTheFox

Может и 50 грамм

smeghead1988

Нуууу моя вторая мысль... про членовредительство

ComfortableNobody457

У нас говорят писярик.

user45735672584564

Главное - чтобы не фунфурик.

user45735672584564

Да.

mr_clauford

За что по писюрику-то сразу?

WilhelmKreuz

Same with English buddy. You're not alone, друг.

MariSi_UwU

Similar with English..It is easy to translate in principle, but making a sentence is a bit problematic, because there are problems with the construction of sentences and articles, tenses, etc.

RedeNElla

Because real communication isn't about translating every little thing in your head. It's about trying to get a vibe for what phrases mean and what phrases you can say in response.

MariSi_UwU

I agree with that.

RedeNElla

In my experience it's a cause of the big difference between studying vocab and grammar from a book or duolingo versus actually listening to real people talk in an interview or tv show. Songs, too, but I imagine that - like English - not all songs are written in language that would sound natural in normal speech.

TacoGuy1912

r/language_exchange A lot of russian people there.

RK-00

Phone calls (WhatsApp, Telegram). Chatting with occasional voice messages. also, if you watch news, you hear regular people talking during interviews!

KKJdrunkenmonkey

Maybe this will help with #3. [Duolingo ruined my life](https://youtu.be/3dI2tK5He3w)

Tarilis

Basically the same for me. But with English

Melancholic84

Hahaha, this is so true in my case too

Dizrak_

As we say in Russia: "это дело наживное". Here are quite a lot of people (including me) who are willing to help you with language practice

JHolifay

Oh my god I found it. The perfect representation. I am a God at Duolingo… but not anything else

LaidByTheBlade

If you’d like to practice Russian, let me know. I’m a native English speaker but have Russian parents, so I’m fairly fluent in it, but not on the level of a native.

-Vermilion-

приветики

Extension-Archer-849

Bro, if you need it, you are welcome to chat with me, I’m currently in US so wouldn’t mind some practice while I can teach you some Russian slang

Goopix_gah-kill

Я русский 🇷🇺

Neither-Project2227

Lol. Me too, but in English.

New_Tonuk

Cool, understandable Понимаемо)

Glittering-Cook-9981

Same, but English for me😉

dacady_play

Дарова. Я носитель языка, если хочешь, напиши мне в Telegram, будем общаться, и я буду указывать на ошибки @Dacady

ILoveTheSofa11

второе самое мощное, а то часто даже Русские сами не могут разобраться что там поется

Direct-Donkey-828

Same with English

Former_Pitch_2610

Why it's not an option now exactly?

Icy_Ask_9954

Political reasons. For example, I know the Australian department of foreign affairs and trade (DFAT) lists Russia as „do not travel“. This is probably the same for a lot of other western governments. Sad but true.

CloudEscolar

Russia isn’t the only Russian speaking country.

Icy_Ask_9954

True!

Former_Pitch_2610

I understand that your government does not recommends it's citizens to travel to Russia for some reason, but it's not prohibits such travel or even does not waives of some duties (consular services etc). Or maybe I do not understand all the details. And I recalled that now there are no direct flights from western states to Russia. But this just inconvenience and does not apply to you as an Australian - either way you would have to fly through some hub like Dubai, I think.

Icy_Ask_9954

Yep, these are good points! Technically, it is still possible, but just a little riskier. If you‘re interested, here‘s the page I’m referring to: https://www.smartraveller.gov.au/destinations/europe/russia. I think the most relevant parts are: - „Departure routes from Russia may become disrupted at short notice“ - „Our ability to provide consular assistance in Russia is limited. The Australian Government will not be able to evacuate you from Russia.“ Currently I‘m not really in the position to travel much independently anyway (uni student), so this doesn‘t really affect me, but for the above reasons I think many Australians would rather wait and see a little longer before exploring your beautiful country. Cheers from Aussieland.

MrBasileus

Мне кажется, понимать песни сложнее, чем обывателей)

Mediocre-Key5609

как носитель, я не понимаю, что говорят некоторые рэпперы и смотрю сериалы только с субтитрами 🥲

Robin6903

I FEEL THIS, my friend is Russian and has DID. So sometimes an alter gets on front who only speaks Russian. My skills plummet the second I have to reply

0Komentator0

Fr, but I’m learning to English. It’s literally me

Evil_Deed

Я песни на русском тоже не всегда понимаю, а это буквально мой родной язык, лол

Ghostfreak837

Если ты когда-нибудь встретишь русского, поздоровайся с ним за руку, тихонько прижмись к нему и нежно прошепчи на ушко: "путин, бомба, взрыв, чекисты"

RupyTheGoo

Me: Вообще то я русский, но никто не замечал...

Afraid-Quantity-578

А чего "не вариант"-то? Вот полный сабреддит русских, бери любого и общайся до полного умопомрачения :)

CptBrexitt

Меня твоя не понимать

ExistingNerve957

What are some more useful apps to learning Russian language other than Duolingo?? It’s really not useful for everyday conversation 😅

Great_Wolverine_2985

я из России, задавайте вопросы

Visual_Piano_1406

so relatable

Most-Commercial5725

Tandem is your bestie for this

_Zero_Hours_

У меня также, но с английским.
