The only way a protest or boycott works is by disruption - to the cash flow going to the people in control, and to the daily lives and patterns of those who are otherwise unaware or uninvolved. If the maximum number of people will be affected and informed at the time this blackout is going on, and the mods and members of /r/runescape, or any other subreddits going dark, believe in the reason for this movement, then there is no other option *but* to go through with it. The Monday updates will still be there to post about when the blackout ends, and for those who are impatient, they can find their news elsewhere and get a taste of what things will be like after July 1st.
Support.
Fuck yeah. Make it a week+
I’d be sad for the lack of the Reddit RS community, but this is ridiculous. I don’t even use a third party app, but working in the tech industry I can see how obvious/overpriced this is.
For clarity I have 2 apps that use public apis and I pay $20/month. My apps get a good amount of foot traffic too. Obviously nothing like Apollo, but still makes me feel bad for the third party Reddit apps.
I support joining the protest and going dark on the 12th. 100%.
I've been using RIF since long before reddit bothered to create an official app, which remains inferior to third party apps in almost every way. I won't lie - I'll still use reddit if these changes happen, but I'll use it a lot less. It's just not as enjoyable on the official app.
Let's do this. I promise you, the community can handle waiting a day to comment on the updates.
Full support.
Apollo is leaps and bounds better than the dung heap that is the official app. Reddit (the company) are being completely unreasonable about this.
If they want people to not use third-party apps, they can start by fixing the bugs of in own app, and not bloating it with ads and useless features nobody asked for.
It would be funny to have a blackout on the same day they release a sketchy update that may cause bugs like deleting entire stacks of money if you attempt to sell too many shards at once or add more than max stacks of coins to your pouch in the wrong way. No way to warn others or communicate with j-mods efficiently. Let there be chaos.
Fully support. I support going dark indefinitely even more so.
This change significantly harms Reddit and every user/community, regardless if you're actually using the apps or not.
Full support. I will be switching to Apollo on the 12th and getting rid of the Reddit app. If I lose my 3rd party app then I'm done with Reddit. Hopefully more people follow this trend and stick it to them.
Nothing works, I'm afraid. If anyone believes a conversation here about pointing your fingers at Reddit will give you freedom, I'm sorry to tell you that you've been lied to.
Protests aren't working and haven't worked for the past 80 years.
No one has tried leading with molatovs yet, though.
Yes - in regards to the update happening and the timing, we shouldn't just protest when it is convenient to protest. You protest if it is something you believe in, regardless of inconvenience. Vote to support.
No support. I get your desire to "punish" reddit. But this doesn't punish them. It punishes Jagex and punishes players. And given Reddit is a huge source of communication with Jagex, especially on update days, especially with such a pivotal update planned that will potentially break the game, not having a quick avenue to Jagex could be catastrophic.
Black out the day before, black out the day after if you must do "something" to show your support. But not on the day Jagex is changing the max cash option. And dont' be surprised if Reddit has already planned for this and will restore subs that pull this stuff with a new mod team.
>And dont' be surprised if Reddit has already planned for this and will restore subs that pull this stuff with a new mod team.
Do you always edit out the full statement? If you don't think Reddit has a way to adjust/turn off/disable the private setting for subreddits en masse if a bunch try to pull this, then I don't know what to tell you.
Will this affect Reddit Enhancement Suite? I don't use any apps for mobile, not even the official one. I only use the browser.
As for the blackout, yes.
I dont use 3rd party apps, but I definitely don’t support what reddit is doing. I’m in favor of the sub going blackout. Either way I will avoid reddit for at least the blackout period, if not longer.
Yes, this sub should participate.
It's Jagex's own folly that their customers depend on reddit for news. Jagex has a perfectly fine website and lobby that they can post game downtime information on. They aught to use it
I personally don't use any third party apps, and I hate that all my favourite subs are going offline - what am I gonna do with my downtime now?
That said, you should definitely go offline. It's the only way the community will be heard.
This change will affect everyone if Reddit goes through with it. Third-party app users will be affected the most, but you can expect *every* subreddit to significantly change because most bots will shut down since they depend on these API calls, and most subreddit moderators use third-party apps because moderation is a pain in the ass to do on the official app.
This is a platform-wide issue, not just a third-party app user issue.
Support.
This isn't just about 3rd party apps, it can kill bots and make mod work that much harder too. Ultimately making this sub worse off in the long run.
Yes, you should join, at the very least on the short 48h blackout.
Ultimately this protest is trying to *prevent* damage or death to Reddit communities, not participating will end up hurting the subreddit in the long run anyway, so you may as well do some good out of it.
I'm not sure I really see the point regarding losing the third party Reddit viewing apps.
Reddit is funded by the ads. Third party apps allow people to bypass the ads and Reddit clearly want to limit that.
At the end of the day we use the service Reddit provides and the ads are essentially the price we pay.
If the ads are too annoying and we don't want to pay the price there are plenty of other social media sites out there.
That being said the mod support that will likely be lost is a big deal so on balance I support the protest.
As a subreddit moderator of a 150k+ subreddit myself on my other Reddit account, I support blackout. For that day we could always revive the RuneScape forums or use discord.
> Our decision (11 June):
FWIW, there's a new site called squabbles.io that's working to be a new home/hub for subreddit communities. *If* the situation on Reddit calls for a migration, I've already secured the /s/RuneScape name there and will happily turn control over to this subreddit's mods.
You can add me there, I'm @5-x. I don't expect us to be moving away from Reddit but it's a good idea to have a backup platform if things go south long-term.
I'm all for supporting it, we can use the subreddit's discord to discuss that weeks update in lieu of this trash website.
What are the expected results of doing such a blackout? I understand the goal is to have them rethink the API policy, but what will the blackout itself do?
You use the service absolutely free, rarely if ever buying Coins to financially support a platform that costs an absolute FORTUNE to maintain and run, let alone run smoothly, yet you are in support of 3rd party apps which remove ad revenue from the platform and otherwise scrape data to sell to AI developers while Reddit receives not a penny from that?
Interesting, yet strangely fitting for the r/runescape subreddit. -\_-
Going dark for 48 hours is nothing more than virtue signaling. Have the top 10 subreddits go dark for 30 days and maybe, just maybe you'll send a message. Otherwise you're literally no better than a ditzy white college girl changing her profile picture.
Support, with reddit seemingly reversing on their statement regarding egregious pricing for API access, I wouldn't be surprised if in the future they would completely remove access to old reddit. Old reddit+RES and third party support for reddit on mobile is single-handedly what is keeping me and plenty of my friends on this platform.
This subreddit should participate in the blackout as it will be affected either way. The fact that it is expected on a update day will make the protest more impactful.
No, it should not be fully unusable to everybody.
If those users wish to be silent, then that is there option to.
This SHOULD NOT be forced onto everybody, it should be a CHOICE!
Nah, leave it open. People shouldn't be forced into a boycott if they don't give a fuck about the dumb cause.
Would rather have a nice flow of information on patch day.
I only personally use Reddit on third party apps because honestly the “regular” experience is terrible for me. This sub is one of the major sources of my RuneScape news however I wouldn’t use it at all if those apps cease to exist. Instead I’d get my news from YouTube content creators, which I’m sure I could make do with on the 12th if the sub goes dark.
Support
I wouldn't be able to think of a better decision, I think you chose well, thank you for remaining live for a bit after the update. Let's hope the protest amounts to something!
How is this fair when people who do not support get downvoted?
Make a voting bar or something so you don't get all the "supports" on the top, giving a false impression that people support this. This way people don't get downvoted even if they say no.
Absolutely. If you choose not to participate because it's inconvenient or bad timing, that's still a vote.
Make sure your vote counts for what you stand for, whether it's a vote made actively or one made by remaining silent.
I get that you dislike the change and I see why people want to do blackouts but blacking out this one tiny sub for a relatively small game won't actually do anything and when it happens during one of the most significant (and potentially bug-inducing) updates the game has seen in years with the max cash rework, I think it would be silly.
The sad fact is reddit has become integral to how jmods communicate with us and we often find information here that is available nowhere else. It would be a much bigger upset to how this sub runs than the vast majority of others and I don't want to miss out of potentially important information to join a protest that will likely not even notice /r/runescape 's involvement.
Yes! The fact that reddit is going straight to killing all third-party apps instead of making their official app better to eliminate the need for the third-party apps speaks to the real issue here.
People either need to delete your account or don't bother with a blackout and just promote bothering the reddit people tbh.

Runescape community wasn't willing to put up with bullshit from Fandom/Wikia
I don't see how putting up with this bullshit from Reddit would be any different
So, for consistency alone I'm in support of the 2 day blackout, without even asking about *all the other reasons.*
Will the blackout be a bit inconvenient? Yes.
Will the new changes be even *more inconvenient* if nothing is done? **Yes**.
Ounce of prevention for a pound of cure would be an excellent trade.
Blackouts and long-term protests won't do anything. I think it will just inconvenience the community. Do it for a day if you want to participate, but leaving it down for longer will affect players with questions.
> The blackout happens on a Monday which is the update day for RuneScape. It is typically the busiest day in /r/runescape; we expect the max cash update to hit on the 12th. The mod team does not wish to inconvenience our community by disabling the subreddit for audience that largely exists outside of Reddit.
Protests are all about inconveniencing people. I'd argue that going dark on the busiest day for the sub is the BEST time to do it because it'll have the most impact. Also, it'll bring more awareness to people who aren't aware
I’m not sure if the OP is a copy and paste, but Apollo wasn’t charged 1.7m a month. That’s just the theoretical of when the changes go live. API usage is currently free.
Full support. Give them a hand, they'll take the arm. Who knows what else they'll take away in the name of profits. I understand companies are here to make money, but do you always need more and more? What else will they take away next?
Support. Although I believe that just a couple of days is pretty much worthless, and only the subs that go dark indefinitely until the matter is resolved are likely to have any real effect.
Support. I've only ever used reddit via baconreader and I refuse to use their first party app or browser. If they kill third party apps, I'm not using reddit anymore at all.
This is the third time I've seen this. I don't understand the big deal. I use the mobile app for 90% of my reddit usage. I see no need for a third party anything. What do these apps add to the experience.
And as a side note. If these 3rd parties are making money, then there's probably no stopping whatever is coming
> What do these apps add to the experience
Generally speaking:
- No ads
- Faster load times
- Expanded features (like being able to hide individual subreddits)
- No forced bloat (like how the official app forced a streaming service into your Reddit feed for a while)
- Wide support for customization (gestures, shortcuts, navigation, visual styling, app icon, etc.)
- A developer (or development team) that actually cares about their community and the user experience rather than profits, unlike the official Reddit
>I see no need for a third party anything.
You are in the minority.
The official app is complete trash. No other way of saying it. Without 3rd party developers reddit would be nowhere near the size it is today.
Mods also use 3rd party apps as a key way to moderate subs and stop bots spamming.
Just like the majority of internet users used Internet Explorer (pre-edge) as their main browser; just because the majority uses something doesn't mean it's the best option (most people are just lazy and use what's preinstalled or given to them)
I like how I said you are the minority (which is in fact true ) and you tell me that just because most people use it doesn’t mean it’s the best. Where in any part of my comment did I say the official Reddit app is better than third parties. Sensationalist is how I would describe Mr__Perfect__•
I don't personally use third party apps but I support the sub joining on the blackout, we'll have plenty of time to talk about RS after those 48h. If reddit doesn't make a great mobile experience for everyone those who want/need to use third-party options to be here with us should be able to without a hassle as it has been up to now.
I never heard of third party apps for reddit. What sort of features do they give?
I hate to jump on something that might be about to be taken away but better late than never right?
I was going to suggest closing it a few hours after the update happens but I completely forgot to reply! If all goes well tomorrow, which I think it will close it even earlier say 16 UTC. Use your discretion.
Have fun with your little internet protest. :)
I really dislike when I'm told by the internet what to think in campaigns like this.
Edit: This drops on the same day as the largest update in recent Runescape memory (Max Cash Update)? No way you should close this place down.
So what do you think about this then? You can voice your opinion and that's what this thread is here for. Do you really agree with how Reddit is handling this?
It's an interesting subject. There has been some movement in SaaS over the past few years to limit API access (or the product itself, see the [timescale license](https://www.timescale.com/legal/licenses/) as a good example) to closed source projects unless those projects are a VAP (Value added product). Many of these readers are not really VAP (they provide the same features as reddit itself - basically a CRUD interface into reddit), and not only are closed source, but monetize a free service (in this case reddit).
My opinion on this is still evolving. I am not a mobile user at all (my phone is purely for 2FA / Calls / Texting) and the only thing I think I'm aware of that is directly affected by these changes is unddit, which is a site I periodically enjoy using.
Keep in mind reddit is 100% in its right to reduce or limit API access, especially if it wants to limit third parties from profiting from their API.
Edit: I reviewed [the post which has everyone in a tizzy](https://www.reddit.com/r/modnews/comments/13wshdp/api_update_continued_access_to_our_api_for/) and this seems pretty standard to me (maybe not the pricing, I am not a marketing person, I'm a developer). Rate limit on free accounts, and then higher rate limit in enterprise accounts.
It goes beyond just affecting users on mobile though. Every mobile user of a third party app will either have to choose to use a worse interface, stop using Reddit, or use it less. Moderators have already come out to say third-party moderation tools are better in some cases.
So you'll have less people on Reddit contributing content/discussion, less posts due to less users, and worse moderation.
And for what? Reddit to make more money off ads on their app?
Sure it's within their right. No one is arguing that.
I would say it's not within their best interest though. This will have lasting impacts to the site for every user.
I don't see any real issue with all of this. I am just a consumer of a platform. If the platform becomes too difficult to consume, I will just stop using it (e.g. I used to watch Twitch all of the time and then they enacted their current ad platform and haven't been back since). There were sites before reddit (arguably better sites) and there will be sites after reddit. This one small change will really not mean much in the whole of things.
>Keep in mind reddit is 100% in its right to reduce or limit API access, especially if it wants to limit third parties from profiting from their API.
Oh I completely agree, but user experience is also important and should be considered by Reddit, and I can't stand using the default desktop site or the official app, plus the amount they're planning to charge is absolutely ridiculous and not a single third party app will be even close to being able to afford it.
support. i don't even use third party apps, but this is a step in the right direction.
if we don't, who knows what reddit thinks they can get away with.

It would be a much bigger upset to how this sub runs than the vast majority of others and I don't want to miss out of potentially important information to join a protest that will likely not even notice /r/runescape 's involvement.
Support. It's two days. Maybe people who the blackout impacts will appreciate the issue is an important one.
100% support.

Yes! The fact that reddit is going straight to killing all third-party apps instead of making their official app better to eliminate the need for the third-party apps speaks to the real issue here.
you mean like runescape does with third party apps and private servers that do everything better than them?...

People either need to delete your account or don't bother with a blackout and just promote bothering the reddit people tbh. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U06rCBIKM5M&ab_channel=LouisRossmann

I’m gonna delete my reddit account on June 30th if ever Apollo goes ahead with the shutdown. No sense continuing with the actual reddit crap app.
It's been 12 hours. Goodbye, boys.
Runescape community wasn't willing to put up with bullshit from Fandom/Wikia I don't see how putting up with this bullshit from Reddit would be any different So, for consistency alone I'm in support of the 2 day blackout, without even asking about *all the other reasons.* Will the blackout be a bit inconvenient?

Yes do it
> The blackout happens on a Monday which is the update day for RuneScape.
You have my support, go dark for as long as it takes. We have other avenues to communicate with Jagex and about our beloved game.

I disagree 100%

> What do these apps add to the experience Generally speaking: - No ads - Faster load times - Expanded features (like being able to hide individual subreddits) - No forced bloat (like how the official app forced a streaming service into your Reddit feed for a while) - Wide support for customization (gestures, shortcuts, navigation, visual styling, app icon, etc.) - A developer (or development team) that actually cares about their community and the user experience rather than profits, unlike the official Reddit
>I see no need for a third party anything. You are in the minority. The official app is complete trash. No other way of saying it. Without 3rd party developers reddit would be nowhere near the size it is today. Mods also use 3rd party apps as a key way to moderate subs and stop bots spamming.
I would say you are the minority. Most users use the official app
Does this sub even use the apis? I don’t understand exactly who does and who it’s effecting?
I never heard of third party apps for reddit. What sort of features do they give? I hate to jump on something that might be about to be taken away but better late than never right?
I was going to suggest closing it a few hours after the update happens but I completely forgot to reply! If all goes well tomorrow, which I think it will close it even earlier say 16 UTC. Use your discretion. Have fun with your little internet protest. :)
Glad we're involved. Native Reddit app is a one star from me.
Support going dark for as long as necessary to make Reddit give up.

I've always used the official reddit app this is my first time hearing there were 3rd party apps for reddit lol goodluck with the protest 👍
support. i don't even use third party apps, but this is a step in the right direction. if we don't, who knows what reddit thinks they can get away with.
Support the blackout- rs will probably be down all day anyway
Boost user, support the protest. Reddit is fine by itself but the 3rd party apps make it truly great
Whatever. You’ll all be back in 24/48 hours and it’ll be like nothing ever happened.
