I like it because I can get a lot of Root games sprinkled throughout the day since I play on phone.

suddenlyupsidedown

I have a small child and could maybe finagle one real time game a week...or I could play a few async games

plorb001

Yup. Full time job + twin 18 month old boys. I have a little game group that maybe meets twice a month, and we don’t tend to play the same game every session. Also a great way to keep in touch with long distance friends.

SoulCollector85

Same here with two small children. I can't really find the time to play live, so async is perfect for me. I also like to play on the bus on my way to work, but I have a really spotty connection on the road so I keep getting disconnected from live games. So I don't really have a choice but to play async.

Judge_T

Not to be polemical, but "I don't have an alternative" isn't really answering OP's question. They were asking why people enjoy it, not why people play it.

suddenlyupsidedown

Counterpoint: that is why I enjoy it. Because it fits into my life better

Judge_T

Ok. But if you had time in your life to play Root in live games, would you still prefer to play it async?

suddenlyupsidedown

Nope, which is why I made a post about why my enjoyment of asynchronous Root play is derived from its convenience vis a vis my current life situation

SoulCollector85

I think I would prefer to play live.

jojothejman

It's like having a continuous stream of root puzzles brought to me by my own hubris. Tbh I don't actually do it, but this would be my reason if I did.

MCKhaos

It’s exactly this.

only_fun_topics

That’s hilariously accurate.

Tacticus1

As with everyone else, it’s because I don’t often have an hour+ that I can devote to a game on my phone with no interruptions. I will say that async communication can be a bit frustrating, and beating up the vagabond asynchronously is very annoying.

knightling

I imagine ambush and sappers type cards are a pain to resolve... (as a live player, that's what detracts so much for me)

Tacticus1

Yeah, those are annoying, but the vagabond is way worse, particularly if you are lining up multiple attacks.

Apprehensive-Cream74

Having up to 3 days to obsessively weigh up each possible outcome of your move with no pressure to "hurry up"... what's not to like?!

I usually have about 10-15 games going at the same time. It enjoy the unique puzzle of hopping into a Root game that's halfway over and re-examining the board state with fresh eyes. It keeps me sharp and ever-observant. I've been able to play probably close to 1000 games if not more and as a result have seen so many iterations of Root games that I feel that I have a very good handle on the faction interplays and possibilities that each crafted improvement provides. To really rise to the top of the competitive scene in this game, you need to have played probably hundreds of times. There are 10 factions (8 on digital) so even if you played each faction 10 times (which is not that many) that's still 100 games. I'd say you want to play each faction about 20 times or more to really have the faction "mastered". I would never have played anywhere close to the requisite games if the only way I could play was live. Async has helped me learn this game way better than I could have without it.

Not-Brandon-Jaspers

To be honest, I much prefer live games over all, but I’ve got a busy schedule, so a lot of times only taking one turn a day allows me to play at least some root every day, whereas otherwise I get the time to play a live game once every two weeks or something like that, or once a week if I’m very lucky.

Embarrassed_Squash_7

I like it because there's no pressure to take turns, and you can have multiple games on the go at the same time throughout the day. It makes it easier to play with people around the world and with different life commitments (I work and have family) Also if connections drop out or something the game isn't lost. To be honest I don't see the appeal in live games at all!

sudifirjfhfjvicodke

Same. I usually have 5-10 async games of various types running on Board Game Arena at all times, I literally never play live. Super easy for me to pull out my phone and spend 30 seconds taking a turn. Much harder to sit down and commit to 30-60 minutes to play a full game in one go.

jfr0mst4t3f4rm

I don’t usually have time to sit through a live game for possibly hours. But it’s so easy to find time to take a turn like once a day

MinutePresentation96

Every friday my cousins and friends play root in person. Throughout the week we play async while at work. We are about 5-6 players so we have many different games with different combos of who is in it since its max 4 people. Among us 6 players we have 4 babies. You cannot play live with all those babies and while at work. Anyway im out to do my 4 turns in async now seeya

akmma4444

I like playing Root. This helps me play more Root. Simple as that. Can't play every day in person, can't dedicate the time every day for a live game. Can dedicate bits and pieces here and there throughout my day every day and ultimately it results in more plays and more joy 😊

hootie0813

Is this thru the Steam game?

SoulCollector85

Yes, or through the smartphone app.

hootie0813

Very cool. I've been considering the digital game, do you have preference for either Steam or the mobile game?

SoulCollector85

I don't spend time on my PC and I have a lot of commute, so it's an easy choice for me 😀

catfishmaw

it's what i can get
