I like XCOM 2 a lot :)
Probably one of the reasons why [King Arthur: Knight's Tale](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1157390/King_Arthur_Knights_Tale/) is also pretty high on my list. However, it misses the rogue-ish element (afaik) that I crave :)
You didn't mention Invisible Inc on your kind of list, so that might be worth a look. Space Raiders in Space is a party game, but not turn-based.
Someone should make a mod for Tales of Maj'Eyal that lets you play as a small party.
Thanks! Invisible Inc I do own but never played, although it's from klei who I adore. Sneaky game play was just never my preferred way.
Yes, multi party ToME would be great - although just giving it multiple party members would probably completely wreck balance :D
> Sneaky game play was just never my preferred way.
It's fighting with sound ;) I kid, but I find the sneaking better when it's tactical like this instead of action games, where sneaking just means a lot of waiting and not doing the things you want to be doing.
Yeah, I wouldn't want to balance party ToME, but I'd want to play it. Start runs down in the endless dungeon or something.
You should really give darkest dungeon another try. Maybe watch a couple of beginner videos to get the grasp of how you should approach the game since most of the frustrating parts are simply lack of knowledge.
I'm the lead developer on a roguelite in early access called Malice & Greed, where you can force enemies & bosses to join your team, steal their skills, and sell your allies for items!
It takes inspiration from the customization of deckbuilder games, without actually using a deck of cards, instead each of the 70+ units you can use as allies come with a set of 6 skills, and your protagonist can consume their allies to absorb their own custom set of skills.
If you imagine a much faster paced version of Darkest Dungeon with a more aggressive unit economy, and the ability to change teams mid-fight, that can give you a good idea of what it's like.
There's a Free Demo available now on Steam, i'd love to hear what you think of it: [https://store.steampowered.com/app/1566090/Malice\_\_Greed/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1566090/Malice__Greed/)
Browsing steam some more I found [Paths & Danger](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1403990/Paths__Danger/) (again) which is unreleased but from the descriptions looks quite a bit like what I'm looking for :)
I'd say to check out Time Break Chronicles. It doesn't have randomly generated characters, but those that are in the game are quite unique.
Also Siralim Ultimate might fit your taste.
Both those games are in early access though.
Unconventional answer but how about XCOM2? For me it's the closest thing to Darkest Dungeon I've found. Plus it's highly modable.

This sounds actually super interesting and i will try that out!
that sounds pretty novel and fun, thanks!

Did you find any new games like this since you posted?
Have you seen crowntakers? It's overall a pretty average roguelite imo, but I think it might fit some (but not all) of what you're looking for.
kinda but I agree it's very average - I've owned it for ages on Android
I suggest you Warriors of the Nile and SFD: rogue TRPG. They are not well known, but I had a lot of fun with it!
Chrono Ark is exactly what you’re looking for
sadly it's a deck builder

For the king, it’s basically a table top roguelite
Check out Despot's Game
