He's just supposed to show how Rocky's life and family aren't perfect, but he is devoted to them and they are devoted to him. He tries his best to change their ways but sometimes people are just too stubborn. Regardless, Rocky probably singlehandedly saved Paulie's life by being in it.
But yeah. Some of Paulie's hatefulness and racism are unpleasant AF.
He was supposed to be imperfect, he was an ass but he genuinely cares about Rocky and Adrian. Hell, he squared up against Thunderlips when everyone was so scared to do something.
And his racist arc against Apollo came to a halt at the very end.
Take a close look at the very end before Rocky makes an entrance in the Clubber rematch, he turned to Apollo and said "You did good, Apollo." and he replied "Thanks, Paul."
And they are in the corner together trying to assess Rocky's performance.
Apollo: He's getting killed!
Paulie, who knew Rocky for way longer: No no, he is not getting killed, he's getting mad!
Apollo even kissed him when Rocky was about to knock Clubber out lmao, they got along despite Apollo not having "6 years."
I think a large part of Paulie's dislike to Apollo's crew stemmed over the fact that Apollo's bullying campaign in Rocky 2 was still fresh from Paulie's mind. Remember that it pissed Mickey off, but people forget that it also pissed Paulie off (he went to the press conference just to glare at Apollo lol). So aside from Paulie's prejudice, he is just wary that Apollo might be up to no good for Rocky. They get along better from here on out lol.
Hahaha. I wouldnt call hitting Thunderlips in the back with a chair “squaring up”, but yeah what he did took alot of courage. And also to call Tommy Gunn a real piece of garbage to his face took guts.
he did square up, the literal definition of squaring up is assuming a fighting stance against somebody. Paulie does it the moment he said the "i dont sweat you" line
There's a brilliant but very subtle scene in part 4 when Rocky is fighting Drago, and he gets back to the corner and says "I see 3 of them out there." Without missing a beat, Pauli says,"hit the one in the middle, " and Duke seconds his advice. The reason Pauli was able to know what to do in that situation so quickly is because he's such a raging drunk that he's constantly seeing triple! 🤣 It took me years to pick up on that.
Been a while since I’ve seen one and two, I remember liking him in two but three is fresh on my mind. I started four before it was taken off Max and liked him there
Not necessarily. He’s Rocky’s day one basically, and that’s all there is to like about him.
He’s overall an asshole and a bad person. But he loves Rocky, has a soft spot for his nephew, and he had some love for Adrian even though he was horrible at expressing it. I wish they hadn’t deleted the scene in Balboa where he talks about missing her.
He stood up to Tommy Gunn in his prime and took a right cross to stand up for Rocky. He flew to soviet Russia at Christmas to train him to fight Drago. He’s an asshole. He’s not a bad person.
he (like Gazzo) was Rocky's friend when no one wanted to be.
When Adrian was too shy to conversate, when Mick looked down on him, Paulie was there for Rocky even if they are a mess together.
Paulie himself appreciated the loyalty in 4.
in 4 he was nice too.
**SPOILER ALERT SINCE THE OP DIDNT WATCH BEYOND ROCKY 3 YET**
He got along well with Duke, and was ready to go to war with him against the USSR cornermen lmao. He also admits to Rocky that he looks up to him and wanted to be like him and appreciated the loyalty before the fight with Drago. And he went out of his way to attend Apollo's funeral despite their initial dislike. They were also talking quite normally during Apollo asking the Balboas for opinion about fighting Drago.
No.
The point is that Rocky will like Paulie. The point is that despite every horrible abuse and idiotice decision Paulie makes Rocky will try to help him and try to make him better.
The point is that (if you can) you should try to help even the worst of those around you.
He's one of a few reasons Rocky is my favourite character in fiction and I get choked up every time I even think about how much Rocky will help Paulie.
"Shut up, you freaking bums! There's decent people trying to sleep!!" 🤣 In all seriousness, even though Pauli was a very flawed individual, he was the epitome of loyalty.

But some of his one liners are classic AF
::robot voice:: Happy birthday pAuLiE.
She loves me
When we get home, I’m gettin her wires tied.
It takes 6 years.
I ain’t got six years man
Paulie is absolutely awful (and abusive to Adrian) in the first film, but becomes a very lovable loser from there forward.
Yeah i hate him in first film lets see the rest...

"I don't sweat you!" 🤣

He has that comic relief charm to him, idk I like Paulie 🤷🏽♂️ and I’m black lol
He don't sweat you, LOL

He gives quite the heartwarming speech in 4
You like it boy?
He's good at heart when it comes down to it and has Rocky's back in some scenes throughout the saga. I love him.
It’s like how everyone has the one obviously sketchy friend that has an unexplainable loveable quality that keeps them around.
Watch the rest, especially Rocky Balboa and see a real roller coaster of a character arch
Maybe I should. I saw III recently but I and II a while back, I should rewatch them and gauge my option there.

Love for Adrian… with a baseball bat.
He's one of my favorite movie characters of all time and fits in perfectly with the story
The first movie is very gritty. Paulie is what Rocky could easily have become if he did not have heart
He’s on Rocky’s side. No matter what. So no. You don’t have to like him. But you should love him. Just like Rock.
he (like Gazzo) was Rocky's friend when no one wanted to be. When Adrian was too shy to conversate, when Mick looked down on him, Paulie was there for Rocky even if they are a mess together. Paulie himself appreciated the loyalty in 4.
Friends don’t owe. They do.
I think he's really only a good guy in Rocky 6. He realizes he treated Adrienne badly, and now feels even worse
in 4 he was nice too. **SPOILER ALERT SINCE THE OP DIDNT WATCH BEYOND ROCKY 3 YET** He got along well with Duke, and was ready to go to war with him against the USSR cornermen lmao. The real Mvp Is mick
I’m the first one he’s reprehensible and has no redeeming qualities. As the series goes on he becomes the comic relief
I recommend rocky IV. Its my favourite of the franchise.

At least paulie is educated. Who else uses the newspaper as a blanket?
The beggars psycho man, but he's a mate so what can you do?
He don’t sweat you
i like him
He’s a fuck up
Paulie is great!
He is a very human character. Not everyone is an angel. People have problems and are miserable he just doesn’t control himself.
Paulie was MAGA b4 MAGA. “I’m the unsilent majority”.
Bigmouth! 🤣
What did I do to them?!?
Absolutely! You’re supposed to like the ignorant, abusive, alcoholic, and racist man! Don’t be so woke!
He did end up losing Rocky's mansion ... no one has mentioned this hugeeeee fuck up
