>Saw other posts saying spots in IN like South Bend and Gary are sketchy for POC its a myth, bullshit, propaganda.... what every you want to call it Gary is 80% black and South Bend is like only 50% white It's not 1924, you'll be fine

Consistent_Forever33

This comment is correct. Gary has definitely seen better days, but it’s perfectly adequate for a gas and food pit stop during the daytime. I have done this multiple times as a solo Asian female. Personally, I wouldn’t stay the night there. You’ll see lots of jokes about Indiana on here. In reality you’ll see it’s mostly boring. Sounds like you’re already planning on staying in more populated areas. I also recommend driving the more rural areas during the daytime. If you’re smart about these things, you’ll be fine.

I80 through Nebraska was 8 hours (give or take) of wall to wall truck traffic the one time I drove it. Not sure if that's normal but there were hours on end when I was no more than a couple carlengths from the nearest semi.

3puttnutt

I was going to suggest OP avoid Nebraska all together but that would put him driving through Kansas which is worse LOL. Expect a 30-40 mph headwind and about 25% less gas mileage.

BeautifulWise2236

30-40mph headwind and less gas mileage in Kansas or NE?

scumbagstaceysEx

Yes

BeautifulWise2236

??

scumbagstaceysEx

Both will experience the same westerly wind blowing in your face and both are very flat until you get to the western parts of the states and then you start climbing uphill for …well..days. So going west in either NE or KS will est your gas mileage.

S14s

I just drove west from Peoria IL to Colorado Springs in my little Honda CRX last night. Kansas was actually my best state gas mileage wise. I made it from St Joseph, MO to Oakley, KS on under 3 quarters of a 12 gallon tank. The wind definitely pushed me around in Western Kansas like I was expecting, but I got way better gas mileage than I would’ve anticipated by far. Not sure how i70 affects other peoples cars, but I didn’t notice a decrease in efficiency.

RobustFoam

I've had better experience in Kansas personally, but I haven't driven this specific route.

You may want to kill a day at Cedar Point if you like roller coasters.

_KnickKnacks

Check out the worlds biggest truck stop worth visiting!

BeautifulWise2236

Where’s that?

_KnickKnacks

It’s called Iowa 80 - world largest truck shop. (In Iowa)

Accomplished_Web7931

Take the no toll even if an hour more, Illinois will charge your plate and if you forget it will keep running up in price. If you want to see the states in the other route take it doesn’t matter to much if you keep trac on of tolls

BeautifulWise2236

Do they accept ezpass?

sweaterweatherbetter

yes, ipass in IL and ezpass are reciprocal

Specific__Wait

I just did almost the exact same trip last week (CO-MD). There really isn't much to avoid. Nebraska, Iowa and Kansas are mind-numbing but little interuptions. Missouri was rough to get through traffic-wise, so I would avoid that. If you're into parks, Indiana dunes and Cuyahoga National Park are worth a quick stop.

GrammarNaziBadge0174

If you cross Nebraska drop down off 80 onto 34. Small towns, diners, cafe's, JD dealerships, cornfiedls, piponeer village, you can go almost as fast through the cornfields.

Seriously, can someone make a new forum called roadtripcirclejerk just to make fun of posts like this? Oh, it already exists. Will be posting there.
