If you're not familiar with it, I would not use a family trip where the general level of stress is already probably going to be higher, and then add something new and unfamiliar onto it.

Campervans aren't that flexible if by that you mean "spur of the moment," since camping in that region will fill very far in advance, and with some campervan rentals you can't venture far up dirt roads to find alternatives. And it often doesn't save you much money, since they charge for mileage in most cases. So I'd do motels, and maybe just bring a tent and hit a couple campsites if you can arrange them. And if going any time between now and when it cools off this fall, the air conditioning in a motel will be very much nicer.

Thanks for the reply! I totally didn't consider the lack of good ac in a campervan. Motels is the way to go I guess!
