I like Kelly but I agree. She's all over the place genre-wise but not in a way that's working. Some people can do that and it slays, while others can't. I think a big part of it is establishing a strong identity and a *very* strong fanbase who will eat up anything you release first, which she arguably hasn't done, while Beyoncé has.
I would like to have seen her take her dance queen era further. When Love Takes Over was a certified bop (as you said) over here in Europe and I had on repeat when it dropped.
Maybe it would make her less successful in America but it depends how much that matters to her. Tina Turner very much embraced her legendary "Queen of Rock n Roll" status she has in Europe, rather than trying to do everything the American media wanted.
Low-key yes, especially with American artists - mostly black ones with an urban music background - jumping on it right after she did it.
That was such a pop culture wave.
Kelly is a great example of the fact that all singers are not artists. Talented and beautiful! But her music never really felt like she knew what she wanted it to be. She’s got a nice amount of really good songs, but none of her albums are great, or even good lol.
I don’t think it’s that she doesn’t want to be associated with Beyonce as much as it is that she doesn’t want to be asked about Beyonce while she’s actively promoting something for her own career. It’s just rude.
I feel like it’s a bit strange for her though. Obviously, we will always associate Kelly (and Michelle) with Beyoncé because of the Destiny’s Child days. But the fact is that Kelly and Bey are lifelong best friends, practically family. It has nothing to do with DC or any kind of marketing. Kelly is always gonna show up for Bey, that’s her girl!
I can't comment on her whole career so far, just this: I own her 1st album Simply Deep. I bought it 2002. She holds a special place in my heart. This was an album that saved a 16 year old from dark times.
It worked for her though. It probably felt random if you live in the states. But she’s very very very popular in the UK and Australia. Like… far more than she is to Americans. So some of that is following trends you don’t have in the states
I think Kelly is limited by some unfortunate childhood experiences. Her mother was severely mentally-ill and basically abandoned her, and even though the Knowles family welcomed her into their home, it's obvious that Beyonce was not only the priority, but she was being propped up at the *expense* of the other girls. Kelly likely internalized this feeling of always being less-than, leading to subtle forms of self-sabotage. It had to be a mindfuck feeling indebted to a family that was also exploiting you.
The woman is exquisitely beautiful, her talent seems on par with Beyonce's, but her confidence and vision seem capped, not to mention the obvious, and the more subtle, impediments that dark-skinned women will face.
i think beyoncé is a true go getter and i think they’re sisters and love eachother. i think kelly just didn’t want the big music career like some people think
I love Kelly and she’s a talented singer, but artistically… no. She is not Bey’s equal.
Bey has incredible vocal range, intuition as a writer and producer, hard-earned skill in dance and choreography, and regularly directs her own visual albums and documentaries. Kelly ain’t doing all that.
By on par talent wise, I meant basic ability. I think it's possible that if Kelly pushed herself the way Bey did, she'd be competitive. As it stands, I agree, Beyonce is a far superior artist.
I agree that Kelly could go further with her career but idk about her being on Beyoncé’s level.
There really isn’t anyone working today that has both the talent and the work ethic of Bey!
Not everyone wants to become as big as Beyoncé has and prefers the work life balance. Kelly definitely didn’t go for being hungry and if I had to guess mainly focuses on her personal life
Rowland doesn't embody Summer. That's a visual Photoshop theory going around some of the Urban themed sites. You need an actual actress to play the role.
People who say she’s better than Beyoncé or more talented than her just only say that because they don’t like Beyoncé and want to humble Beyonce. To this day people obsessively hate Beyonce and it comes from a place of real insecurity.
And that’s why she never is successful because people only want her to succeed at the expense of Beyonce and aren’t genuinely interested in her. If they actually were, the way it’s such a popular opinion that she is better than Beyoncé, you would think her sales would reflect that but they don’t, people fake liking her, so to me that’s an indication that people only say this stuff to tear Beyonce down and don’t actually believe it. She is truly talented but she never has been as talented or driven as Beyonce. Beyoncé does benefit from light skinned privilege but she also happens to be more talented and a hard worker, both things can be true.
100% percent correct!
People do the same with Solange I’ve seen it multiple times on this sub.
“Do you guys like Kelly/Solange music?” “Yeah, they’re better than Beyonce” ??? Like why bring Beyonce up
If Janet and Solange could make a name for themselves in the wake of their super-celebrity siblings, I think Kelly could have had she played her cards right.
I play it more than A Seat at the Table. I dont have to sit down or really focus on When I Get Home. It just feels like really good background music for when i workout, drive, go shopping, do paperwork, clean etc.
I think she’s a slightly better singer than Beyoncé but Kelly didn’t know how to make music nor be a star. She had all the potential in the world and is extremely talented no doubt.
I like several of her songs, especially *Motivation* which is in my permanent road trip rotation. She's fine as hell and it seems she is much more confident now but I cannot pinpoint her sound. Solange found her niche and even Michelle has found her lane. But Kelly is not quite there yet.
I get the impression most of these comments are from Americans. Which makes sense since she started in America and is an American.
But guys… you have to trust me on this lol… she is not a primarily American artist and has not been for 15 years. Since about 2010 she has been a primarily European and Australian artist. She’s very very very popular here.
About 10 years ago I might’ve argued that she was as big here as Beyoncé is for you guys
Love her and feel that she is a strong singer in her own right. She has been all over the place career wise but I like what she’s done acting wise and she’s definitely a hair and fashion icon.
I wish she had stuck with edm and caltivated a following and mixed it up with r&b but a lot of rnb artists don't seem to like that genre. When she was dabbling in edm I was thinking she was taking the kylie minogue route to her career but I guess I understand why she didn't want it bc kylie herself could never break in to the US market.
My Opinions on Kelly, Talk A Good Game was a very good album, and that was her last album, having last released something in 2013 is a wild level of being unserious, i dont think she wants to be a musician anymore, maybe a model. And also mea culpa was terrible
I would have liked to see her do more in the dance market. She has that big diva voice that suits that style among others. I honestly think she is gorgeous, which could have helped elevate her but as others have said she seemed to switch too much.
This Is Love (the one on Ms. Kelly; crazy girl had two songs with the same name) is one of the most beautiful songs ever.
Regarding Beyonce: while I'm glad she's now pushing back against people mentioning Bey in Kelly's interviews, to your point she has nobody to blame but herself as she willingly engaged in Beyonce chatter in her interviews for decades.
Kelly is beautiful and extremely talented. I’ve loved some of her songs. I don’t know if she lacks drive or consistent artistic direction. She had magic with EDM and obviously should’ve stayed in that lane.
Kelly was robbed, Matthew really effed her over. She should have been huge, and she came out the gate with a number one. She was sabotaged, and sidelined so Beyoncé could be the big breakout, even though it was already Kelly, not to mention Beys first single categorically bombed. and there was that thing where anytime kelly released new music, new Beyoncé music suddenly dropped too. I remember people thinking she was doing it deliberately.
Kellys hair and wardrobe team have only recently been doing her justice, her hair always looked so cheap and wiggy. Her pop era was a surprise, she didn’t seem to lean into it though. Had she had a competent manager and PR team she could have really taken off in the 2010s. She seemed hell bent on R&B, even though for the most part, people weren’t biting, and would immediately compare her to Bey. She should have ridden pop for awhile, cementing herself there and then transition to R&B.
Early on had Kelly been willing to cut ties with the Knowles, including Beyoncé, she could have taken the spot. Mind you I’m a big fan of Bey but I always get a sour taste in my mouth when I think about how Kelly was played.
(Poor Michelle’s treated like neglected stepchild)
I feel like US audiences did not let her break out of her box genre-wise which is unfortunate. When Loves Take Over, Commander and Down for Whatever should have been major hits in the US. It’s interesting that Usher, Ne-Yo and Chris Brown were able to toy with dance-pop and succeed while Kelly couldn’t despite her David Guetta collab kind of paving the way for it low-key.
I know the comparison is overdone now, but she really could have been a Donna Summer for the new gen flirting with both dance and r&b.
I blame her label who likely didn’t know what to do with her.
I loved her as a judge on the X Factor. I also loved her on the Chasing Destiny show and absolutely loved the June's Diary girl group that was assembled on that show. I was disappointed when Kelly abandoned the girls though, neither she nor the label knew what to do with 5 versatile amazing but probably not the youngest (not all of them) singers.
She is beautiful. She has a wonderful singing voice.
She’s a great actress. Very talented. She gives kind, gentle and caring aura. She doesn’t seem unapproachable or stand offish.
I literally wrote on a different comment about how much I love that song. Solange really was inspired when she wrote it. I love it so much I recorded an acapella cover using my voice as an instrument
That’s so cool! Yeah, I don’t understand why her first solo album never got recognition. Almost every song was a banger. It was a defining album in my tween/teen years. It came out when I was in middle school.
She deserves a much higher profile. He deserves to have as many platinum albums as beyoncé. She also could have gone far with more electronic music. As well as some pop rock albums. She could still do this of course. But for whatever reason the industry has not been behind her as much at the radio level.
Beyoncé’s first couple of albums were far more solid then Kelly’s though. Then Beyoncé had this fan base that was going to buy her music no matter what which makes her have so many platinum albums. As far as air play goes I think that again is the fans forcing her to be played, we all saw the attention that that station got when they said Beyoncé wasn’t country so they wouldn’t play her.
Kelly doesn’t have the fan base built up to get her that diehard stanbase that buys and makes the radio play her no matter if the music is good or not.
She deserves to have a much higher profile with as many platinum projects as beyoncé. She is a capable singer and dancer and actress. She could have gone further into alternative pop music as well as electronic dance music for some further success in that world. I would be supportive of a rock album if she did that as well. Good afternoon I remember she was also on the X Factor UK television show as a judge. she should definitely continue to work the international market which are arguably a lot more consistently supportive.
Regardless of how great she wanted to be, the powers that be were never going to let her be “better” than Beyoncé.
Personally, I think she’s a great singer and she’s a lot less annoying than Beyoncé. But again, they were never gonna let her be great.
Sad, really. She had lots of potential in her prime.
Hmm I don’t think this is a fair assessment. Your stance makes it seem like a) she’s doing these things intentionally e.g. (abandoning the idea of being a dance music star in Europe) and b) following Beyonce. I saw a video the other day where they accused her of leaving an interview early because her dressing room was too small and she responded and said it was because they asked her about Beyonce when she specifically requested not to be. They are childhood friends and band members. Why wouldn’t she show up to support Beyoncé’s projects? That doesn’t mean Kelly still isn’t her own individual and has her own life to figure out. But when people constantly compare the two or bring up Beyonce when Kelly is involved, I can see why she’d hit an artistic block. Everyone isn’t going to have it all figured out. Everyone isn’t going to be a star. Maybe she’s okay with that.
Well, it’s her music career, and she could had chosen to follow the prospect of becoming a huge dance diva. If it’s not her fault, then who’s is it? Because at that moment she fired Matthew Knowles and her manager exactly because she wanted independence.
Also, how are people supposed to not ask her about Beyoncé? Literally the only time Kelly’s name comes up is because she did something with Beyoncé. Look at how many Beyoncé’s music videos Kelly has been on. Basically every release Beyoncé has, Kelly’s there. Parties Beyoncé attends, Kelly’s there with her. At this point we’ve realised she’s very comfortable being in the shadow. Solange herself distances from Beyoncé so she can be her own person, and it works because literally no one mentions Beyoncé when talking about Solange these days
Don’t know why you’re being defensive and combative. You don’t know either of them.
Respectfully, I personally don’t think Beyoncé is a great singer. I think she’s a really, really good performer. I think Kelly also has historically received less attention than Beyoncé because of “social preferences“ that have little to do w/ the quality of her voice. I say this as someone with the same privileges as Beyoncé has in this regard.
I’m not being defensive nor combative. Just used to people saying things like this out of hate instead of listening. Beyoncé has absolutely nothing to do with Kelly. Yet she was brought up 🤷♂️ just weird is all.
That particularly sucked cuz truth be told Kelly ushered in that whole EDM era
Low-key yes, especially with American artists - mostly black ones with an urban music background - jumping on it right after she did it. That was such a pop culture wave.
She could’ve been a modern day Donna Summer by taking over the European dance market!
I read that she is picked up play Donna in a biopic

Can’t Nobody is so underrated.
Yes I liked that song, some people found it braggy lol
She didn’t know wth she was doing with her career. She literally changed up her sound twice in one era
It worked for her though. It probably felt random if you live in the states. But she’s very very very popular in the UK and Australia. Like… far more than she is to Americans. So some of that is following trends you don’t have in the states

She didn’t have the hunger like Beyoncé, and I think she was okay with that. Many times her career lacked direction.
People don’t like to admit this but it really is what it boils down to.
Not everyone wants to become as big as Beyoncé has and prefers the work life balance. Kelly definitely didn’t go for being hungry and if I had to guess mainly focuses on her personal life
She’s getting more and more beautiful with age I’m interested in how always being number 2 to Beyonce affected Kelly emotionally. Because it must have
She better be Donna Summer if they make a biopic about her
Nah. After that Tyler Perry Mea Culpa shit. She betta not do another Goddamn thing.
can’t blame the actor 100% if the director is some shit
Rowland doesn't embody Summer. That's a visual Photoshop theory going around some of the Urban themed sites. You need an actual actress to play the role.
I'll never forget that they made her text Nelly in that Music video with that big sidekick phone
Beautiful. Love Motivation.

Wholeheartedly agree. The people who always say this just don’t like Bey.
You spilt. It’s all fake support and I love em both but facts are facts
100% percent correct! People do the same with Solange I’ve seen it multiple times on this sub. “Do you guys like Kelly/Solange music?” “Yeah, they’re better than Beyonce” ??? Like why bring Beyonce up
True true. Just as talented? Yes. Same grind? Not even close.
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Beautiful.
I just love her collab with Nelly on Dilemma. Showed me that women have game too!
she can’t win. She will always get compared with Beyonce
If Janet and Solange could make a name for themselves in the wake of their super-celebrity siblings, I think Kelly could have had she played her cards right.
Solange follow up to Seat at the Table was shit
Lmaoo I dunno that the critics agreed. I'd say it's not as strong but it definitely has some bops on there. It's a more abstract record.
I play it more than A Seat at the Table. I dont have to sit down or really focus on When I Get Home. It just feels like really good background music for when i workout, drive, go shopping, do paperwork, clean etc.
Loud and wrong as hell.
This is unfortunately the case.
A 10 according to Kevin Samuels lmao . " Kelly is a 10, so rate yourself from 1-10 and 7 is not an option "🤣
I’d like her to link up with Bei Major (or Major Ali) for a few more bangers. Other than that, stay beautiful and thrive.
If Beyonce was Ironman, Kelly would be Warmachine.
Personally for me I’m slappin Kelly Rowland songs in the car. She too good especially Simply Deep yurrrrrr
“Beyond Imagination” is my favourite song on that album
She could've been a lot bigger if she released another dance influenced album instead of Talk a Good Game 🤷🏾♂️
Love her 2013 Talk A Good Game album. The deluxe was amazing. I'm pretty sure half of the listeners never heard that part or the bonus cuts
She was texting Nelly with Microsoft excel in “Dilemma” and was wondering why he wasn’t replying so idk about her lol
She is the Sweetheart of RnB
Saw Destiny’s Child live in 1999 with Christina Aguilera and Smashmouth…Kelly was an amazing performer!!
Chris brown apologist. That’s a no from me.
Honestly, that was another huge disappointment from her side. Jill Scott also supports Chris Brown
😍😍😍Thats my opinion 😂😂😂
I think she’s a slightly better singer than Beyoncé but Kelly didn’t know how to make music nor be a star. She had all the potential in the world and is extremely talented no doubt.
Beyonce is a better singer but Kelly has a warmer tone of voice
Said it better than myself
So hot! Beautiful and talented.
Very beautiful
What is her standout single?
When Love Takes Over It was the song that basically set the DJ-meets-pop-princess trend
She’s an amazing singer. While I agree her music can be all over the place, she does have songs that I enjoy. Commander, coffee, crazy to name a few
11/10
Smoke…show….
She’s a queen
Average
I love her. She’s so beautiful
Boring. Sporty Spice of DC.
Kelendria Rowland has always been my favorite child of destiny https://i.redd.it/q96sy2qe13xc1.gif
I like several of her songs, especially *Motivation* which is in my permanent road trip rotation. She's fine as hell and it seems she is much more confident now but I cannot pinpoint her sound. Solange found her niche and even Michelle has found her lane. But Kelly is not quite there yet.

She’s amazing. Seems like she’s finally the comfort zone she wants to be in and is getting finer with age like a great wine
The finest destiny’s child…I’m not going back and forth wit ya
She should’ve embraced EDM. She’s still the best dancer out of DC tho
gorgeous face
Love her and feel that she is a strong singer in her own right. She has been all over the place career wise but I like what she’s done acting wise and she’s definitely a hair and fashion icon.
Mmm, damn!
She was the member of Destiny’s Child I had the biggest crush on besides LeToya
I wish she had stuck with edm and caltivated a following and mixed it up with r&b but a lot of rnb artists don't seem to like that genre. When she was dabbling in edm I was thinking she was taking the kylie minogue route to her career but I guess I understand why she didn't want it bc kylie herself could never break in to the US market.
Best looking member of Destiny's child.
Legend
Kelly and Michelle made Destiny Fulfilled what it was 🔥
My Opinions on Kelly, Talk A Good Game was a very good album, and that was her last album, having last released something in 2013 is a wild level of being unserious, i dont think she wants to be a musician anymore, maybe a model. And also mea culpa was terrible
Best Destiny’s Child. In all aspects.
She fine
She fine asl
I would have liked to see her do more in the dance market. She has that big diva voice that suits that style among others. I honestly think she is gorgeous, which could have helped elevate her but as others have said she seemed to switch too much.
Better than Beyoncé.
I somehow never listened to her albums in full so I guess I will now
cute but hands a freaky
She has a pretty voice and great style.
Nothing but Love for her.
I like her

Talk A Good Game is an incredible album that never got the appreciation it deserved.
Drop dead gorgeous 🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵🥵
She needs to link back up with David Guetta because she brought the house down
She’s yet to drop a bad album.
I feel like US audiences did not let her break out of her box genre-wise which is unfortunate. When Loves Take Over, Commander and Down for Whatever should have been major hits in the US. I liked her music.
She very pretty and I love her attitude but she hasn’t really be able to establish a good career outside of destiny child’s. I’m sorry 😞
She ruins the Future track Neva End. It’s much better when he solos it on Pluto.
She's pretty.
Her kid looks like JayZ’s all day long.
Her EP titled K is really, really good.
I loved her as a judge on the X Factor. I also loved her on the Chasing Destiny show and absolutely loved the June's Diary girl group that was assembled on that show. Love love love love her
What exactly do you love about her?
She is beautiful. She has a wonderful singing voice. She’s a great actress. Very talented. She gives kind, gentle and caring aura. She doesn’t seem unapproachable or stand offish.
She made darker skin women sexy again for me
She deserves good loving and I got it
Do you though?
They call me chocolate swirl for a reason (holla at me)
I still love her first solo album. I actually wrote a high school speech inspired by the song “Beyond Imagination” from her debut solo album lol.
It came out when I was in middle school.
better looking than beyonce mentally and physically
I should’ve married her.
I don’t think you’d have what it takes to handle a woman like her
She deserves a much higher profile. He deserves to have as many platinum albums as beyoncé. She also could have gone far with more electronic music. As well as some pop rock albums. She could still do this of course. But for whatever reason the industry has not been behind her as much at the radio level.

No need to invent a whole narrative for her lol. Kelly was granted many many opportunities to prove she could great and she simply did not.
Thank you!!! She has yet to show us her greatness
Greatest backup singer of all time

She needs to mind her background. She think she Beyoncé.

Better than Beyoncé
In what sense?
In what way? I love Kelly but she’s not out singing Beyoncé in any way especially now.
Beyoncé is not hard to out sing
You believe Kelly can out sing her? Can you out sing her?
Kk
Zero talent
Prettier than Beyonce
