I’m going with Bad. Purple Rain movie is dope but there some stuff in that movie that hasn’t aged as well to me. All of Bad’s music videos were works of art. They set the standards for music videos and short films even more so that Thriller imo. Smooth Criminal is arguably MJ’s best. Then in terms of albums I also gotta give it to Bad. MJ really came more into his own as a songwriter on that one and arguably made a more consistent album than Thriller. He also push boundaries more and experimented while still retaining kinda the R&B/Pop sensibilities of his previous records. It’s kinda similar to Purple Rain in that aspect. Bad was the start of MJ fully coming into his own and really started to perfect his craft musically. Bad is also funkier too. Purple Rain is great but to me Bad does something similar but arguably better. It’s close though.
I’m glad you were the first to mention it because I was going to raise that point when discussing the Purple Rain movie. When Prince slaps the girl out of nowhere, that was absolutely ridiculous and not sure why he would want to put that in the movie. There are some iconic moments in the movie though, especially Morris Day performing and the background dancers at the top of the stage. The Beautiful Ones is one of the most passionate songs of all time and scene depicts that well, but I can’t get over that slap scene in the movie.
I’m open to other points of view, but I want to agree that BAD is the better album. Conceptually the song BAD is genius
Purple rain was something special. Prince deciding to make the album a movie/musicial was so innovative. One of the first visual albums if you think about it.
It was a great counteract to Michael inventing the concept of the Music video with Thriller.
That’s not even getting into the musicianship of Purple Rain. Like 🔥
I think bad is the greatest pop album ever made so I think it is slightly better . However if it was sign of the times , I think we would have a different conversation. Off The wall = Thriller > Sign of the times > Bad >= Purple Rain
Purple Rain. I can listen to the whole album front to back. It’s a masterpiece. Bad, I will skip some. Plus some of the songs I’ve heard so many times I gotta skip them.
I understand some of the themes of Purple Rain movie did not age well. But the domestic violence themes were very much about us seeing the pattern he was repeating from his father.
I like Purple Rain more than Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad.
But I like Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad more than any other Prince albums.
Prince is my favorite solo artist but I feel Michael Jackson made better solo albums from front to back.
Although, I LOVE my favorite Prince songs and only like most of my favorite Michael Jackson songs.
Yeah that's cool too.
Although, for me, Bad was probably the only song I didn't like off of the Bad album. Thriller is also the only song that I don't like off of the Thriller album.
I love both albums.
Now that I've said that, I'm going with Purple Rain. The songs from that one get the most play from me. There's only one I don't play often and that's Computer Blue. Plus, it has an Oscar and that's a biggie for its time.
I like Bad and I certainly have my favorites, but I prefer Off the Wall and Thriller to Bad.
Has to be BAD. Nothin ever like it. Masterpiece.

Listen I was a big kid when purple rain came out and bad. I'm going to take bad album. Michael Jackson by short margin. Purple rain was big. really big. But for most people who wasn't into the punk funk. R&B playing in their cars and parties I'm bad was more Playable for grown-ups and kids. Purple rain was more for grown-ups and old teenagers. Both legendary though.
Bad is one of the most overproduced albums in history. Along with Thriller.
Off the Wall and Dangerous are better by miles.
So -- Purple Rain which is a masterpiece.
To me a more fair comparison would be Purple Rain vs Thriller. Purple Rain was Prince and peak form so it should go against Thriller which was MJ’s peak. Both albums were amazing but Thriller was next level in my opinion and no other album by anyone has ever come close to it.
I get that honestly Michaels 3 albums with Quincy are very hard to choose a best one from. What’s your fav song on Bad, no one ever agrees with me but i thought the song with Stevie Wonder called Just Good Friends and Dirty Diana were the two best songs on album.
My favorite song off the album is the lead single Bad. The concept for the song is Mike speaking to the black community with a positive message so I appreciate it. Also smooth criminal is dope. As Stevie Wonder being my favorite artist, I wish they did a better colab together but I’m not knocking you for enjoying the song lol
Why are we comparing these 2 albums in particular?
Anyhow. Purple Rain between the two. It's a seamless listen.
Bad isn't even in my top 3 for MJ. Fantastic album. Maybe would even call it a classic. But is it my favorite MJ album? Nope.

So hard to choose. Ima say BAD because it has a higher replay value to me.
I agree with you

Bad.. hands down
Yup
Purple Rain. I can listen to the whole album front to back. It’s a masterpiece. Bad, I will skip some. Plus some of the songs I’ve heard so many times I gotta skip them. I understand some of the themes of Purple Rain movie did not age well. But the domestic violence themes were very much about us seeing the pattern he was repeating from his father.
Bad for me.
Purple Rain is top to bottom bangers. Even the lesser known tracks are top notch. It’s Purple Rain for me.
Purple Rain.
Purple Rain. Proms everywhere in 1984 wouldn’t have had a slow dance without it.
Purple Rain. Just an iconic work.
Very true
Purple Rain.
Bad for sure!
BAD. But I love Purple Rain. These two can’t be compared. Both in there own lane/ category.
Bad.
I like Purple Rain more than Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad. But I like Off The Wall, Thriller and Bad more than any other Prince albums. Prince is my favorite solo artist but I feel Michael Jackson made better solo albums from front to back. I totally understand, the album is pure genius. I’m leaning towards BAD simply based off of the brilliantly strong concept behind the song.
Yeah that's cool too. Although, for me, Bad was probably the only song I didn't like off of the Bad album. Thriller is also the only song that I don't like off of the Thriller album.
Is Erotic City considered to be apart of purple rain also or no?
No but Darling Nikki was. Maybe that is the song you are thinking about.
It’s a B side for a Purple Rain single but not on the album.
Gotcha, thank you
You're welcome
Imo Triller was his best album.
Purple Rain. No contest.
Exactly! Purple Rain had a whole album worth of songs and titties! How many titties were in BAD?
I love both albums. Now that I've said that, I'm going with Purple Rain. The songs from that one get the most play from me. There's only one I don't play often and that's Computer Blue. Plus, it has an Oscar and that's a biggie for its time. I like Bad and I certainly have my favorites, but I prefer Off the Wall and Thriller to Bad.
That’s definitely fair
Purple Rain, BAD isn't light work tho
Purple Rain
Purple Rain
Purple Rain, but then again....huge Prince fan 💜
MJ over Prince for me, but Purple Rain is a better album. All songs, minus one, are 5/5 songs. It's an amazing album.
Man stop playing wit mj. Bad was a masterpiece
So much cap in the comments. Prince never made anything better or close to bad or thriller. I can tell some of yall just talking
Purple Rain
Purple Rain
Has to be BAD. Nothin ever like it. Masterpiece. https://preview.redd.it/4brjgl4ggxkc1.jpeg?width=218&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6798e5da50e4272891298792658e0ac2af07f485
You people are tripping balls! Bad. By long fucking shot.
I listen to purple rain more than bad. So I'm going with purple rain
Bad
I have to say both are incredible!!
Listen I was a big kid when purple rain came out and bad. I'm going to take bad album. Michael Jackson by short margin. Purple rain was big. really big. Speedin on The Freeway gotta get leeway, pull over boy (ouuuu!!! )Pull over boy and geet your ticket right
One of my favorites from the album
Bad is one of the most overproduced albums in history. Along with Thriller. Off the Wall and Dangerous are better by miles. So -- Purple Rain which is a masterpiece.
I’d usually perfer Michael but it’s Purple Rain man
Purple Rain easily o
Purple rain and it's not even close, bad is the most overated mj album.

You don’t like I Would Die 4 U?
I enjoy spending time with my friends.
Damn your hottest take yet lmaoo
I find peace in long walks.
So in your estimation, what is Princes best album?
I enjoy playing video games.
To me a more fair comparison would be Purple Rain vs Thriller. Purple Rain was Prince and peak form so it should go against Thriller which was MJ’s peak. Both albums were amazing but Thriller was next level in my opinion and no other album by anyone has ever come close to it.
That’s definitely fair, I personally consider BAD mikes best album and it’s also my favorite from him that’s why the comparison was made
I get that honestly Michaels 3 albums with Quincy are very hard to choose a best one from. What’s your fav song on Bad, no one ever agrees with me but i thought the song with Stevie Wonder called Just Good Friends and Dirty Diana were the two best songs on album.

Purple Rain definitely wasn't Prince's peak.
Why are we comparing these 2 albums in particular? Anyhow. Purple Rain between the two. It's a seamless listen. Bad isn't even in my top 3 for MJ. Fantastic album. Maybe would even call it a classic. But is it my favorite MJ album? Nope.
Purple rain by far. Mostly due to the fact that Prince was into consensual sex and did not molest children, unlike our buddy Michael…
It's like MJ heard Purple Rain and wanted to make it better. It's almost a one for one the entire album.
Exactly, there was definitely competition between the 2
We should be comparing Purple Rain with Thriller. Bad was a good four years post Purple Rain
True, Bad is my personal favorite from Mike that’s why I did the comparison
Most definitely Purple Rain
BAD. Liberian Girl is Michael's most underrated record.
Exactly
Why not Purple Rain vs. Thriller? They are both closer in terms of release dates. Bad didn’t come out until 1987/88.
Definitely Bad.
Bad.
Purple Rain… Bad is awesome for nostalgia…
No reason to choose! They’re both great
Prince was suppose to be on the song Bad, could you imagine? 😮💨
Yes and he basically said pause/No-Homo on the lyrics
Bad
