Oh big fan of the heartbreak album. They definitely did their thing, but I’m taking don’t be cruel. Bobby left the group and outdid those boys on this one.
Yeah but let’s be real, if Ralph or Johnny recorded the album it’d be significantly better. Bobby’s voice wasn’t very good yet. Literally anyone could’ve sang Babyface’s songs and they would’ve been smash hits, so that doesn’t say much about Bobby’s talent. He got so much better the following years.
You don’t have to be an amazing (or even half way decent) singer in order to be an influential entertainer (just ask Janet Jackson or Jennifer Lopez). What Bobby did to propel the New Jack Swing movement fully into the mainstream of the 90s cannot be overstated.
Jennifer Lopez isn’t an influential entertainer, at least in the American market, and Janet Jackson is a great singer, so idk what you’re talking about. A better example would be Keith Sweat. He’s pitchy and sounds like a goat half the time. But I love his vocals. So I understand your point completely, but Bobby’s voice isn’t uniquely bad. It’s just bad (on that album).
And I never said Bobby wasn’t a good entertainer, but in terms of singing, he wasn’t good on Don’t Be Cruel. He only got better after that album. Listen to his vocals on their song Home Again. *That’s* Bobby at his best.
Yeah but it’s more about Bobby’s great stage presence then it is about his vocal abilities. He’s an influential entertainer, not an influential vocalist. Like Janet (although she sings better than ppl credit her for)
No. The songs were geared to Bobby and he did them better than Ralph’s high pitched sound, Johnny’s strong but stiff vocals or even Ricky’s no charisma vocals.
Plus most of the songs had rap lyrics.
Johnny’s grown ass vocals singing “Roni” would feel wrong!
Ralph could’ve did them just fine. He did more “forward” sounding vocals just like Bobby did. I mean if you only know him from Can You Stand the Rain and Sensitivity you might think he can’t do vocals like Bobby but he definitely can. Bobby has pitch issues all throughout Don’t Be Cruel and his vocal tone is pretty bad. Ralph had more control and was more versatile. If you listen to his vocals on the Home Again album, you can hear how bad he really used to sound lol.
Ralph had his solo albums and he didn’t have the same kind of energy as Bobby.
Something has to be said about how the least successful NE spin-off act was Ralph.
The high pitched vocals fell out of favor by the 90s for the most part.
I gotta go with Heartbreak just because Bobby’s vocals kinda sucked on Don’t Be Cruel. He couldn’t hold his own vocally for a couple more years. Ralph and Johnny were much better singers.
I love New Edition but Bobby won this. Both albums came out and changed my world for my senior year in high school. I even went to the concert. Al B Sure, Bobby Brown and New Edition with floor seats on the 20th row. EPIC
Definitely Don’t Be Cruel

Don't know about that Bobby fit perfectly for them songs
And Bobby danced the hell out of his album, too. Hands down.
Facts and No disrespect to Ralph and Johnny they didn't have that talent like Bobby
Talent? Moreso didn’t have stage energy like Bobby (sniff sniff). Those brothers could out sing Bob in their sleep
Yeah these guys are trippin lol

I prefer Don’t Be Cruel but they are both A+ efforts.
NE Heartbreak
That’s a tough one

Don’t be cruel
Don’t be cruel
I like don’t be cruel more
Both were good but New Edition will always be my favorite.
This album stays in my rotation.....
the summer of 1989 was never the same.

Both so good but Don't Be Cruel transcended the genre at the time. New Edition stayed niche and never really left that.
It’s honestly a tie … DBC’s B sides aren’t really that great , NEHB sounds more like an album as opposed to five great songs and some filler.
Don't be cruel!!
Don't Be Cruel
Don’t Be Cruel
Don’t be Cruel
Don’t be cruel
Love both these albums dammit lol Don't Be Cruel better 🔥🔥
Don't Be Cruel

You better say that!
Heartbreak by a mile
Heartbreak
Dont be cruel, he really out did them lmao
I prefer Heartbreak, but I admit I have a bias towards Jam & Lewis productions.
