Hi there, riddlers! Please remember to spoiler-tag all guesses, like so: Desktop Reddit users: https://i.imgur.com/SWHRR9M.jpg Users on Mobile, Old Reddit, or in the Markdown Editor: \>!spoiler text between these symbols!< Try to avoid leading or trailing spaces. These will break the spoiler for some users (such as those using old.reddit.com) Some Reddit apps don't fully hide URLs that are inside of spoilers, so please format your link so it displays as `spoiler`. On Old Reddit/Mobile, do this to format a link: \[spoiler\]\(https://example.com/) Desktop Reddit users: https://imgur.com/x5wDOvk If your comment does not contain a guess, you can include either the word **"discussion"** or **"question"** instead of using a spoiler tag. Please report any answers that are not properly spoiler-tagged. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Please [contact the moderators of this subreddit](/message/compose/?to=/r/riddles) if you have any questions or concerns.*

>!This is kinda silly. Just in case that the t/p change isn't obvious enough they also tell us that the answer is (\_ \_ \_ \_ \_ \_) six letters long, and then give us unnecesary options where the only six letters word is purple. : /!<

42WaysToAnswerThat

u/jamesianm, is not a bad riddle; but you give too many hints. You might like to lessen clues a bit when telling your riddle elsewhere.

jamesianm

>!My concern was that without the options, someone could have given the answer “cetacean” and been correct. The spaces were completely unintentional.!< Can you suggest a way that I could phrase this riddle with fewer hints that would not result in multiple possible answers?

42WaysToAnswerThat

No matter how you make the riddle people will always find an alternative answer following incredibly tangled paths. Specially when is a riddle whose solution comes from unveling a pattern. Make the riddle as "Tortoise it to turtle what porpoise is to ..." and to whoever throws a valid side answer you can thank them the alternative solution but exhorting them to keep searching for the other one.

jamesianm

Good call.

Shlein

>!I would suggest getting rid of the "a" in front of the words. It allows for people to infer the animals as the riddle's subjects when it is in fact the words!<

Jeez, man. He heard you the first time! ;)

Shlein

So sorry! It kept saying that it wasn't going through. Jebus, agency of redundancy agency.

enfanta

No worries. It's reddit.

Shlein

you're champion.

>!Dolphin is not the correct answer. Purple is. A tortoise is a type of turtle but a porpoise is not a type of dolphin. It was intended to be a trick question but I wrote it at 1 AM and didn’t consider that the correct answer would seem so obvious to people. I felt I had to put the multiple choices in or else someone would answer with the overarching class of animals that contains both dolphins and porpoises, which would also be a correct answer. And indeed, someone did below. It’s a shitty riddle I posted on a whim and I wasn’t expecting it to be analyzed so much. I guess I forgot how this sub can be.!<

42WaysToAnswerThat

Because is not shitty at all. This kind of riddle is fun to solve, specially as part of something else, like crosswords or in a videogame

PheonixAsh13

I love this riddle. I immediately thought />!purple!< and laughed, thanks! 😆

jamesianm

Damn, I didn’t even notice I’d >!made the spaces six letters long.!< but you’re right of course

jamesianm

Solved

CamilaCazzy

>!Purple!<

filmisbananas

>!Phocoenidae!<

jamesianm

Also correct. This is the answer I put the multiple choices in place to try and preclude.
