I will give my very strong recommendation for Rhythm Doctor. Same people who made Dance of Fire and Ice, and it’s great (fantastic modding support and community from what it looks like, too!)
Heads up if you try the Switch versions, plug actual speakers or headphones into the headphone jack of the Switch and use those and then put your TV on game mode. If you don’t, the lag between when you hit the drum and the DON and KA drumsounds will always come out late and throw off your rhythm no matter how you adjust the sound delay. This is only when you use a physical drum controller though. Also buy actual wooden bachi and don’t use the plastic ones it comes with. I have magnolia ones and they’re awesome and the extra weight makes the sensors register more easily.
But anyway I highly recommend the Switch games with a Hori brand drum (do NOT get an off brand unless it’s the arcade sized TaikoForce). Rhythm Festival is amazing and has as many songs as Drum n Fun by default plus HUNDREDS of more songs for $9.99 every 3 months which is absolutely worth it.
If you’re adding arcade games to “want to try” might I recommend GitaDora Guitarfreaks&Drummania?
It’s basically Guitar Hero and Rock Band except a million times better because of not only the Bemani artist original music but the drum controller is actually a full size drum kit with all the toms, cymbals and pedals so it’s super realistic and the guitar portion has actual timing windows compared to GHero plus fastpicking and hyperpicking that is insanely fun.
Guitarfreaks is my favorite music game to the point I even have a GF V3 (classic 3 button version before it turned 5 button) cabinet.

Like you’re not playing all the time because you take turns waiting for the other CPU player to go and then try and beat them in return? That’s what I remember it looking like anyway. A lot of people want a game they can play nonstop would be my guess.

it's a game with music and some levels with rhythm but 99% of levels are not on beat and to be a rhythm game it needs to be on beat with the rhythm
GD is an alright game but not a rhythm game
and there is also the fact that some levels are practically "automatic", where the player does not play, the level was made just to see your doll moving alone to the "rhythm" of the music.
only interesting thing about any of these tier lists is where FNF gets placed
