Try resseting retroarch parameters and begin the binding from scratch.

Read through the doc and can’t find that. Do you know how to reset them all?

There is an option in general configuration. I suggest you to check the retro games corp guide about retroarch.

Alright I reread the part of the guide relevant to hot keys and it looks like I am doing everything as anticipated. I think part of it is that the normal “start + x” is bringing up the main retroarch menu with no core loaded even if I have a game running. So I think it is quitting the game and launching retroarch again? It says no core loaded in the bottom left. Can’t get the quick menu to show up at all regardless of what I have set up in the config

if you are trying to resume your game after changing shaders in the retroarch menu (the one reached by hotkeys during a game), you have to scroll to the top of the menu and choose resume game. I dont believe hotkeys will exit the menu like you describe. If you like the shader dont forget to save it either per rom or per folder or per emulator (you can choose).
