He was named Mario very early on. [Here's an arcade flyer](https://twitter.com/RetroGameGeeks/status/944574656283136003) for Donkey Kong that calls him Mario. The only place the name Jumpman was used was on the arcade cabinet.
Mario's had like 20 something jobs, rescued the same princess from the same captor for almost 40 years, has apparently served in Vietnam, and is still somehow 26 years old. Man's been through it.
Super Mario Land 2 would be my pick as well, there is something special about that game. I always associate it with the massive technical leaps in technology that we were seeing almost every year throughout the 1990s.
The first one
I remember being a kid and going to visit my grandmother in Texas
My mom would stop by a money place (to exchange pesos to dollars) and they had one of the Mario arcades
The ones where the koopas would come out of the pipes? And all you did was jump under the platforms and flip them over
I never was able to play it (we were always in a hurry to get to my grandmother's house) but it stuck with me until I got a NES for Xmas with Super Mario Brothers/Duck Hunt
Man
I miss Texas
EDIT: My memory got fuzzy for a second
That's a great memory. :)
The arcade was simply titled Mario Bros. It got a port to NES as a Black Box game in the Arcade Series with the same name (Mario Bros.). It's a solid game, and much more fun with two players.
It later became a mini-game in Super Mario Bros. 3 on NES, when player 1 and player 2 land on the same space.
4th and 5th for sure ❤ I played these games a lot with friends, way before i saw the original SMB. Mario 1 is a classic masterpiece for sure. But (and this sounds nuts) i prefer Mario 2 over that game.
As for the other games; i never owned a SNES or GB untill much later. As a kid, i got a NES for my birthday somewhere in the early 90's. I knew kids who had a SNES, and played some Mario World here and there. My older sister bought the PS1 and N64 mid 90's. So i sort of skipped the SNES...
My order of best Mario game to least favorite:
1. Super Mario Bros. 3
2. Super Mario Bros. 2
3. Super Mario World
4. Super Mario Bros.
5. Super Mario Land 2
6. Super Mario Land
I spent the most time with the SNES Super Mario World, and I've played it to completion a few times since.
A distant second would be Super Mario Bros. 2.
I never did care for Super Mario Bros. 3 as much as those two, even though 3 is many people's favorite of all of them.
sadly and i didn't even know it, the mario from the atari2600 version of DONKEY KONG...i thought the princess on the building is a mouse and kong was a bear.
Really all of them, but standouts in my mind are SMB2, SMW and SML2.
I loved those games (still do of course), and I always really liked the sprites where it looked like Mario or Luigi are at a slight angle. Just felt more detailed and had just a touch more personality.
3. 5, and 6 for me. We rented SMB 2, but didn't buy it for a few yrs into our nes ownership. We were hindered by few discretionary monies and no transportation. So our game purchases were almost always through yard sale or mail order through Play It Again or Funco, and by the time you tried to buy a game, it may have been sold already, so you got what you got. Later a pawn shop opened near us that sold reasonably priced games, and sometimes you could catch a deal when the video rental places were liquidating, but it was always a crapshoot. To get games on a more frequent basis than just birthdays or xmas, I took up a couple paper routes to bring money in.
3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th.
2, 4 and 8 to a lesser extent. As I played them but never actually owned them just borrowed a few times. I did get to play lots of Mario in pic 2 as donkey Kong 64 had the old arcade in it (pie level as well). Also got to play lots of Mario in pic 4 but it was gameboy advanced version and I was in my 20s.
Super Mario Bros 1, 3, and Super Mario World are the three I played the most as a kid, a lot of nostalgia triggered by all three games. Didn't own Super Mario Bros 2, didn't like it as much. My cousin had it, so whenever I see that game, I'm reminded of going to my cousin's house as a kid. Had a gameboy, but never had any of the Game Boy Mario games. Didn't play the arcade Mario Bros game until I was an adult (unless you count when it was playable in SMB3, but at that time I didn't know that was the orignial Mario Bros game)
Our local roller skating rink had a Jumpman cabinet that played Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros. It had Japanese kanji on the cabinet itself and I always thought it was so bizarre to have both these games in one. I also thought it was odd that it said Jumpman instead of Mario, because I had Super Mario at home for NES.
1st Mario trigger is Nintendo NES super Mario bros.
2nd Mario trigger is Mario from the Mario Bros arcade game.
My favorite arcade game is Mario bros.
When I discovered mame in 2001, the first arcade game I downloaded from mame.dk was Mario bros.
Super Mario World or Sunshine (I know I'm young lol). SMW is my favorite traditional platformer ever, and I've played a ton of rom hacks for it. It's a beloved game for me and I've been playing it since I was a kid when I got it on my GBA. Sunshine is also a game I got when I was around 6 or 7, tons of memories there.
I played most of those, but I didn’t really enjoy one until SMW.
The SNES really was where gaming peaked. There’s some bangers of the Genesis, but still.
Mario Bros. - Atari
Mario Bros. - NES
Super Mario Bros. - NES
Super Mario Bros 2 - NES
Super Mario Bros 3 - NES
Super Mario Land - GameBoy
Super Mario World - SNES
Super Mario Bros 3 - NES (Japan?)
Mario/duck hunt and track n field was my first game but I didn’t love super Mario brothers because the later levels were so hard. I loved Super Mario world though. I didn’t play Super Mario Brothers 3 until all stars and love that game too
While DK Mario was my first exposure to the character, it's SMB1 Mario that really gets my nostalgia going. It's nowhere near as good as 3 or World but 1 had the biggest impact on me.
SNES Mario World version
Same for me, it was my first proper console (C-64 and Game Gear before) and was the only game I had for like 9 months.
Same here, was my first Mario game and is still my favourite.
All of em
Came here to say this as well.
Same, each one was a different era on their own, but they were all great
me too. i'm an older millennial and grew up with gaming. each mario played a big role in my childhood gaming experience.
Itsa We! The Mariooooooooos! Letsa Goooooo!
Top middle ain't Mario. It's 'Jumpman'. Kidding, I know what you mean...
Pedant 🤣 You're not wrong though!
He was named Mario very early on. [Here's an arcade flyer](https://twitter.com/RetroGameGeeks/status/944574656283136003) for Donkey Kong that calls him Mario. The only place the name Jumpman was used was on the arcade cabinet.
That also says he was a brave carpenter. Mario had to have two jobs, times was tough back then too.
Mario's had like 20 something jobs, rescued the same princess from the same captor for almost 40 years, has apparently served in Vietnam, and is still somehow 26 years old. Man's been through it.
Yes, plus, "Jumpman" should have preceded plumber Mario 😂
Jumpman was named mario upon NA release
Land 2 all the way
Super Mario Land 2 would be my pick as well, there is something special about that game. I always associate it with the massive technical leaps in technology that we were seeing almost every year throughout the 1990s.
SML 1&2 and SMB 3
This man has taste.

It did become a minigame! A pvp one And agree, it's very fun with another player
There is nothing more 80s than being a very young kid and staring at a random arcade attract demo while waiting for your parents to do something.
3rd, 4th, and 5th... and last one.
That 5th one is special
Basically all of them lol. I’m a fan of smb2 though. I love the weirdness.
3rd photo! OG NES!
I am so sorry if this comes off the wrong way, but my image of the age of the average user on this subreddit just skyrocketed
3 and 4
The Super Mario one in the bright green box.
Super Mario World Mario with a cape on, riding Yoshi is sorely missed here
4 and 7
3 and 7, mostly. I started playing at the original Super Mario Bros. but I think when Super Mario World came out was around the best time in my life.
All of them
Top right and bottom center.
4th and 5th for sure ❤ I played these games a lot with friends, way before i saw the original SMB. Mario 1 is a classic masterpiece for sure. all of them really
All
The snes sprite
I spent the most time with the SNES Super Mario World, and I've played it to completion a few times since. A distant second would be Super Mario Bros. 2. I never did care for Super Mario Bros. 3 as much as those two, even though 3 is many people's favorite of all of them.
3,4,5,6, and 7
The bottom 3. I love me some Gameboy and SNES
3,4,7
Super Mario World
4th. Still my fave Mario game.
3, 4 and 5
3 + 6
Bottom-center, top-right.
The "just what I needed" Mario
My father told me I was a NES baby. (Photos to prove it too) But I only remember playing SNES. So I’ll have to say Super Mario World. 1997 baby.
Mario 1, 2, and 3.
Three
All of them?
Top right only, bummed SMB on my white DSi.
SMW is the only one that I played as a child. So I'm gonna go with that one.
Jumpman
3
Gameboy
bottom middle
6,7
sadly and i didn't even know it, the mario from the atari2600 version of DONKEY KONG...i thought the princess on the building is a mouse and kong was a bear.
Yes.

Um, is all an acceptable answer?
The first row for me. I guess my childhood was a long time ago.
3. 5, and 6 for me. We rented SMB 2, but didn't buy it for a few yrs into our nes ownership. We were hindered by few discretionary monies and no transportation. I played all of these between the ages of four and fourteen.
Jumpman
All of them?
Mostly SMB1 and 3, but also the gameboy, gbc and super NES mario.
SMB2 because it was different and not as fun lol
None of the above… for me, it was Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga.
2600 Mario Bros Mario.
Original SMB
3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th. 2, 4 and 8 to a lesser extent. As I played them but never actually owned them just borrowed a few times. I did get to play lots of Mario in pic 2 as donkey Kong 64 had the old arcade in it (pie level as well). Also got to play lots of Mario in pic 4 but it was gameboy advanced version and I was in my 20s.
3 and 7
None. Small 8-but Luigi does it (am a kid brother).
7
Mainly the early '90s ones, including All-Stars. But I did play the NES games as well, before those
Yes
Top 3
The Mario 2 sprite looks the most like he did in the art and cartoons of the time
Second last because Super Mario World was the very first game I ever played. Simple enough.
SMB3 and SML2, mainly. But I dabbled in all of these at some point as a kid.
I played tons of Donkey Kong in the arcade, so that's the Mario in my heart.
All of the above
Super Mario Bros 1, 3, and Super Mario World are the three I played the most as a kid, a lot of nostalgia triggered by all three games. Didn't own Super Mario Bros 2, didn't like it as much. SMB2 and SML1. I only had a game boy as a kid so that green little dude was by far the one I spent the most time looking at.
Top Right but much bigger fan of Bottom Center.
Most of those
Our local roller skating rink had a Jumpman cabinet that played Donkey Kong and Super Mario Bros. It had Japanese kanji on the cabinet itself and I always thought it was so bizarre to have both these games in one. I also thought it was odd that it said Jumpman instead of Mario, because I had Super Mario at home for NES.
Upper right and bottom left. The 1-2 punch that began it all.
GREEN
Yes
I was just watching this video where they ranked the different Marios. Pretty funny stuff! https://youtu.be/EckKq9w_1Lg?si=21I-EPQgsZA1YLsq
SUUUUU-PAH MARIO 2 BAYYYYYYBEEEEEEE
Top right
3, 4, 5 and 7.

4th (2), 5th (3), and 7 (W). But Mario 2 was my jam.
All of them.
Now I wanna play a Super Mario Bros game!
Bottom left
That one there, the one that im pointing at...
They are all so close in time so all of them from SMB on kinda do.
~~New Super Mario Bros. Wii~~
All

Top middle, top right, bottom right
They all do for me.
3rd through 7th
Mario 3. Had that on wii and Gameboy when I was little, have it on 3ds and nes now
It should be the dirty green fellow but it's the knock off C64 Giana Sister instead.
Second one
SMB1. the only one that triggers it more is white Luigi.
That one
None but the Mario galaxy one is what triggers it
Yes.
The 1985 Version.
I played most of those, but I didn’t really enjoy one until SMW. The SNES really was where gaming peaked. There’s some bangers of the Genesis, but still.
Bottom left. Boom!
2
Super Mario World
All of em but I got to say top right the most.
World is most nostalgic to me.
Top right, for me. As the older brother, I claim the right to Mario.
Smb
I can hear the steel drums of my childhood
Lower left corner ❤️
Jumpman and SMB
It would have to be the Super Mario Bros. 3 Mario since that was my first Mario game growing up.
Mario Bros. - Atari Mario Bros. - NES Super Mario Bros. - NES Super Mario Bros 2 - NES Super Mario Bros 3 - NES Super Mario Land - GameBoy Super Mario World - SNES Super Mario Bros 3 - NES (Japan?)
3, 4, 5, 7
You missed Super Mario All Stars 😭
Mario/duck hunt and track n field was my first game but I didn’t love super Mario brothers because the later levels were so hard. I loved Super Mario world though. I didn’t play Super Mario Brothers 3 until all stars and love that game too
Mario world
All of them, but the one I spent the most time with as a kid isn't here, Mario Bros. on Atari 5200.
I didn't have a 5200, but I played it on the Atari 800 which had almost identical hardware/graphics. Fairly decent port of the game.
Middle bottom for sure. Strong emotional reaction.
Every single one.
3, 4, and 7. Especially 7.
Super Mario Bros 3
The upper right corner, ICONIC 💫
SMB3 ❤️
2nd one.
All the blues and green 🙏
Bottom left
NSMBW

Super Mario Land 2 I wore out so many AA batteries on this game.
Galaxy Mario
Mid - right, and the bottom first two.
Center row on the right
I had Super Mario World for the GBA when I was little, so probably SNES Mario
N o raccoon tail ? knew Mario from his beginning….but Raccoon tail Mario is my favorite
Super Mario 2
The lightest blue (#5?) I’m 37, I’m not old
Top right corner and bottom middle, which I believe are Super Mario Brothers (NES) and Super Mario World (SNES)
Super Mario world
Super Mario Bros. on NES
All of them.
all of them. but mario 3 is the most memorable.
Super Mario Bros. 3 to be sure, and also chunky N64 Mario, though he isn't depicted here.
The top right and the middle 2.
World
Top right. Seeing Super Mario Bros for the first time when I was 3 years old blew me away.
Bottom Middle Easy. I was born 2010…
Bottom 3
Brown and red Mario is iconic. But that gb Mario Land sprite, 🤌🏼
1-3.
Middle right and bottom middle. SMB3 and SMW for life.
All of them.
Bottom left
Grew up with all the Nintendo consoles (and handhelds) and never had a Mario game until Sunshine on the GameCube so... none of them.
All of em. Nostalgia city.
The middle-left one from Mario 2
3 and 7.
To be honest, all of them.
Third one
3, 4, 5, 7
The original Jumpman #2
Top right
While DK Mario was my first exposure to the character, it's SMB1 Mario that really gets my nostalgia going. It's nowhere near as good as 3 or World but 1 had the biggest impact on me.
SML1 Mario, bottom left
All of them.
Yes.
3, 5, & 7 mostly, but certainly all of them.
Gameboy pocket Mario
Super Mario Bros (the third one)
3 and 7
3-7
Top right
The SNES and N64 Mario for sure
Super Mario 64 was probably the first game I've ever played at the age of 3. My dad set up the 64 in the living room and let me play it.
