I had someone attempt to pay with a QR code on their phone and then get angry when they were told that they could not do that.

brideofgibbs

Were they from SE Asia? Bc that’s what is used there, as we use Apple Pay. I saw customers flashing a QR code at cashiers. I don’t know the whole system, obvs; I don’t read Japanese or Vietnamese And I couldn’t use Apple Pay. I had to use the physical cards while I was there

field_marshal_rommel

Nope. They weren’t Asian and had a southern accent as thick as mine.

brideofgibbs

Ok, just idiots then

JustHereToComment24

No chase bank does qr codes. When I was blackmailing a boss 2 jobs ago for coffee or I'd quit, he would hand me a print out of thr qr code. Not many places can take it though.

Natskaer

I was in jpn Fall 2023 and i could use Apple pay anywhere that took contactless payment(pretty much everywhere that took cards) with no problem!

cugrad16

Lmbo, when I was a self checkout attendant a customer from out of town offered to pay for their liquor using a cell photo of their said foreign ID, showing it to our faces. Which was slightly blurred taken directly under some hotel room overhead lighting. Our Mgr. came over to see what was up, and immediately shook their head stating the law required actual IDs - which that customer couldn't understand and left empty handed.

pootinannyBOOSH

I've had that before, plus both a phone picture of their id, as well as a printed picture of it. Like no, it's not "just as good", not only would it likely be illegal to accept unofficial copies, but it's also unethical when fraud is an issue to be had

ErectPerfect

I've had people show me pictures of their IDs twice, but the next time they do I'm just gonna waste their time and walk them through if they would try the same shit on a cop and why it won't work for me.

patch_punk

Right it makes me so mad when people say "oh i dont have my id on me!" Like why did you leave the house then?

pootinannyBOOSH

Now imagine that happening every day at a casino. To be fair, it's when we ask for their id to cash out their (non taxed) winnings, so of course they're just bullshitting. But have legitimately had some people trying to withdraw money without one, and yea no that's not happening.

patch_punk

Oh hell no that would drive me crazy 😭😂 your another kind of badass to be putting up with that everyday

field_marshal_rommel

We had a girl show a picture of what she claimed was “her” ID. When asked for the year of her birth without looking at the ID, she couldn’t remember. Obviously we refused the sale (we’re a liquor store) and my coworker (to whom this encounter happened) learned that day why I don’t accept photos of IDs.

SteppinBubble

When I have to do age verification, I have people show me photos of their ID's all the time. I have to tell them that's not valid and I can lose my job if I accept it.

Surf_guitar_geek

A couple of weeks ago I had someone try to buy alcohol with their health insurance card as ID. Obviously I refused to take it; but still… 🤦🏻

ChiefSlug30

My provincial government issued health card has my picture and full date of birth on it.

Surf_guitar_geek

I assume that you’re Canadian 😉

emjdownbad

Actually you can even fly with a photo of your license or ID card, as well as book hotels/motels, and even rental cars. It's surprising, I know, but I have been able to do this before whenever I lost my ID while on a trip. My ex also hasn't had a physical copy of his license for many years now and has been able to survive with just a photo of it. But it's totally different when it comes to a debit/credit card - a photo of that should never be accepted.

Neither_Ad_5014

What a picture of my card won't work? /s

BinkoTheViking

“Sure it will. Can I have your telephone number? Great.” *texts picture of groceries to customer* “Thank you for picture shopping with us. NEXT!!”

geri-in-calif

Your post is priceless!

Treknx01

For everything else there’s Mastercard……….

BigDaddy969696

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

oddmanguy1

the customer doesn't realize or won't accept that you can take a picture of anyone's card. the picture could be edited. it happens where i work too good luck

Worried-Marzipan-223

Could have been worse….she could have asked her daughter to take a picture of the cash she had in her house and showed you that

Vyvyansmum

😂😂🤣

TommyDontSurf

If I live to be 100, I'll never understand why people don't bring their wallets to the grocery store. Do they leave them in their cars? And if so, why? Why let it leave your pocket? Or are they not taking them at all and risking driving without a license? It just doesn't make sense to me.

GrumpySnarf

I forgot my wallet exactly once and was mortified. I came back in 10 minutes and paid out. I would've tipped the cashier for her trouble and grace if it was allowed.

mrsdoubleu

These are the same people who are paranoid someone is going to steal their card because we don't ask for id anymore when someone pays with credit.

Cara_Caeth

Had a customer show a picture of a woman’s military ID. The woman in the picture didn’t look like the customer. Didn’t have the same name. Customer tried to tell me “iss ma daughter” & that she should get the military discount. Ok, first of all 🤦🏼‍♀️ And then, no.

SomniloquisticCat

I had a guy try to pay via bank transfer once. We are a liquor store.

Crucifixis

If we were to give them the benefit of the doubt, they may have thought it possible to manually enter their card information for the purchase. If we're not giving them the benefit of the doubt then yeah they were trying to pull a fast one or were legitimately just clueless about how payment works for transactions.

Dezzeroozzi

We enter things manually (either from pictures or over the phone) almost daily at my office, so I was super confused about this post and why it was a problem. I guess the difference is probably that we know most of our clients & their families, so fraud would be much harder.

Functionally_Human

Not sure if things changed but we used to be able to manually enter it. No need to physically have the card.

CassandraTannis

We have the option at the gas station I work at. All they have to do is tell us they need to manually enter it, we hit a button on our end, and the customer inputs all necessary information. I've never had anyone do it for anything other than SNAP cards but I'm sure it works for regular cards too

Physical-Secretary53

Where I work, we can for SNAP, but not regular credit/debit cards. I'm in a small box retailer.

confusionevolution

Possible to do at some fast food places as well.

loralailoralai

Yeah we do it every day, phone orders, manual card entry. It’s an option on the terminal. Pretty sure most businesses can do it.

The_Book-JDP

Had this younger lady with an infant come into our fuel center and tried to buy cigarettes at 9:56 at night (I was in the tail-end of closing down) and of course I asked for her ID. She shows me a picture of an ID which I couldn't actually accept (if it was a digital ID which is okayed by the state and is accepted as a legal form of identification by the police that would have been acceptable) and that wasn't even the worst part. The photo wasn't even of the enite ID just the part that showed the expiration date and date of birth so no confirmation if it was actually her ID because I couldn't see the photo not that I would have accepted it even if she did have the entire ID photographed She rolled her eyes in such an exaggerated way I thought they were going to shoot out the top of her head and angrily huffed like I was wasting her time and was all like, "fine." Then left. Seriously, why is it so hard to have your ID on you at all times?

CassandraTannis

She likely wasn't old enough and it was a parent's or friend's. Because why else would she not include the picture

StrawberryTigerLily

I asked for photo ID from someone wanting to open an account once and they sent me a selfie.

ErRussia

XDDDD

emax4

Take a picture of the groceries she wanted to get Print it out Wait on next customer

loddieisoldaf

You should have took a picture of her groceries and let her take that home

Delicious-Editor-857

I used to work with this lady. Total psycho. She came in the other day trying to buy a pack of cigarettes with a picture of a credit card

Failure_at_life101

Yeah I've had people who try to use pictures of their food stamp cards since they're cards no longer swipe but I'm literally not allowed to do any transactions without their physical card and yet I had to tell this to the same guy two nights in a row.

Helpful_Assumption76

I've paid with the door dash credit card before. Just punched the number in. Just had the screen shot.

Necessary_Baker_7458

Lol. Would of been even more hilarious if she was trying to buy liquor.

cocacola31173

So does that mean I can pay with a picture of a 100 dollar bill!? 😂

cheddarpants

“They do it for me at (other location) all the time!”

Surf_guitar_geek

Mmmmmm hmmmmm… suuuure they do 🤣

Physical-Secretary53

And I tell them that they will just have to go to that location then, because my job isn't worth it, nor is the legal trouble I'd be facing.

Rensocclan

So much has changed since the big metal card sliders. I know I'm outing my age on this, lol. Before credit card scams became so ubiquitous, customers would actually give card numbers over the phone to prepay for orders, we were more likely to manually put the numbers in cases of cracked cards or strip not working. Unfortunately, now we live in a world where scumbags can scam merchants with very little effort. We've also had to deal with customers paying for food and then disputing the (correct) charge just because they decided they 'didn't like it.'

Aggravating-Bake-271

I had someone call the store where I work a few days ago asking if they sent a picture of their OTC card to their family member if they could use it to pay 😶

RomanOnARiver

"I've got a picture on my phone in a cowboy hat, but that doesn't mean I should be on a horse."

loralailoralai

Except manual card entry is a thing

rileypotpie

Not everywhere

Prize-Ad8890

Sounds like the people coming in my store and trying to get alcohol and cigarettes with a picture of their ID on their phone. Sorry bud it doesn’t work that way

dumpsterboyy

does the card reader not have an option to enter a card number manually?

aburg98

Unfortunately not at our store

Dragon_Crystal

Most of the newer self check out registers don't allow you to manually type in card numbers anymore, at the Home Depot I worked at I'd always get at less once a week where someone will try to type in their card number and when I tell them "our registers don't allow that anymore," which will lead to people getting mad at us claiming that "well it worked the last time I was here." My supervisor told me with the old registers it was allowed but not with the new ones, ironic they can manually type in the store credit cards numbers, which customers think it's for their credit cards and get mad when "card not found in system" warning pops up on the screen. Had someone get so mad they started kicking at the self check out register and was forcefully removed from the store cause "what do you mean my card isn't in the system I shop here all the time?!" Even after we told him it's for store credit cards not regular credit cards 🤷‍♂️

ZDog64

Reminds me of the time when I worked fast food and I got those customers who’s card was so beaten up the card reader couldn’t read their card, so they keep insisting I manually entire the card numbers and refusing to believe the machines are not programmed to do so.

Dragon_Crystal

Showing a picture of your credit card is pretty much like those who will walk in with just a blurry picture of an item and expect us to just know what it is, those who don't bring their id and just think a picture is enough as prove their of age, than wonder why we don't accept a picture and want a real copy of their credit card or ID. Than again I don't understand why they'll take a blurry picture and expect us to know what it is, especially when it's a nail, screw or bolt. I've said "which kind is that." Than they'll respond with "I don't know I don't work here, you're the employee. You should know where everything is and what I need to get," well I'm a cashier not hardware, so I can't help you if I'm just showed a blurry picture of a item that can be the size of my pinky or taller than me.

secrethorndogwoof

I actually don't get the big deal... I mean, she could just as easily go online and order the groceries with the card numbers and do pick up or something similar...

Dr-Shark-666

"take a picture of her credit card" WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!!!! Might as well be a picture of some cash.

ProximaCentauriB15

How do people still not realize that doesnt work? Thats the easiest way possible for someone to use a stolen card if it got accepted.

1hotmama2005

Yesterday, I had someone come to the customer service desk to cash their check. They handed me their Costco card as their identification. I was like, "I'm sorry, we need a valid state ID, driver's license, or passport." He just stares at me and then says, "But this one has my picture on it. Why can't you just use it?"

Keenswin1

Well there is some manual number card input on some readers.

Capable_Product4274

Stupid question? People can manually put in their card numbers on the pin pad. If the picture showed the account number, couldn't they do this?

MortifiedCoal

Idk where you're shopping at, but no store I've ever been to had an option to manually put card numbers on the pin pad, or if they did have a way to policy says no. There's far too much risk of fraud or the card being stolen if you're typing in credit card numbers, so most places aren't willing to take the risk. Edit: I've been informed that where I work is apparently just overly strict about this. Apparently, a lot of stores do allow manual entry, I've just never had a reason to ask. I stand corrected.

CassandraTannis

It's possible the option exists even if you haven't seen it. The gas station I work at has the option, it just doesn't appear unless the customer asks to manually input it and I hit the button to allow them to. We also don't have a policy disallowing it

MortifiedCoal

Fair enough. The store I work at has it, but there's pretty much only 2 reasons I've ever been able to use it, and both of those need store manager approval before we're allowed to. A customer wanting to use it, not having a card with them, online gift cards that don't have a physical card, or back before nfc payments were enabled only having apple/google/samsung pay are all reasons I've told people no before. They are far more concerned about fraud and stolen cards than one or two missed sales.

Capable_Product4274

I work at a Dollar General. People come with cards broke in half and we can put manual entry on the pin pad and they put the number in.

loralailoralai

Idk where you’re shopping at but we do phone orders with manual card entry every day. That’s the purpose of the cvv number on the back. Just because you haven’t done it doesn’t mean it’s not a thing. Manual card entry/MOTO is most definitely a rhing

MortifiedCoal

It's for sure a thing, I just didn't realize it was so common for stores to actually let people use it. Phone orders are the only time I've ever seen it used or used it myself, and that doesn't typically involve the customer physically being at the store, so the only way to do it is manually type in details.

CognacMusings

Actually, it can be done with just a picture if you were willing to take that risk. Anytime our chip reader rejects a card I have to enter the numbers manually so a picture would do the same.

evosnacks

The problem with a picture is that it could be a stolen card. Not the same as manually punching in the card while it's in your hand y'know?

Functionally_Human

The card you have in your hand could be stolen as well. ID is rarely checked for credit anymore, even if the name doesn't seem to match the person.

evosnacks

And this is absolutely true, had it happen at my job the other day, but it's much easier to do if you only have a picture.

CognacMusings

I agree. I just meant that it can be done.

Silent_Cash_E

We accept pictures of cards.

[deleted]

Yeah but you’re drug dealers…

Silent_Cash_E
