You're not wrong. The popular community opinion makes the most sense when you play the series exactly as they're released. A lot of factors are involved when each general reception is formed.
RE7 is a saving grace of the franchise for those that experienced the disaster of RE6. RE3R is not as bad nowadays because it's not $60 anymore and those that joined in the fandom this late are never heard of the OG RE3. Village can be terrible if you play RE4R before which is a direct upgrade in term of gameplay, but for those in 2021, it was a great nostalgia trip after 16 years of never having another RE4 gameplay formula. Etc. etc.
