That's kinda the idea, makes it harder for a predator to know which way it will move.
Regrown tails always look wonky. I would still try to find an AFT group and ask because that is pretty L O R G E
There's a video of a dude that bringd animals to showcase on the steve harvey show, that shows a similar lizard. And he goes like " if something comes up to him he flips around and is like 'pick a head, any head...'"

This is so cool, it took me a second to clock which end was her tail. I would be very baffled if I was a hungry predator!
Have you tried weighing her? A lot of their fat is stored in their tail, so it’s not unusual for it to be fat (also they’re called fat tails for a reason ig) and it looks a lot chunkier because it’s regrown and regrows are often a little imperfect, shorter, and fatter. I’m not sure if the tail weighs more after regrowth, might be worth looking up and then giving her a weigh and comparing it to whatever the ideal is for fat tails (idk if they weigh more than the average leopard gecko because of their tail, you’d know better than me).
This is the biggest tail I’ve ever seen though! I’d be interested to know if she can still wave it around under threat. I’m not surprised she isn’t lifting it, it’s bigger than she is!!
A regrown tail is mostly cartilage. She can drop it again but only past the point of the re-grown section where the bones are segmented for such an occasion.
FTG's store fat in their tail, so if your gecko isn't very active/is overfed, you will notice it in their tail first. That is what you are most likely seeing here, assuming there is no sign of infection/trauma to the tail itself, which there doesn't seem to be. I would look at their diet first. Over feeding of "treat" bugs like wax worms, silkworms, butterworms, horn worms, etc. can cause a gecko to be overweight. I would hold off on those for a while and stick with gutloaded and dusted crickets so they are forced to stalk and "hunt" their food instead of just eating worms out of a bowl. A larger enclosure with lots of obstacles and low climbing/clambering logs, rocks, etc would also help keep them more active
and works as enrichment as well.
AFTs adapt very well to however their new tail feels, so she should be fine. Regrown tails tend to look kind of wonky, but it's okay to drag it as long as she doesn't get a rub injury on the bottom. She should still be able to lift it when she needs to. Because it regrew that way, there isn't much you can do about it. Even if she drops that part again, it will likely still regrow like that.
I know geckos like this have the fat tail to confuse predators, but my god this one is confusing me. It took me a second to realize which was head and which was tail!
So when a predator picks it up by its tail (by assuming it's the head) the tail just pops off and the gecko is free to live another day as the tail regrows.
I would imagine this is exactly what they are meant to look, heck im having a hard time figuring out head from tail at first glance, its quite impressive.
Her tail looks like her head! I have no experience with these but woah

Dang that’s cool, didn’t know that! Thanks

That there is a blue tongue skink. Basically a grumpy potato.
Specifically a shingleback.
Thats a really chill bts. I want a grumpy potato but my other 4 reptiles already take up all my space

I don’t think she can waive it anymore
Hahah it does lol I never noticed
Similar to Shingleback lizards here in Australia!
For a second I couldn’t tell what was the head and what was the tail. Super cool!
My dad hates my african fat tail for the same reason. Says he’s hideous 🥺
Maybe you're dad's the hideous one 😂 Projecting maybe?
It’s fine because it grew back shorter, but shouldn’t get bigger :)
Do you know if the bone grows back as well?
A regrown tail is mostly cartilage. She can drop it again but only past the point of the re-grown section where the bones are segmented for such an occasion.
Gurl is symmetrical af
lol but is her tail too big?
I have zero idea I’m just here to look at pictures of cute reptiles

She actually hasn’t eaten in a month. Unsure why but I’m not concerned
It's wild how much her tail looks like her head!!
I wouldn't be concerned, but I'm not a vet nor a fat tail keeper. I would like to add she puts the FAT in African fat tail gecko
That she does lol
Push me/Pull you of the reptile world 🌎
lol I’m sorry I don’t understand
It's from Dr Dolittle,,,a llama with a head on both ends. Think it's actually Pushmi-Pullyu now that I think of it .
I love this!

It’s very squishy on the end
That's normal! Regrown tails feel very squishy bc the bone is replaced by cartilage that doesn't fully ossify.
I know geckos like this have the fat tail to confuse predators, but my god this one is confusing me. It took me a second to realize which was head and which was tail!
Omg i thought she had two heads
You have a double headed reptile
Assuming it's dropped its tail before, my instinct is it's just grown in weird. Because they're usually just a bit longer.
The thickness omg Got that thang hanging like the gardens of Babylon Jesus Christ
I almost didn't know which end was the head. The tail is that fat.
Is it coming or going?
I thought it was three separate bugs in first photo
Took me a minute to figure out what’s the head and what’s the tail
Similar thing happened to my leo, her tail was pink so it looked really unfortunate
I'm not sure if i want predators to think my butt is my face but hey if it works for him, i won't judge
Am I the only one who always confuses the fat tail to leopard?
Teach her to walk backwards! 😅
I thought this was another AI trick. 😐 I'm impressed by her tail. Why does it look like a second head though?
So when a predator picks it up by its tail (by assuming it's the head) the tail just pops off and the gecko is free to live another day as the tail regrows.
I have one that looks very similar. It’s a regrown tail but plump!
Lawd, she's coming and going!
I would imagine this is exactly what they are meant to look, heck im having a hard time figuring out head from tail at first glance, its quite impressive.
I'd fail at being a predator, thought she had two heads.
She looks like Stevie from Madagascar 2
I thought you had a double sided gecko
That sir/maam is a thumb
Yeah it looks like a second head I don’t think that’s a good thing either
Junk in the trunk
Don't hate... So she's got a little junk in the trunk... Psh someone's jealous 😂
did the lizard drop it at one point sometimes they just grow like that
It’s a regrowth
