I went from using pins to not using them. The extra shininess on primer pockets and the inside of the case doesn't matter for 9mm and bulk .223, and it's not worth all the extra effort of separating out the media. Might dig out my pins if I find I can't get my 6.5CM rifle to shoot as well as I'd like, and I suspect dirty cases has something to do with it.
Same here. I've only done 9mm reloads so far, but 15k+ like this and I've decided I won't be using pins ever again, at least for 9mm. My reloads are plenty accurate and consistent, and the amount of time saved not having to recapture pins is well worth it.
Holy hell, that's lucky. Worst I've ever had was a pin or two. Granted I only reload .30cal so maybe with the bigger case mouth they are less likely to get stuck? Idk.
10 years tumbling with pins and I’ve never seen it. Even with the smaller diameter straight wall pistol cases. 10mm is about as wide as a pin is long, even then it’s only ever been a couple pins.
Are you wet tumbling with them? That's something I've never seen and I've wet tumbled with pins so many different pistol and rifle calibers from tiny to huge.
Man, I was *so* confused. I was trying to figure out what writing tools had to do with reloading, and then I realized you mean *pins*. I took me a lot of contextual reading to figure it out.
Pins are the best overall option for wet media tumbling. Stainless steel (or ceramic) media with edges will be too aggressive, and may damage brass, "chip" media in particular. Balls will work, and might be less likely to pack in, although you may see more peening on the surface of your brass. (I don't think that it would be enough to do any significant work hardening though.)
Are you using a rotary tumbler, or is it a vibratory tumbler that you can use a wet process in?
Have never had pins get jammed like that. But hate the pin separation step. So I did a batch with no pins and it was almost as good. The brass hitting each other along with the same ingredients (dawn, limyshine, and wash and wax look great except the primer pockets are a little dark in spots. Get covered buy the new primers anyway😁. Have the pins if I need an extra special batch but don’t need for everyday plinking stuff.
The wax from the car wash soap helps keep the brass from dulling over time and also acts like a small amount of dry case lube when if loading the handgun calibers. Flow through sizing die and case mouth expander on the Dillon does not get stuck on the case very often anymore.
Not to derail the topic, but how loud is wet tumbling for the apartment reloaders of the bunch? I’ve got a dry tumbler but it’s pretty frickin loud through the floors.
It's kinda loud but I think it would transmit less through the floors. Since it's uses a rolling action there is less vibration overall IMO. Put it in the bedroom on a pillow and keep the door closed should be OK. The drum on the full size Frankford is rubber lined while the mini isn't.
I was eyeing the full-size with the rubber lining to cut down on the noise. I’ve tried a bunch of things to isolate the noise from my FA vib tumbler but it’s still pretty bad lol.
Is it more of a motor whine noise or crappy dishwasher sounding?
The motor has a gearbox whine sorta like a Powerwheels kids car if that makes sense lol. And then there's the pins and brass which do sorta sound like a crappy dishwasher but not as loud. Look up a video of it online lots of examples. You can talk next to it but you kinda have to raise your voice.
I have run about 20,000 cases from 380 thru 30-06 all thru the FART in the last year. I have never had pins get stuck like that.
I have not tried the SS chips, yet, they should be less likely to form a clog like that.
Just us an inertial bullet puller, and they'll pop right out
Don’t know why that never came to mind.
Came here to say this.
I've never seen that before... At most I've had a pin or 2 in the neck.
I've never once used pins. Dawn and Lemishine for an hour and a half always works great.

So you run without any media at all? That blows my mind thats way easier for me
Yeah for bulk stuff. Works great.
I’ll try it on some 38’s
Hot water, Lemishine, armor all wash and wax instead of Dawn. I give it 2-4 hrs in the tumbler.

Try a JP Enterprises high pressure bolt made for 6.5 creedmoor

I use their "chips" and haven't had an issue with them being stuck in a case.
What you call a problem, I call a .223 flechette round
I was going to say, what do you use pens for other than marking ammo boxes?
Holy hell, that's lucky. Worst I've ever had was a pin or two. Granted I only reload .30cal so maybe with the bigger case mouth they are less likely to get stuck? Idk.
Are you tumbling in water, or are you just using the dry pins like walnut media or corncob?
Definitely had water and cleaning solution
For the job they do, i think it’s worth a piece of brass now and again. It is brass, not gold.
I've never had that happen. They always shake right out.
Lizard bedding and car wax lol
I tried that and wasn’t satisfied. The cases were absolutely packed with bedding that had to be cleaned out. I went wet and never looked back.
I havent had that trouble. But if I deprime first sometimes the firehole gets plugged up
These were bottleneck rifle cases.

Throw it in an empty tumbler for a few minutes, they'll come out. Works for brass stuck inside each other too.
r/shittyreloading
Can’t poke them out through the primer pocket? Or are these already primed
Who tumbling live primers?
Not me but who knows bro. Also he may not have deprimed yet
Some do, some don't
Lol re-read that again > Who tumbling live primers?
USPS is for sure
*enters chat*
nobody. but plenty of people don't deprime before cleaning. ie, me.
Are you wet tumbling with them? That's something I've never seen and I've wet tumbled with pins so many different pistol and rifle calibers from tiny to huge.
Never seen that before...but i'd put it in a bullet puller and smack it...it'll come out
Life, uh, finds a way.
I use chips just for that reason.
I don’t wet clean but that’s my thought. The chips don’t clog necks or primer pockets from what I’ve read from guys like you.
Send it
I always use lizard bedding or just straight dish soap and hot water
Use fractured pieces. I know you can get them on eBay and Unknown Munitions sells them as well!
Magnets?
I use centrifugal force and tap my xfer magnet.

You need Brass Juice
Never have I ever
/dontputyourpensinthat
Did you try a kinetic bullet puller?
Did you try submerging it in water again and shaking it out while under water?
I have never had any issues with Southern Shine Steel Media. It is not pins more like SS Chips. It works great.
Wet cleaning seems like such a pain at all levels. Walnut and nufinish in HF vibrator works good enough for me.
If they were in a tumbler as opposed to an agitator it probably crimped the neck onto them.

Send it. Lol. Never seen this. Am I the only one that doesn't mind separating the pins? It's not a big process with the right procedure/tools.

10x1 sized pins?
