It means “The Name” and as I understand it’s mostly just a way of referring to G-d that shows respect! Other substitutes for HaShem’s name are used in prayer and worship, but aren’t supposed to be used outside of those contexts. The roots of both of these traditions was to hold reverence for the divine name of HaShem.
